Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Pop-Up

This is worth the wait and the price! I am a huge fan of most of their ice cream flavors, my favorites are Backyard Mint and Dark Chocolate, but above all The Brown Butter Almond Brittle flavor is out of this world good.
The texture of Jeni’s is wonderful; it sort of sits on your tongue/​palate for longer than usual. It’s decadent but does not taste overly decadent ala Ben & Jerry’s.
I also love that they don’t use eggs in their ice cream. It’s so hard to find a gourmet ice cream that does not rely heavily on egg yolks for texture/​consistency, but Jeni’s does not and they have perfected a great recipe.
I also recommend the Salty Caramel and the Black Cat Espresso.

Yay! I am so exicted Jeni’s has a location in NYC. I own her cookbook and make her ice cream all of the time, so it was a dream for me to find some of the real deal without searching grocery stores around the city for pints. It totally hit the spot after a miss with Ivan Ramen. Since there were a few of us I had everyone get a different flavor so we could try them all. The salted caramel was obviously way better then any time I ever made it so I am going to need to go back to the drawing board on that one, especially because the caramel is homemade. All of the other flavors were great, and I was happy to hear that they change up the flavors periodically so I can come back and try others even if the Market is out of the way!

Had the black currant lambic sorbet, lime cardamom buttermilk frozen yogurt, and the butternut pumpkin with amaretti cookies ice cream. Three scoops for $ 7. A little on the pricy side but definitely worth it. They pack so much flavor in all of their ice creams it’s insane. And they always have the funnest [sic] flavors! These three flavors were seasonal so definitely try them before they get rotated out. The other flavors they had on site were pretty boring to be honest, such as vanilla and espresso. The only reason this place doesn’t get a 5 is because there were only 8 flavors available. Yes, I know that it is a pop-​up shop, but every other Jeni’s has like 50 flavors available and I was really looking forward to trying more, especially even more exotic ones like intelligentsia black cat espresso or the all-​time favorite sweet potato and toasted marshmallows. Having the option would’ve been lovely and I would’ve eaten the whole place up!

Heard great things about this place, and it did not disappoint!
Came here right after I ate at Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop (see separate review) because I always need dessert to round out my meals haha. I was a little taken back when I first checked the flavors. Some of them were too crazy/​out there for me, sadly (i.e. the sweet corn with raspberries and the milk chocolate bombay). I ended up getting a small of just the salted caramel (I didn’t know it was two scoops! I missed out on mixing two flavors haha). I’m definitely going to have to come back here and redeem myself lol.
The salted caramel, however, was pretty spot on. It was a great mix of salty and sweet. A lot of salted caramel ice creams tend to be cloyingly sweet, but theirs is just the right balance.

This ice cream totally blows my mind. I’m a huge ice cream snob, and really enjoy super creamy ice cream. In my opinion, this place has a better ice cream base than morgenstern’s. The base is incredibly creamy, rich and smooth, and it’s not too sweet. The flavors are really sophisticated, creative and does not disappoint. Riesling poached pear, YES please! My favorite is the backyard mint paired with the dark chocolate. My only disappointment is the price. $ 6 for a small. really?

Definitely have love for Jeni’s.
I have had their pre-​packaged version and thought it was okay, nothing to get crazy about. The hubby has the ice cream recipe book but hasn’t explored it yet.
The fresh version — Oh Yeah! Crazy good ice cream! This stand is extremely generous with the samples — you can try them all before you make your final selection. Between the 4 of us, we had:
Sweet Corn with Raspberries — hubby loved
Vanilla — my girls loved
Salted Caramel — all around favorite
Pineapple Upside Down Cake — I believe this was yogurt, but WOW. Totally delicious. Far and away my favorite.
The servings are small and a bit pricy. My girls were disappointed there weren’t any sprinkles (kids…).
All in all delicious. The hubby will definitely be doing some further examination of their ice cream recipe book.

This is gourmet ice cream and it’s quite good in small portions. However, I can never finish it by myself — even a size small — because it’s way too sweet and decadent for me personally (makes me think of the typical Midwest palate, but I shouldn’t be classifying taste buds by geography). People with a big sweet tooth definitely need to come here because this is your heaven!
Delicious flavors I’ve tried:
— pineapple upside down cake
— Riesling poached pear
— wildberry lavender
— backyard mint (probably the only flavor I can potentially finish by myself)
All the flavor names are quite exciting sounding (whisky pecan?!), so I will still be back to try them and have a friend in tow to help me finish.
Keep in mind that gourmet ice cream = pricey. However, even the small size gives you 2 scoops so you can combine the flavors and try them all.

