History
Established in 1916.
Peter McManus first NYC opening was on 19th between 6th and 7th after leaving its post in Longford, Ireland. In 1936, a few years after prohibition ended, it moved to its current location. It has been passed down from Peter McManus to his son James McManus Sr shortly after James Sr returned home from WW2 and earning 2 purple hearts. James McManus Jr. starting his reign in 1974 and is the current proprietor along with his son Justin James McManus.
Over the years, Peter McManus Café has been known as the staple of Chelsea. As everything around the pub has changed, «The Store» as referred to by the McManus family has stayed the same. The physical bar, woodworking, and tiffany windows are all from the 1930’s, just the tv’s and jukebox are new additions in this landmark.
The throwback feel has made it very attractive for movie and film shoots an it has appeared in dozens of projects including Seinfeld, Highlander, SNL, Keeping the Faith, Law and Order, and The Other Guys.
