The R Train

Took the R train today, no problems Saturday noontime going into Manhattan.
No re-​routing this weekend, even on the way back the wait wasn’t too long, maybe 15 minutes wait at 34^th St.
The aroma in the subway on this freezing cold day was Homeless Bouquet, a pungent combination of baby powder, cheap whiskey, human excreta and several flavors of car air freshener.

Train is late every day now and when you get on it constantly delays and moves at the speed of an ant. The trains are always packed too and constant line switches happen where it goes on the F line and most of the time the crew won’t even tell you what line it’s going on now or if it will go back to the R line. God help you if you need to commute to one of the green line express trains at 59^th st street because those are garbage every day at rush hour too. This is becoming the worst train of all and the MTA has no interest reviewing it for years. Unions are beautiful folks aren’t they, who needs efficiency?

This is 1 «R“ancid, «R“idiculous, «R“aped, «R“etarded, «R“edundent, «R“avaged, «R“amshackled, «R“attlebrained, «R“earing, «R“ackety, «R“ecalcitrant…fcuking train.
Never follows schedule. Weekends, you will wait until your face turns «R“ed.
This train «R“represents all things negative. Nothing good can come from it.

It’s the subway. If you are not from NYC, maybe you do not understand.
I am giving three stars since I get on at the first stop and get a seat.
The R is basically safe. I only ride in the morning and not in Crooklyn. At night, good luck.
For out of towners, no eye contact. Head down. Sit normal, make yourself as small as possible big gals and fellas.
For us native New Yorkers, you know the deal. F everyone and try to get to work in one piece.

Need more trains. Longest wait time between trains for any subway line.

I would never think in a million years that I would advocate for the A, C or F train lines until I moved to Bay Ridge. Is the R train the means to keep people in Bay Ridge or out? This train truly sucks. I can’t fully express the distain for this slow and always delayed train. Out of a 5 day work week, it’s delayed 3 to 4 days. Sometimes in the mornings, I get the double whammy of the R fuckery and then D train fuckery — I can discuss the D trains never ending sick passengers in another post. I digress, the R train needs major improvements and it’s sickening that the MTA raises the fare at a whim and nothing improves. This train might cause me to move!

This train is fucking disgusting!!!
When I took the Manhattan and Brooklyn bound R, I just rarely saw a dead roach on the floor, no joke… It was on the floor where I sat and I have to sit at another place, but how can a roach appears in the train? Is it because of food remains or snack wrappers from the floor? I don’t know how that nasty creature shows up out of nowhere.
I want to rate this as a –5 instead of a one star because the R train is the nastiest train in the whole MTA system compare to the L.

There comes a time in life where this train feels like it’s taking forever to come, and that’s what we call the «R» train. The «R» train is literally one of the worst subway lines in NYC. The wait time for this train can be pretty long depending on the time of day your using it, especially in Brooklyn since it’s the only local subway line that runs besides the «D» & «N» in Brooklyn. There use to be a second local train that ran with the «R» in Brooklyn known as the «M» which helped the «R» in Brooklyn and the former subway line known as the «W» which helped the «R“in Manhattan. But because of the MTA’s budget issues, the «W» was cut, the «M» was moved to replace a former subway line called the «V» and pretty much the «R» stayed the same while the «N» replaced the «W». So to sum things up: the «R» sucks lol.

I can’t really say I hate the R cause there are days when I rely on the R due to the stupid work on the 7. However, it seems that I always wait FOREVER for R especially in Queens side going to Manhattan. Not sure why but yeah that happens especially during non rush hour. I don’t mind waiting but there are times when you just want to arrive at your destination as fast as you can.
As for the cleanliness, um good luck with experiencing clean condition in the R. it is always an issue and always seem a favorite for people to dump their garbage here. I can easily find rolling Gatorade bottle or scattered newspapers or leftover gums here and there or stains on the seat.

The R is good alternative to the E or F when transporting a lot or I’m early and just need space.

By far the worst and most unreliable train in the NYC Subway system. It takes forever for one to even get to the station when you’ve been waiting 20 – 25 minites. Meanwhile, the one heading on the opposite side will always see 2 – 3 trains in 20 – 25 minutes. Very late, very packed when it does come, since all those people waiting pack in like sardines, and it’s extremely inconvenient. And I take it from the Whitehall Station, go ahead and wait for the train to come from Brooklyn, you’ll be deaf when it passes through. It is so loud at that station when it comes screeching in from Brooklyn. Take the N or Q line instead.

