The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection

My absolute favorite hotel, not only in Manhattan but the US. Marriott did a great job renovating this property, but still allowing the old charm to remain.
I sit in the lobby imagining what it must have been like sitting here with Dorothy Parker and the rest of the round table!
The staff is fantastic — they always make me feel like I am a valued guest. From Jennie & Edwin at the front desk, to Chuck at the restaurant, to Jermaine, Peter to Kevin.
I don’t think there is another property in this city I would ever want to stay at. This is my home when I come here. Just wish it was more often!

The Algonquin is a delightful hotel. We will stay here again. The majority of the staff were absolutely spot on. The room was comfortable, clean, and well outfitted. We did not have any food so no opinion there. The evening lobby bar service was good.
All in all a great experience.

My fiancé and I stayed at this hotel last month, it was very boutique style. The rooms were very tiny but very well decorated. You do get to hear your neighbors in the hallway but we still enjoyed our stay there. The location is perfect!

Came for an after work drink and it was fine. The waiters were a little brusque. Overall the drinks were fine but overpriced. The setting is nice and it is a decent hotel bar.

If you are in the market to experience classic/​old NYC — then you need to check out the Algonquin Hotel in Time Square. As one of the original hotels in NYC, this property offers modern conveniences — while giving the charm of the early 1900’s.
Being that it is also a Marriott Autograph Hotel, you can bank your Marriott points while trying something different.
The standard rooms are small, so if you are looking for a traditional hotel room size, then you will either need to consider a suite or another property. Additionally, the walls seemed a bit thinner than normal — so you may hear your neighbors.
The gym was surprisingly big and modern. There were plenty of cardio machines, free weights, and exercise equipment.
Overall, I recommend that you give it a try if you are into turn of the century /​classic hotels.

I booked this place because it has a little bit of history but I also get Marriott points. I like history! Overall no major complaints but it lacked some of the things I’m used to in your typical Marriott. They don’t have room service which I guess isn’t huge since there are plenty of places to order delivery from nearby and given my experience in the restaurant probably would not have ordered room service anyway. There is also no mini bar in the room, just bottle water. It’s an older building so the heater was very loud and I could hear the people next door having sex but that’s a lot of New York hotels. Somewhat random but I also didn’t like that the self service coffee was in the bar which gets pretty crowded at night. I felt uncomfortable getting a cup in my sweatpants.

This elegant hotel has lost its ambience and has disappointed us repeatedly over the recent past. What was once the epitome of Manhattan class has trended in the direction of an interstate truck stop. The glow is gone, the caricatures are garish and the management is arrogant. Even the wait staff mourned the passing of a legend. Don’t ask for wine in stemware or an after dinner drink in a snifter, they have gone the way of Dorothy Parker and her entourage, they are regurgitating in their graves. Definitely miss this travesty on your next trip to Manhattan.

Due to my Marriott status I’ve had a couple of stays here to close out required nights to maintain my level for the year. All well worth it, this place is as classic New York as you can get.
Rooms are small but cozy, and not cozy in that real-​estate broker type of way which actually means cramped. The renovation a couple of years back really helped this place out while still not losing any of its charm. Location is splendid for tourists, as a local it was still far enough form Times Square to not be imposing.
Would gladly return.

Walking the stairs is what you will be doing if you stay here! Even on the rare occasion both elevators were working the wait was so long it wasn’t worth it b/​c the elevators moved so slow. Most folks climb the stairs, even to the 5^th floors and higher. Even elderly ladies were having to huff and puff up several flights. You get the picture, I could go on…
Next the staff, not too friendly. Less friendly or courteous than a Holiday Inn Express. Also, if you are a Marriott Rewards member there are no perks.
The room was small, even by NYC standards. It was well appointed and clean, however the mattress was not as nice as many Marriott’s. The dresser is about 15 inches wide, no kidding.
The shower does not allow you to adjust the water, so if you like laser beam water flow then you are good.
The lobby is nice, lots of dark woods and nostalgia.
Breakfast is good.
I will not stay here again.

I stayed here a few weeks ago while staying in Manhattan for an event, and let me tell you: It’s GORGEOUS. I was so pleasantly surprised by how pretty and well kept this room was, because, you know, sometimes you stay places and though it looks great online, it doesn’t look that fabulous in person. That was not the case here!
Call me strange, but in addition to the gorgeous bathroom with its perfect lighting and pretty tiling in the showers, I loved that there were Q-​Tips and cotton balls provided, because us ladies need those things when cleaning up after a night on the town in Manhattan! It was a simple, but very nice touch that I think more hotels need to do. It just gives that little extra nice touch.
I loved how pretty the staircases were, even though they were a little slim– they really add character. This place is such a nice mix of classic and modern.
Oh, and Matilda is such a little sweetheart! I would love to stay here sometime again soon! :)

The location is good for a brief visit to Time Square and some good restaurants. The bar and lobby area are funky with Blue Bar’s lighting being burdened with blue and the lobby having lots of small tables at cocktail hour filled with business folks enjoy a good drink with popcorn. Attendance was strong in the lobby, but not the bar.
The rooms are very small and the service not the experience I have had a Marriott properties. The bell-​people were brutal in demanding to «service» my baggage. He was so insistent on taking my bag from me that I refused to tip them because of the heavy handedness. The reception emphasizing being an old hotel catering to early 19^th century writers which was a nice fact to know the first time he mentioned it. My succinct complaint is that the service and experience was good from the Über drop off, but declined spectacularly with the bellman, the check in reception, and small room with a view of a brick wall.

