The Tailoring Room

I bought a vintage lace dress to wear to an upcoming wedding that was just all over too big but I figured I could easily have tailored to fit. This place was recommended to me by the vintage store owner, and since I wasn’t going to take it to just any tailor I was prepared to spend around $ 30 – 50 for an alteration. I went here, got a fitting in front of a mirror until it looked good, with no mention of prices until the very end. Granted, I didn’t ask ahead, and prices for a whole dress are not listed on the website. When she told me the price I reeled. I was worried I got ripped off – $ 75 to take in the sides, put darts in the back, and bring up the hem. But it turned out looking really good and I think it was worth it to get it done just right. Just be prepared for a hefty price tag.

I continue to love the Tailoring Room. I moved to Chicago and I still return twice a year with my vintage dresses so that Andrea can make them perfect. These guys are so nice and so good at what they do, and they have an amazing eye for the proportions of garments. I trust them implicitly with all of my clothing.

These guys are THE BEST. I trust them with anything and everything. I am incredibly particular about alteration work and you can look no farther… you have found your tailor.

this place is great for simple jobs — fixing straps, hemming pants, installing zippers in simple garments. However with each subsequent visit I noticed their work getting sloppier. They dont mark or pin each leg so the hem can be a bit uneven. The fitting process is rushed and the woman seems annoyed if you make to many adjustments. Also adding hook and eye closures are impossible for them. Im not sure I’d trust them with more complicated jobs or my expensive clothing.
If your willing to take a gamble and have cheap items that need alterations this place is good because of the low prices.

I have finally found a good tailor in New York. And that’s an understatement. They’re magic. I have had many pieces, that I would otherwise be afraid to alter, done with The Tailoring Room and they’ve done an incredible job every time. They’re very knowledgable and kind, too. Highly recommended.

This is probably the best place for alterations within LES. I have been a repeating customer for the Tailoring Room due to the quality and the price for alterations. I have had multiple pairs of slacks and chinos that have been tailored by The Tailoring Room and the fitment was great. However, the only problem that I have with The Tailoring Room is the turnaround time is quite long — the lead time is roughly one week.

This place made two pretty amateur /​sloppy mistakes that signal they don’t know what they’re doing. I can’t recommend this place for even simple jobs.
My story: I brought in two pairs of pants. The first was a pair of chinos that I wanted tapered. The alteration was very visible from the outside and there was an obvious break where they began the tapering. They admitted and apologized that it was sloppy and adjusted free of charge, but it was pretty shocking to see the level of work. The other was a pair of jeans — they took in the waist too much, and when I wanted it let out, they had cut too much fabric to be able to.
Unfortunately I had to give away both pairs of pants.

Amazing! i go here for anything from jeans to suit jackets. They are very knowledgeable about garment construction, even difficult jobs like suit jackets and pants tapering.

I went to the Tailoring Room twice. The first time I brought two pairs of pants to hemmed. They did a good job within a reasonable amount of time, for a fair price. I brought two or three more pairs of pants in to get hemmed. They never called to let me know they were ready (even though they said they would). Two pairs of the pants had work that was just terrible. On one pair the work was done poorly and the other pair had only one leg hemmed, the other not enough. I didn’t realize until I got home. Decided not to trek all the way back to have them fix it. Will not return. Sorry but pants hemming is a very straight-​forward alteration. How did you mess up that one?

This is where the phrase «you get what you pay for» really applies. More expensive than an inferior tailor but your clothes will fit perfectly. And they are honest. I brought in a few slacks from when I was heavier; they told me that workmanship and money wise it would be better to buy new ones. This was my first time there but already planning a return…

I am in love with how my boyfriend’s tux came out, he has currently brought two other suits and three pairs of pants to tailor for him and we’ve only known about this place for only two weeks. They know how to cater to your body type, I haven’t brought anything here to tailor yet but when I do need some tailoring, I’m definitely coming here. It’s a family-​owned business and they are all so sweet and nice !

Everyone else’s reviews are spot on. I get almost everything altered because I am hard to fit, and Andrea is amazing to work with. I buy a lot of vintage that I then bring to her to fit, and you can’t tell her work apart from the original construction. I bring her brand new with tags on, and she helps me try it on and pin it 19 ways before advising me whether or not the fix will be worth what she’ll have to charge me. («For this… I’d have to charge you $ 75, because of the lining… and it might still pucker. So, maybe not worth it to keep if you can return?») She is unfailingly honest even when it means she loses out on the job, which is why I trust her so implicitly. That, and she hasn’t messed up a single one of the, oh, 25 things I’ve brought her over the last 2 years.
Fair warning: They are not the lowest-​cost provider. As a ballpark, I’ve paid anything from $ 15 to take in the shoulders on a dress and a tricky pants hem to $ 75 to hem a full skirt all the way around and take in the bust. That said, I don’t part with my money easily at all, and I keep going back to Andrea because, as I said above, I trust her to be honest with me about what it will look like at the end, and then to execute flawlessly upon her promise. She hasn’t let me down once yet.