This ice cream was pretty disappointing. I had high hopes for flavors such as sweet corn and raspberries and sweet cream biscuits and peach jam, yet they definitely were not up to par. The sweet corn and raspberries was completely overpowered by the overly sweet raspberries. The sweet cream biscuits was nothing special and the biscuits within were not super high quality. The ice cream texture itself was fine but nothing noteworthy.
With so many amazing ice cream options in the city, there is no reason to settle for Jeni’s. It really just seems like a wannabe Oddfellows or Ample Hills, with catchy flavors but alas they cannot deliver.

Yup, I’m giving this place a 5. I didn’t think the size was too small like other people, I thought the size was just right, though it’s true –it’s not the cheapest at all. I got the Sweet Corn and Black Raspberry along with the Chocolate Bombay. Holy schmo –I LOVED both. It is definitely rich ice cream, though, so if you like lighter styles you may not want to come here.
My sister also had the pear yesterday which was SO YUMMY and flavorful. It’s definitely a great treat with friends, but not an everyday occasion type of place. Hope they come back to NY soon!

Meh. Second time trying and it’s just ok. $ 6 gets you two measly size scoops but maybe the smaller sizes are better. The ice cream is just too rich and sweet like eating frozen condensed milk. After two scoops it’s overwhelming.
Maybe I’m getting old and don’t like sugar as much as I used to. I much prefer the more subtle flavors and quality ice cream like Van Leuwen.

I found out about Jeni’s from Well+Good NYC this morning and made the trek out there in the afternoon.
They were very friendly and let us sample all the flavors they had available today: chocolate Bombay, vanilla, pear, lemon, wild berry lavender, sweet biscuits and peach and pineapple upside down cake. They ran out of the salty caramel (maybe next time!).
I had three scoops on a cone: chocolate Bombay, vanilla and sweet biscuits and peach jam. I was worried that these three together wouldn’t work, but it was very delicious!
I thought the coconut in the Bombay was interesting, not in a bad way. I loved coming across a big piece of biscuit in my ice cream, and I’ve never had a vanilla taste this good! So vanilla-​y. My brother and friend had their other flavors, also three flavors on a cone.
I plan to come back before the pop-​up goes away. If anyone could let me know, do they come to NYC every summer? I highly recommend their ice creams!

Don’t pass on the Pineapple Upside Down Cake Buttermilk flavor. It was my favorite flavor. The dark chocolate, salted caramel and lemon were all good and made a great combo but when I go back my first pick will definitely be the pineapple upside down flavor. The ice cream can be slightly expensive but 4 flavors for $ 8 is a great deal. Don’t be shy to ask for samples.

I don’t get it.
Apparently people throughout the Midwest swear by this stuff, but I was not understanding why there would be massive lines at this new popup location inside Gotham West Market.
Lucky for me I was away on vacation when it opened, or I would’ve been one of the fools partaking in yet another line for food in NYC. A week later, I was able to stroll right up and order.
I got the smallest size, which is a very tiny scoop for $ 6. I’m ok with overpaying for ice cream (I love you Morgenstern’s), as long as it’s really good. Unfortunately, it didn’t really meet my expectations.
The Salty Caramel was quite good, as Salty Caramel always is. It was very creamy and much more on the soft side rather than the dense, chewy kind of ice cream. However, the other flavor I tried really left a bad taste in my mouth, the Milk Chocolate Bombay. The major problem was the really chewy pieces of coconut that featured heavily in the scoop. They were very hard and pretty unpleasant to bite through. It was a 180 from the smooth Salty Caramel.
With 6 flavors in total to try, I will probably return to try some of the others. As the Milk Chocolate Bombay was a new flavor exclusive to this location, perhaps it was a misstep and I need to try the classics. I would say it makes more sense to just get 3, or even 4 scoops, since each additional scoop after the small is only $ 1 more, but the ice cream is quite melty, so more than 2 scoops just doesn’t really work logistically, even for someone like me that inhales ice cream.
Given that this is the only real dessert option in Gotham West Market, I’ll definitely give it another shot next time I’m there. Otherwise, with so many great shops these days, it’s worth the trek to Brooklyn for Ample Hills or Oddfellows, or any number of the great places in the East Village.

I would give five stars based on the flavor alone; their vanilla bean and salty caramel are some of the best ice creams I’ve ever had. My only issue is that the portion is minuscule; you only get two tiny scoops for $ 6! I recommend that you head over to the Brooklyn Kitchen (within Gotham West Market as well) or Dean & DeLuca to get their pints instead.