I would give 3.5 stars if possible. Top strengths are great location (walking distance to tons of NYC faves), nice free continental breakfast for elite Marriott members (amazing orange juice and homemade pumpkin bread among other goodies), very soft bed linens, cozy lobby, minimal street noise heard from room and nice workout facilities.
Cons: creaky bed that any time one of us turned or moved at all would wake up the other, very small shower (had to turn a certain way to have enough room to raise my arms to wash hair and shaving legs was next to impossible), and very loud when any other room would shut their door made it difficult to sleep in on our vacation.
The service was fine with a special bright spot. Victor did an outstanding job in restaurant and really made our breakfasts special. Otherwise staff was polite but not spectacular. For the cost, I’d likely try a different property next time as good sleep is a priority for us.

Great, location. Off the beaten path, but still within walking distance to Times Square and many amenities, if that’s what you prefer. Rooms are smaller, but maintain a lot of character of the time. The hotel has a nice bar and dining. Service has been high quality. Checking out tomorrow.
I haven’t see the cat the bellman mentioned. But I don’t think the idea of a cat wandering in a public hotel is nostalgic or cute.

Yo, this hotel, yo…
So, I had to stay here while on an audit in the city for a week. I have to say it was a pleasant stay.
–I was able to check in at 09:00 on my first day.
–there’s a cat that lives here.
–this place is old, historical and whatnot, yet the amenities were modern and excellent.
–great cleaning staff
–helpful desk staff
–did I mention a cat lives here?
if you’re tall you might wanna clarify when making a reservation you want the king size bed. my feet hung off the end of my bed, and i’m only 6’3″. I didn’t complain but my colleague did and they happily moved her to a room with a bigger bed (she’s only like 5’2″ tho… I dunno.) I just slept diagonally. lulz.
I saw the cat once, as it was repositioning itself mid catnap. I forgot to look for it the rest of the time.
the continental breakfast here was off the rails. (and the woman that is the host for the dining area… oowee, she is fine.) choice of:
— irish oatmeal with a gang of raisins and strawberries and blueberries and brown sugar — best. oatmeal. ever.
— «The New Yorker» an everything bagel with homemade creamcheese and a gang of salmon. it was like the breakfast sandwich of champions.
— something else I don’t remember because I never ordered it.
I also had drinks in this dining area one night — I started off with a bourbon based drink that I found disappointing, and then I tried their Old Fashioned… yo, I didn’t start off with that one because it didn’t read well on the menu, but it was EXCELLENT. and powerful.
i’d stay here again. no doubt.
oh, OH! I almost forgot! the soap/​shampoo/​conditioner here is AMAZING!

The Algonquin provided a relaxing environment for drinks and appetizers. There were comfy leather chairs and stuffed couches everywhere to lounge on while dining. I had a peach mojito which was amazing! I also ordered the mozzarella stuffed meatballs and lobster rolls from the bar menu. I was blown away by the meatballs. They were incredibly flavorful and filling. I wasn’t as impressed with the lobster rolls. They were heavily loaded with celery and there was way too much bread in proportion to lobster mixture. Not a fan. Service was good and everyone was very helpful. Great stop if you’re trying to stay away from times square and enjoy a unique atmosphere.

Would give it 3 ½ stars if I could.
The good: excellent location, has 3 or 4 subway stations within walking distance. Room was spacious. Had a king suite with a bedroom & pullout couch for kids. Did not feel cramped at all. Friendly & helpful staff.
The ok: king bed was uncomfortable & mattress was worn, but we have a brand new bed at home so our standards are high. Have to put service tag on door in order to get maid service. Did not know that on 1^st day. Was ok once we figured out.
The annoyances: is a Marriott property, but independent at the same time. Received email from Marriott concierge a week before trip offering different services. One was free transportation from the airport. Received confirmation. When we arrived it turned out this service does not exist at this hotel. They offered transportation, but it was not free. We took taxi instead. Also, did not have usual Marriott amenities.
There was nothing bad about our stay, but wish independence from Marriott was clear at the beginning.