Ever sit at Rush Hour, going form Queens to Manhattan… and watch 10 empty trains go by, waiting 10, 15 or more mins for the R to show up? Well I have, and do every frickin’ day.
This is by far the crappiest train in all the city. Whoever is managing this thing needs to be fired.
The cars are crappy as hell, horrible design that punishes its users.
A train that seems to be a vital artery from one side of the city to the other, yet never seems to actually serve is riders.
Ive spent countless hours stuck in the tunnels, or forced to quick-​search for alternate paths from somewhere the R train just decides to die on us.
The AC is barely there… but hey. when you never update or fix your cars. what do you expect.
I feel like the MTA should be paying ME to ride that thing… I can’t even imagine what the hell they do with our MILLIONS OF DOLLARS we pour into it every frickin’ day just on fares alone. Forget the kickbacks and tax payer dollars they ALSO GET FROM US.
if you have ANY OPTIONS… TAKE THEM. The R train is the Reject train…

The most unreliable line in the entire NYC subway system.

My return trip to NYC and this line was my go to train. Got me to where I wanted to be. Had a car to ourselves and let loose. It’s still a jerky abrupt start which always makes me giggle. Then it smoothes out. Had to get to Times Square and caught a little crowd but it wasn’t to packed. People were chill compared to some other lines I’ve been on. Not having to drive for a week and take the subway for a small fee in a walkable city is Bombay baby! Love that and this city

I used to live off of the R line and I love this line. For the most part runs on time and is frequent enough where you don’t wait too long. It is local so it makes alot of stops. I took the line from Queens to Manhatten almostt every day for 3 years.

Your Good Ol’ Local Train
Overall: 2.75 Stars
While it isn’t the most reliable train (more reliable than most trains), it is one of the less crowded trains.
If the R train arrives close to your destination similar to the express trains I recommend taking the R train since the odds of getting a seat a far greater. However, it will take 5 – 10 minutes longer depending on where you get on in Queens (uncertain about Brooklyn since Queens is the best borough [I’m ready for the hat e mail]).
The cleanliness is lacking on these trains, mainly because they consist of older train models (Old F Trains).
It is uncommon for the so-​called «entertainers» to perform on the R train, which is a major plus.

The R train is a local train. It’s not supposed to be fast, or go express. I take it during rush hour so I can get a seat, and read a book. I time my commute so I can get to work on time and not be bothered by all the rush hour crowds. Honestly, it runs on time. Only reason why it doesnt run on time is because someone gets sick and delays the train (usually). Not a great train for getting home late at night, because it slows down and become a shuttle train to Bay Ridge, but it does what it’s supposed to do during the week. For a local train running in a major metrpolis it runs on time and is consistent. I like the older trains because there are more seats. Screw the new trains. There are less seats and the MTA hopes that we all cram together like a bunch of sardines in a tin can. Eff that.

This is purely based on my experiences commuting from Forest Hills to Manhattan:
Much like the M train, the R train isn’t ever my go-​to train. When you have the E/​F to shoot you across Queens in half the time, you rarely ever contemplate getting on the M/​R. My only reasons for ever getting on the M/​R are: (1) I’m running late and an M or R came first, so I made an impulse decision, which usually costs me more time in the end. (2) The E/​F are down or running with delays or it’s rush hour and they’re ridiculously cramped — basically any reason that I’d want to avoid the E/​F. (3) I’m going to Elmhurst, the malls around Woodhaven, etc. and need a local train to get me there.
Overall, the R is decent. The trains running on this line are usually the older kind (the ones with yellow and orange seats, arranged in a funky fashion — these trains have been around since I was a little kid, which is more than 2 decades ago… that’s how effing old these trains are.) The M line has newer trains. During rush hour, getting out of Manhattan, you really don’t want to be getting on the R cause it attracts Astorians too, which means it gets a lot more crowded than the M… sometimes even comparably crowded to the E/​F.

Doesn’t go to lower Manhattan currently so you’ll have to transfer at Canal street. This train is local in all the boroughs it passes through. Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. I uses to take this train to my former job in Park Slope. Took so long to come. I loved when the M train passed through in 2010… ugh. But anyway, I used to take this train to Rector street to get to my high school.