I had never heard of Jenni’s before but it seemed to be popular on other states once I did a quick internet search. This is the pop up store all the way on the West side and boy was the place crowded for opening day. Some of these offers and stuff you would think everyone in NY heard about this new opening. There were specific flavor to this NY location like Milk Chocolate Bombay (just got quick sample did not order that one). The place was crowded because they must have really advertised to come out. Yea I did come out I know some people were sampling everything as someone else mentioned but $ 7 is alot, portion was not that big, I was not full after. It did taste good though. I got the lavender Wildberry, Vanilla and salted caramel. Lavender was just okay, Vanilla tasted perfectly and so did salted caramel (excellent). It is definitely high quality ice cream, somethings to do. with high amounts of butterfat. The portions could be bjgger, it was three half scoops for $ 7 or 4 for $ 8. All I am saying is whenever I leave 16 handles or Yogurtland, I never leave hungry. I guess this is like a hey, I will definitely try this ONCE kind of place.

Wildberry lavender & milk chocolate bombay were both very good, but given the premium I can find justifying a splurge at this summer popup tough even for folks like me who are forever indebted to their pints.

Ugh, I don’t want to be one of THOSE people who give places 1 star for not even having any of the product … but after waiting 30 mins on opening day to get ice cream and then realizing I’d soon have to wait over 2 hours to even get near the front, I decided to cut my losses and leave. I understand people liking to sample before they buy — but Jeni’s let EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. sample EVERY. SINGLE. FLAVOR. It was redonks! Hopefully I can update my review once I actually get a shot at trying this place!

I was here today with two friends and we had some excellent ramen at Ivan Ramen (review forthcoming). But, I had to write this revue first b/​c I’m very much an ice cream loving individual. My friends all had the exact same opinion as me so take this as 3 person’s review:
I must admit I’ve paid $ 12 for a pint of Jeni’s ice cream before. It is good. It’s not MIND BLOWING like many people think. But, just put that said for a second. .. . Here are the simple facts — this place is meant as a tourist trap in my humble opinion. The smalls size they have is two TINY TINY TINY TINY scoops for $ 6.00! That is absolutely ABSURD There is so much great ice cream in this city, which I’m much more attached to, and it is nearly ½ the price. In fact, you might as well go to Brooklyn Kitchen in Gotham Market and buy a pint of Jenis (if that’s really what you need) b/​c it makes so much more sense. I felt like I was ripped off.
And, the quality of the ice cream is good. It’s NOT great. There is better ice cream/​gelato in THIS very city. Yes you heard me right. I’m a growing fan boy of Odd fellowe’s and Il Laboratirio del Gelato — go there instead. In my opinion the ice cream and choices are much better and the price is too. It’s a bummer the only dessert at that food market after a GREAT bowl of ramen is this. I was really hoping Jeni’s would live up to the hype and quality I’d hoped for — but I was very much disappointed. P. s I tried the salty caramel, the Chocolate Bombay, and Lavender.. . all OK. NOT GREAT.

My bf and I made a special trip to Gotham West Market, just so we could visit the Jeni’s Ice Cream pop-​up shop that opened this week.
I’ve been a long time fan of her flavours, and the ones at the shop are exceptional — they’re carrying classic Jeni’s flavours such as Wildberry Lavender and Salted Caramel, but they also have a flavour specific to this store, the Milk Chocolate Bombay. It’s a spicy gingerbready chocolate made with La Boîte curry spice, which tingles on the tongue. Quite delicious, but as the staff and I agreed, maybe too intense for a full scoop.
A small size gives you two scoops of whichever flavours you like, so my bf went for the classic but tasty Vanilla Bean, while I opted for the Salted Caramel and the Lemon Frozen Yogurt. An odd combo to be sure, but I thoroughly enjoyed the contrasts between the salty sweet caramel and the tart refreshing lemon.
If Jeni’s decides to open a permanent shop in NYC, I’m crossing my fingers that they’ll stock the Lime Cardamom frozen yogurt or the Whiskey & Pecans — by far two of my favourite flavours!

As recent immigrants from Ohio, how could we not celebrate Jeni’s splendidity today in NYC? She’s always been loyal and I’ve tried a decent amount of flavors, rarely failing at any of them. Today i tried the wild lavender and upside down pineapple cake, vanilla bean, and milk choco Bombay. Vanilla bean is, from what i remember, an «expensive» import, so its probably the best plain Jane vanilla ive ever had. Lavender was the most exciting and milk chocolate with the spices the most unique– I’d skip that though. If jeni sticks around, expect more daring flavors.