Cozy, fantastically renovated and located hotel for theatre aficionados. A stone’s throw from Times Square, you’re close to almost all of the theatres and you also are an easy walk from Rockefeller Center, Grand Central, the Bryant Park subway station, plus you can do a mean hotel bar hop right on your own block. You’ve got the Algonquin’s Blue Bar, the Iroquois Hotel’s small bar in the back (go early), M Bar at Mansfield, the Sofitel bar, and 44 at the Royalton.
The lobby is historic and very charming, with plenty of comfortable seating, and no one will hassle you if you just want to take a load off for a minute and grab some water. The Blue Bar offers very nice cocktails and bartenders with some New York crustiness who are softies underneath.
I got a room on the 8^th floor – I had reserved a queen, but my Marriott membership preferences indicate king bed, so they assigned me one of those. The room itself actually has more space in it than I thought. You can actually walk all the way around the bed without bumping into anything and open all the doors and drawers as well. The little bay window with the seating nook is a nice touch and makes the room feel bigger as well. (There is absolutely no view unless you have a fire escape fetish.) I had an incredible night’s sleep in the comfortable bed, which has a nifty backlit photo of the city as a headboard. All the furniture and textiles are in great shape and everything smells very fresh – not a hint of mustiness in this century-​plus-​year-​old building. The closet in my room was narrow but deep. The bathroom is quite small, but well appointed with a nice art deco accent tile in the shower. It was also spotlessly clean.
They’ve kept the iron staircase which goes up the middle of the hotel, but the elevators are swift. I never waited more than a few seconds for one. The staff treated my wonderfully – check-​in was a great welcome, room service breakfast came right on time with all special requests granted, etc. In general, I loved the feel and the history of the building, the accommodations are great, and the hospitality was warm and genuine. Plus you really can’t beat that location for a visit to midtown, so I think I have a new go-​to hotel for my NYC trips.

This is my friends favorite bar. Everyone loves the cocktails here but they are certainly pricey.
I had the New York cocktail, which had Buffalo Trace, my new favorite! It was a girl looking drink that packed a punch ! Or maybe it was that I ordered three of them? Hah
My girlfriend had a gin martini with a twist. I don’t know how she drinks those, it’s definitely an acquired taste. One that I clearly never acquired.
My waiter was Alamgir, he is THE BEST! He was always making sure I got the last sip in before he took my cocktail away. I can appreciate a man who doesn’t waste liquor ! Considering it is a 17 dollar cocktail, it isn’t to be wasted :)
They give you popcorn, it was a little stale
But the flavoring was so good. It was like a sweet chili flavoring, I was totally a fan. We asked for two bags, yes I am a porker :)
It usually has an older crowd, not really meant for a pick up place unless you are looking for 45 and up. Just go after work for
A nice relaxing cocktail in an upscale environment!

Such a cool hotel that is filled with so much history. Sat in the lobby with a couple friends and enjoyed a beer. They brought over some complimentary popcorn, which was surprising but definitely welcomed. The only disappointment was not being able to see Matilda. Apparently there was a complaint, so the cat is no longer allowed in the lobby. If you’re going just to visit the pet, you might as well stay home.

Once you get beyond the «oh wow, this room is the size of a closet» feeling that happens so frequently in NYC or Europe, you’ll find that this hotel is pretty good. I was in one of the rooms facing the back, so while I had no view it was very quiet — which is no small feat in a hotel two blocks off Times Square. They also provided two sets of ear plugs, which is a nice thought in this area. You may need them if your room faces 44^th.
A+ to the housekeeping staff who didn’t disturb my mad piles of papers, but managed to get everything cleaned up each day.
The lobby is a decent size with plenty of seating, and they offer coffee in the mornings. No water was provided in the lobby, and to have a carafe of water is pretty standard in Marriotts across the country. That would be a good addition here.
My room (815) was large enough for the bed, a small desk, a chair and a dresser. It also had a separate closet. The bathroom was small, of course, but quite nice for a NYC location. There’s a small shower stall, a sink, a toilet, a heater for those cold winter mornings, and a small shelf for your bathroom items.
If you’re gold or platinum with Marriott, don’t fret over the lack of a concierge lounge. Breakfast is included in your rate — well, mostly included. They comp the continental breakfast, and you can pay a small surcharge for other items off the menu. The French Toast did not come at additional cost, the eggs benedict were only $ 4 extra. Not so bad for NYC.
Despite some trouble checking in which was the fault of Marriott’s reservation system, the front desk personnel were generally pleasant. The concierge working during the week was helpful with dinner recommendations and directions to certain city sights.
The best thing about this hotel is its location. As I said, you’re only a couple blocks away from Times Square, so if theater is on your agenda you’re in the right place. All the theaters I visited (Cort, Kerr, Majestic, and AA) were within a six block walk from the hotel. It’s nice not to have to mess around with cabs or the subway after you’ve seen a great show — and there are plenty of good restaurant options in the neighborhood.
Overall, I’d recommend this hotel to others. I felt safe, secure, and definitely slept well.
