LIRR Forest Hills Station

LIRR Forest Hills is a charming station with architecture of the appeal of a communal community. While waiting for your train to arrive the view from street level is very quaint and charming to admire. The red architecture of this Station Square area is well maintained despite being a century old. The nearby Tudor houses of Forest Hills Gardens take visitors to the garden communities of England. There is a small waiting room of LIRR Forest Hills station. As a former resident of Forest Hills, I enjoyed this area mainly for the shops, restaurants, cafes, financial services for the numerous amenities available.

An excellent place to catch a train into the city if you don’t want to take the subway. It only costs a bit more and you can avoid a lot of construction.

The train schedule can be much to be desired on weekdays. Apparently, if you don’t make the 8:48 you won’t get another train until 10. It’s located in a nice little suburban looking area, though & it’s right near Austin Street. I never noticed it until more recently. You also can’t argue the convenience of the ticket machines or the platform location. The station is also fully outside so take that as you want to.

Meeting at the Half Moon was quite the popular location during the 80’s as our centrally located, place of assembly prior to hopping on the LIRR to hit up the weekends Manhattans music scene.
I’m referring to the southward facing seating area at the foot of the westbound tracks. That was then, so now its where I consume whatever lunch I’ve grabbed from Austin Street and just sit, relax, people watch and absorb the surroundings. Yet to this very day, I still find myself overcome with the desire to just have a little peek inside the 4 foot circumferenced guard tower’s cone, it intrigues me so.
Having lived across Station Square I remember when the LIRR was having structural issues, people noticed a large crack developed from the top above the half moon, continuing to bottom of the façade. As with some other Forest Hills public works projects, the well heeled ponied up the cabbage for the necessary transformation and a few landscaping appointments. There’s a plaque denoting the doners, my ex’s parents included. (Its my opinion that they probably wish they hadn’t, tough times have apparently befallen my pompous friends)
According to a book published in 2006 titled – gosh, the names evading me, a history of Forest Hills as it were, which indicated in detail the events The Rough Rider avoided to give a turn of the century speech. Apparently cought quite a bit of flack for it.
I timed the Forest Hills to Penn Station run yesterday, at 16.5 minutes its the fastest and most convenient way into Manhattan.

This LIRR station is lovely and charming. I love the feel of the architecture surrounding the train station and is one of my favorite locations to catch the train either home to LI or to Manhattan because it is a much nice vibe then riding the subway.

Beautiful station. Probably the most beautiful LIRR station I have ever been to. Affordable weekend ticket from Forest Hills into Manhattan.
CONS:
On freezing days, the indoor waiting room is often locked. Tonight, it was 15 degrees outside, and it made it difficult ten minutes later to write this review.

Great station. Without a doubt, the nicest in Queens, possibly the whole LIRR line.
In keeping with Forest Hills Gardens rules, the roof tops are all red tiled and the station has a feel from another era. Built in 1909 as folks ventured out to the woods of Queens from Manhatten, it is a throwback of what a train station should be; great architecture, well run and clean.
I took the train for over 10 years when I worked in Midtown, and rarely had a problem with late trains, or really even getting a seat. The Forest Hills station is only a 10 minute ride to Penn, so it’s a quick trip.
If you’re a history buff like myself, you’ll be interested to know the great Teddy Roosevelt gave a speech from the station here in the early 1900’s.
If you are ever in Forest Hills and need to get to the city quick, try the Forest Hills station. Maybe get there early and enjoy the scenic views of Station Square from the platform.

Pretty station and good food and shopping in the area…

So, I’ve taken the LIRR from Westbury to this station a few times when coming home from my bf’s place, and I must say, I’m actually quite a fan of this station. As some reviewers have already pointed out, it’s very rare that you find a train station in nyc that’s actually nice to look at and not a filthy mess. Still, besides that, this station really isn’t all that noteworthy. The LIRR is also over-​priced but that’s a different matter. The station architecture is kind of reminiscent of old country cottages, for lack of a better description. It’s befitting since this station serves also as a transition from Austin Street to Forest Hills Gardens (the millionaire houses/​mansions in Forest Hills, sold/​owned by Sotheby’s, and all fashioned in pseudo-​Tudor-​esque architectural styles).

one of the rare photogenic mass transit stops, the Forest Hills LIRR is more than a century old. the nearby Tudor houses contrast with the newer high-​rises, while Mordorhattan looms ominously in the distance.
it’s surprisingly well-​maintained and clean. it has a classic look, and the whole Station Square recalls a time gone by when Teddy Roosevelt himself came to speak here. sometimes it’s great to just grab a sandwich or snack and sit in Station Square, admiring a century’s worth of architecture.
the waiting rooms are actually fairly clean and relatively warm.
I have to admit, for $ 1.50 more than a subway ride, it’s nice to have an über-​quick ride right into Penn Station (about 15 minutes). consider the inevitable subway construction snarls on weekends (which are the only times I take mass transit) and it’s worth it ESPECIALLY if you are trying to make a connection to NJTransit at Penn.

Having grown up on Long Island, I can tell you that many of the LIRR stations are *WAY* worse than this one… dirtier, in scuzzier areas, etc. This one is pretty good as far as LIRR is concerned. It’s in a nice area, there’s some seating, it doesn’t smell, and the ticket machines work properly. The drawbacks are that the inside waiting area/isn’t on the platform, and the platform is only four cars long. That’s not an issue if you’re departing from FH, but if you’re arriving at FH from another station, make sure you’re in the first four cars, otherwise you’re stuck on the train till Woodside or Penn Station.
