Good spicy Sichuan food. One of the most authentic I’ve tasted in the upper west side with decent prices and portions. If you don’t prefer too salty, just ask for them to cut back.

Soup dumplings(xiao lung tang bao) were edible but skin was ridiculously thick. Previously frozen? Gong bao(kung pao) chicken and Gan bien si ji dou(dry fried green beans) were absolutely tasteless. Where was the sichuan veggie in the bean dish? Where was the pungent sauce in the chicken? All went down the Americanization drain. If you like authentic Chinese food, don’t even consider this place.

Friendly workers, authentic Chinese food. Love the casserole, it’s just a little bit too spicy for us. Great spicy beef noodles too:) Never encountered a long wait either.

If you want a subpar food and service then this place is for you. Some dishes are edible however some are completely different from what’s on their menu. When my husband pointed this out the waiter argued that it was their restaurant version and he shouldn’t order it the next time. There was no apology; not even an attempt to correct or rectify the mistake. Please save yourselves from bad food… avoid this place!!!

The service is poor, this place doesn’t even have a green tea. The waiter wasn’t pay attention to us at all. We have to call him for everything. When we were leaving the host didn’t look at us, didn’t say anything; he was so busy playing with his cell phone. The place doesn’t look clean, the waiter brought rice holding the bowl with his hands inside… food was average. I wouldn’t recommended this place.

The people at this restaurant are dishonest people. I paid by credit card and they said their credit card machine has problem accepting tip and they suggested to pay cash for the tip. So we paid 18% tip in cash. When I asked for a copy of the credit card receipt, they said their machine has problem and could not print out a copy. So I just took the restaurant receipt. When I looked at my credit card statement later, I found out that they charged another 18% in tip. The food here is small portions and the taste is sub-par. The service is bad and the woman at the counter had a very bad attitude. She was cursing customers. Beware of this restaurant’s shoddy practices. If you decide to eat here and pay by credit card, make sure you check your credit card statement. It is best to avoid this dishonest business.

I’ll be honest. I don’t know a whole lot in regards to Chinese cuisine and typical dishes. I had dinner there with my brother in law, who lived in China for a while. He says that the restaurant is one of the most authentic, in that type of food tradition, you can find in Manhattan. The 4 of us shared 3 appetizers and 4 main courses. My favorite were the green beans, the double cooked pork(amazingly tender), and the pickled veggies(crunchy and tasty). The service was basic but good. The restaurant itself isn’t posh, but it is clean. Price wise it’s fairly reasonable.

After way too much mediocre Chinese in NYC this was excellent simple less expensive food. My crispy fish w ginger and scallions was very good. The tofu family dish was also good and my scallion pancake was excellent. Service very good and quick. Way better than any nearby Asian.

A huge list of $ 7.75 lunch specials to choose from. $ 5 Brooklyn lagers. Awesome food, I only finished half my lunch which came with the main dish, brown rice(just brown not fried) and a bowl of soup(hot and sour or egg drop — the hot/sour was awesome. I’d definitely recommend this place for an affordable lunch.

I’m not impressed but I’m not disappointed. For a Chinese restaurant in Upper West Side, it did pretty well to keep with authenticity. Soup dumplings — not as fresh, which you can tell by the skin(a little thicker and stickier) BUT it was still enjoyable and the soup was refreshing. Dan dan noodles — Yummy! I know most places make it different from each other but I enjoyed it all. It’s supposed to be spicy but I could handle it and I normally cannot take spicy. I would suggest this, for sure. Fairly cheap too(less than $ 10). Conch in Hot Oil — My boyfriends choice so he ate 99% of it, but it was enjoyable enough? Smoke Tea Duck — Seems like a featured dish but I’d stay away. Super fatty and not as flavorful as Roast Duck. Crispy Tofu — It was in a sweet & sour sauce and it was DRENCHED in it. The tofu was crisped to perfection, which wasn’t terrible, but it was just too saucy. We ended up taking the duck & the tofu home because we were already full from the first 3 dishes. I would come back more for the ‘appetizers’ like the dumplings, noodles, etc. Interior is decent, once you’re inside, you don’t feel like you’re in a take out restaurant so I give them that. Got a fortune cookie without a fortune in it. Didn’t affect my review though, just thought it was interesting =)

Pretty good deal for pretty straight down the middle of the plate Chinese food. I don’t know if this Grand Sichuan is in cahoots with the others in the city, but it serves as a pretty nice spot for an otherwise mild Chinese food desert in the UWS. Came here with family last night after a movie. Though it was quite empty, we had to wait to be seated, and it took awhile to order drinks. Also the server tried to snatch plates away before we were finished, assuming probably that Americans always leave food on their plates because we are gluttonous and wasteful fatties? Hard to argue… We shared plates, I forget of what. I mean, I’m the guy who ordered the sesame chicken, which was good. Sauce was quite thick and sweet. The green bean greens were greasy and tasty. There was another dish of pork and smoked tofu which was REALLY smoky. Take the smokiness down a notch and it would have been excellent. What was awesome were the scallion pancakes. Dip em in soy sauce and whoa. If you have a hankering for some decent and decently priced greasy Americanized Chinese food(although I’m certain they have another, separate, authentic menu), go for it.