This place is amazeballs.
Dropped off 5 pairs of pants for alterations (10 dollars each), 1 pair that I somehow destroyed zipper (15 dollars), 3 sweaters I adore that I had mysteriously bore holes into (12 dollars each for repair), and a few dresses that needed straps redone (15 each) and one that I needed some serious sparkle things sewn onto (23 dollars).
All of my reckless clothes wearing and life living over the last year amounted to only 150 in alterations!!! I’ve come here for pants to be hemmed and they do quite a high quality job and fit you professionally (unlike some of the dry cleaners who draw a random mark here and there and hope for the best).
I’ve always found workers to be nice and professional, they’re definitely honest if they don’t think that something is workable, but that’s a good thing.
Turnaround is a little long (2 weeks currently) because they’re popular but hey, good things come to those who wait!

I’ve been going to them for the past 2 years. Very efficient and reasonable pricing. Also willing to provide insight/​advice.
Love the fact that they are honest in their opinions. If its not worth $ 120 to adjust the shoulders of your suit .25 inches, they suggest not doing it.

I brought in two fine cashmere wool overcoats that I’d bought years before at a Barney’s warehouse sale. They were simply too large. But the guys Herr ate really skilled pros. They were able to take the coats on and they fit perfectly now.
In addition, I also brought them some old suits of mine which were simply too big to begin with, but more especially so since I’d lost quite a bit of weight. The tailor was very honest with me and explained that it would cost more to make them fit me than to just buy new suits. And even then, they wouldn’t fit as nicely because what I was asking for was a reconstruction, not merely an alteration of the suit. Turning away business is an indicator that these guys aren’t trying to scam you. Very glad I did end up buying new suits. I use these guys now for all my major alterations.

The best tailor in NYC. If an item can be successfully altered, Franklin can do it. In the past, I’ve had shirts taken in by lesser tailors, and it’s been a complete waste of money.
I’ve gotten a lot of items altered here – suits, button down shirts, pants – and I’ve always been happy with the outcome. Pay close attention when he is pinning your item and tell him then if you want it tighter, looser, shorter, etc. How he pins it is how it will turn out.

nightmare tailoring job.
I headed to this place with 5 pants, 1 jacket, and 2 shirt. The owner was friendly while his wife is NOT.
I tried and dropped my cloths off. After three wk of waiting finally I got a call that they are ready. I went there to pick up my stuffs. Once I tried them, to my surprise, none of the garments, except the shirt, were properly altered/​tailored. The owner apologized and asked for redoing. I said fine. Two wks after, it was the same story .They altered the pants n jackets too short this times… make long story short, after three trips and burning $ 180 finally I got my stuffs. 2 Shirts are OK. but 4 new pants are NOT wearable. They destroyed the fabric. I donated them. Do not waste your time, cloths n money there. They do not know what they are doing. STAY AWAY

After reading the stellar reviews, I chose this place to get my J. Crew bridesmaid dress tailored. The woman in the front was incredibly nice, generous with advice, and knew what she was doing. It took only a few minutes for her to see what alterations were necessary. I got a ticket to pick up my dress 1.5 weeks later.
Even though I lost my ticket when I came to pick up my dress, I got my dress with no problems. My dress fit perfectly. There were a few washable marks on the dress (that were there before) and the sweet lady took extra time to clean it (no charge). I got the impression that she truly cared that the dress would be all set for the wedding. I would definitely come again if I needed any alterations on anything else.

I went to the tailoring room with a dress I want to wear for my wedding that has a few issues (too big, has place-​holding thread that was erroneously left on the garment and needs the top reworked a bit, perhaps having a bra built in).
Their website and reviews on here say they do «dress transformations,» which is what I want so I went down to the LES with my dress.
I was greeted by an adorable dog, then a woman. I don’t know if it was because it was a Friday afternoon or because it’s a wedding dress, but she was not interested in helping me at all. She didn’t have me try on the dress or anything. She merely shook her head and asked me why I couldn’t just return the dress.
After reading all the reviews on here, I had thought that this would be able to help me, but unfortunately, they didn’t even want to try and that’s what’s truly disappointing.
