55 Express Tailor Repair

This place is amazing. Shout out to Rafael. Dropped off several suits and they’ve always turned out great. I’ve even had them fix alterations that other tailors have done. They are quick, do the job right and are decently priced. So thankful I found this place. Would recommend anyone to go.

Rafael is the man — skilled, fast, and good-​humored. I’ve dropped off five pairs of pants (10 total pants) with him for various fixes – hems, cuff-​removals, drawing in the waist, drawing out – he’s done a great job with each and charges a fair price. Today I left pants with him for hemming and he was done within 10 minutes. 10 minutes! I expected to return another day but he said it’d be 10 minutes! So I sauntered along Clinton St, grabbed a bagel (paid for it too) and after chewing it for a few minutes the pants were done!

I have taken many items here to be tailored and everything has turned out great. I have had suit jackets, pea coats and pants altered and they now all fit my quite well. I will definitely go back for anything else I need tailored and have recommended to my friends. If you need something tailored go here but beware the shop is closed at the end of this month due to vacation.

Thanks to Rafael, I was able get my formal gown tailored in time for my cruise!!! I received my dress and shoes extremely late, which was why I was looking for a quick, efficient tailor. I had only 1 DAY to get my dress tailored before my flight. So, although Rafael had a doctor’s appointment on the ONLY day I could get my dress tailored, he reassured me that if I dropped it off before his appointment at 1, that he could have it ready by the end of the day. So, I dropped the dress off at 11:30 AM, and he had it ready by the time I got off work at 5:30/6. The dress was perfect. The customer service was fantastic. The price was very reasonable. And I will HAPPILY, without any hesitation, refer my friends to his shop.
ALSO — I went in the day before thinking that I could get the dress tailored WITHOUT the EXACT shoes I intended to wear the dress with, since they hadn’t arrived yet, and Rafael WARNED me against doing so because of a previous experience with a customer, where she had insisted on getting her dress tailored, WITHOUT the shoes, AGAINST his warnings, and became unhappy with the finished product. But, in my opinion, that is her own fault because Rafael was not shy when he told me how bad of an idea that was. He eventually persuaded me to wait to get the dress tailored by promising that he could start and finish the dress the next day.
SO, in my opinion, that shows that Rafael actually cares about his customers. He could’ve easily cut the dress, without the shoes, without warning me, and said, «well, that’s what you wanted so too bad,» BUT he didn’t.
He also did a great job tailoring my dress pants, which he said he could have done in 10 minutes if I wanted to wait, but I was in a rush so I picked them up the next day with my dress.
So in conclusion, I highly recommend 55 Express Tailor Repair.

I got their information from a guy who worked at proper cloth. Best tailor i’ve been to in the city and great prices. He makes everything look like an original. Highly recommend.

Thank you, Rafael, at 55 Express for the excellent job you did with repairing the inner lining of my boyfriend’s top coat. The lining was torn and Rafael found similar material to patch the three spots. Best of all, he only charged $ 35 whereas other places I had also considered were more expensive. Also incredible was that the job only took one day! I would highly recommend 55 Express.

I have taken both a bridesmaids dress and also a designer jumpsuit to Rafael and he has done an incredible job. The jumpsuit in particular was an extremely complicated job and other tailors that I took it to said they were unable to make the adjustments. Not only did Rafael do the job flawlessly but he did it in 3 days! I took it to him on a Monday evening and he got it back to me on Thursday — ahead of the day I needed it! I won’t go anywhere else for my tailoring — great quality and great service.

Raphael fixed my velvet jacket in one hour! I didn’t think it could be fixed!!!

Have been coming here for years since they do an excellent job. I have brought numerous items in from easy pants hems to complicated dresses and have always been satisfied.
They were first recommended to my parents by a boutique in the neighborhood and my folks now drive into manhattan to get most of their tailoring done here!