More things which are prepared very well: –Sautéed rice cakes(often in other places, these are often old or overdone) (this I couldn’t find on the menu, though they made it for me anyway. Not sure if it’s a menu item or not) –Spicy Tofu Skin app –Fish Fillet with Preserved Vegetables Soup

This place probably deserves a 3.5 instead of the 3 that i’m giving it. Came here for a quick lunch with my roommate since it was right in our neighborhood and we ordered 2 of their lunch specials:(1) Double Cooked Pork and(2) Beef Flat Rice Noodle(Chow Fun). Overall, the food was pretty delicious with good portion sizes but the service was a bit slow and their mochi ice cream($ 6 for 2) was way overpriced! I would definitely come back here and would very likely order their double cooked pork again. It was very flavorful(although it could use more spice) and the portions were very reasonable.

Really good dishes… Spicy and very flavorful ! However the Duck Noodle soup is hit or miss. The odds are the chef will cheap out and put the duck bits that are waste, have no meat and just gristle.

Dan Dan Noodles are highly recommended. Will try the Mao Pao tofu next time and the 8 treasurs. People need to lighten up as quite simply, this is good Sichuan food in the middle of well, the Upper West Side, which if I am not mistaken only has American-Chinese places and«Asian Fusion.» Main dishes I ordered: Had: Dan Dan Noodles with chili sauce Very good, saw a lot of tables with this after I ordered it. Excellent variant with a solid portion and a great spicyness 4.5./5 House Spicy Beef Noodle Soup 7.95 This was my main dish. The soup broth reminded me of the spicy lamb soup from Xian Famous, had a lot of star anise, brown sugar, chilli, cloves, cinammon, etc. Beef was mostly tendon but with some regular pieces, this would have been better named House Spicy Beef Tendon Noodle Soup. Portion was very good, had a bunch to take home. 4.5÷5 Otherwise Appetizers: Vegetable dumplings(steamed): Forgot the price, something between 6 and 8. Normal variant, nothing much to say, nn-skimpy filling 3.0÷5 Minced Chicken with corn soup 7.95 The normal, nothing much to say outside of it not tasting nearly as well starchy/MSG like/oily as normal) 4.0÷5(for American-Chinese soups) Main dishes: Fried Rice with shredded smoked tea duck 10.95 For fried rice, it was pretty good, good amount of tea duck but I have seen better portions otherwise. 3.75÷5, tea duck gets a 3.9 141. Moo Shu Vegetable In White Sauce 11.95 add pancakes: 2 extra pancakes 1.00 Not bad, not amazing either, nothing much to say, it is hard to add American-Chinese white sauce and have well flavor. 2.5÷5 104. Chicken with garlic sauce 12.95 Was different for a Chinese restaurant, the dish had a nice spicy kick to it, I guess expected from it being a Sichuan place. OK amount of chicken 3.0÷5 Wait staff: The guy was nice but he avoided gving me tea for ages, otherwise, he was quick. Nothing else to say outside of the usual, AAM waiter. Place: Was clean, even the bathrooms were, especially for a good Chinese restaurants. Outside of the prices, the food was delicious. for the UWS, this is highly recommended. If this was in Chinatown, I would give this a 3 or 2.5 Because the Dan Dan were quite good and well it isn’t, I’ll accept the bad prices and gve it a 3.5÷4.

Restaurants in the UWS are best appreciated in its context: when the average restaurant in the neighborhood is an overpriced Italian and/or American joint, delicious, affordable, and authentic ethnic food is a real lifesaver. The flavors here are unashamedly spicy with lots of full-bodied flavor. I tried the Sichuan wantons in red oil — it’s hard to find a Chinese dumpling with a fine, delicate wanton wrapper but this one had it. The Sichuan cold noodles was loaded with flavor, with several sauces and garnishes culminating into a delicious sauce to toss the noodles in. The Guizhou spicy chicken was really stellar. Crispy and spicy(and not stickily sweet), it’s deliciousness in every bite. They also offer brown rice, so, kudos.