Whenever I go in, I always make sure that I drop it off with Rafael. The first time I worked with them, I dropped off 7 items, including a pair of lined leather shorts which may have been the most complicated piece.
When I walked in the first time, it was already past 7 and Rafael as well as another associate stayed and fitted me. When Rafael was fitting me, I could see that he must be good with what he does. Rafael fitted me very quickly and it was amazing how fast he was going. I’ve worked as a freelance designer myself and fitted my models. After seeing how Rafael does his fitting I feel like I don’t know how to fit at all!
The alteration of all 7 pieces was done in a week. The work was beautiful. I spent around 250 for my alteration, which is not cheap but reasonable because of the complexity of the work. My clothes look like nothing was done when they are given back to me on hangers and folded down, but when I tried them on they fit exactly how I like them to fit!
I was also really happy about my lined leather shorts. The lining was stitched down and it was not easy to alter this piece. Also there’s no way to redo what’s done on leather, you know. The shorts fit perfectly on me and they still look brand new.
I haven’t worked with other associates without speaking to Rafael first. Also I’d suggest giving yourself some extra time when you make an agreement on the promise date. I have worked with a few different tailor shops and those promise dates can get tricky especially with a shop without a big team. Things can happen when someone can’t make it to work in a small shop like this. One of their guys stayed in the hospital, and I encountered no problem cause I gave myself extra time before I really needed my clothes back.
So far my experiences are great, and I will continue working with them in the future!

I love this place! He’s done numerous alterations for me from bridesmaids gowns to pant hems. He’s always done an exceptional job and super quickly, even next day on multiple items. Since it’s a mom and pop family owned business, he usually stays late and has even stayed open later for me if I’m running past closing time.
He’ll remember your face and always greet you with a smile, which is always an added plus to already 5 star service!

Recently got a lot of work done on my suits by Rafael. They are very customer focused here and upfront. I had a very good experience working with them, the suits came out great and their prices are reasonable. I also love that you can get something hemmed here within a few minutes while you grab some dumplings at prosperity a few doors down.

Rafael is the man. I brought in an alteration on a complex jump suit. He made it fit my figure, created pockets, and helped take in an intricate, interlaced, star
multi-​strap design on the back. There was one tiny fabric bulge under my arm that I noticed and he fixed it right on the spot. He and his team and artisans. Super glad to have him in the hood. He’s now my tailor for life.

Went back today to pick up. The first thing the owner says to me is «Thank you for your review!» In the most sarcastic manner possible. That’s fine, I didn’t want to cause a scene.
He then tried to explain to me what happened, which I would appreciate if it was truthful. First, he said that the dress was ready 2 weeks ago. But why did he say that the dress wasn’t ready when I called last week (and left that review?) when confronted, he didn’t have an answer.
Finally, he admitted he was confused and shouted me out of the shop. He also said he was going to reply to my review. That’s fine. I’m going to upgrade this review to 2 stars, because he didn’t end up charging for the dress. I would definitely be more appreciative if he was not belligerent about it, but I’ll take what I can get.
Again, when things go right, 55 Express is a little pricey but the work is fine. When things go wrong, prepare to be sneered at.

Pretty sloppy for the ridiculous amount I paid.
My NEW dress was complicated with sequins and I went to 55 Express due to the rave reviews on Unilocal.Not complaining about the sequins since that is difficult (fyi also not the best job fixing that as sequins are falling off as I walk around) but the bottom part of my dress wasn’t taken with care.
The way they cut the mesh part of my dress was uneven, they left small but noticeable holes and lose threads everywhere. Had to grab a pair of scissors and cut off the threads myself. Yup, extremely dissatisfied.

I received the blazer back from the cleaners and the stains were removed. However, the owner was visibly upset that I wrote a review. You can’t get upset because Im writing off a review based on my experience with the establishment. However, I can say that I am happy that the stain was out because this was for a wedding so I’m highly satisfied and happy to get this process over with.

I needed a couture dress altered for an event. It had a tulle train and they took more than meticulous care in removing the tulle before doing alterations. Can’t imagine how much work that was and my dress was ready on time and perfect!
Fast, reasonable and friendly!

I have updated my review after an additional 24 visits to Raphael’s shop. As you can tell I am already a fan and whenever I find items at a discount which aren’t my size I know Raphael will always come to my rescue and he hasn’t failed me once!
He is a true artisan, and deals with his customers calmly which helps when you are not sure what to do with a certain piece of clothing.
I have now recommended several friends to 55 Express tailors.
He now has a new location which is roomier.

Master Tailor is what I call him when I walk into the store. He is my go to for anything related to pants. He’s hemmed, tightened and fix other tailor’s work before. I toggle between him and Stanton but almost exclusively go to 55 Express because they have always produced quality work. I’m a stickler and never hold back in criticism. He has yet to fail to produce. Keep up the great work Master Tailor.
I’m reluctantly writing this post because I’m afraid he’ll get too popular and his turn around time will suffer.
