Eizan Ryu Ju Jitsu

This is an excellent place to train. I’ve studied (to one degree or another) krav maga, boxing, Shaolin kung fu, and karate thus far in my life-​and I can say that none of my experiences with any of them compare to what I’ve learned at Eizan Ryu.
The three senseis are staggeringly knowledgeable, and are able to walk the thin line between lightheartedness and seriousness, creating an atmosphere that allows one to laugh and have fun while still maintaining a level of focus I’ve yet to encounter in a dojo.
As if that weren’t enough, it is far and away the cheapest dojo I’ve found for this style of self defense, and there are four classes per week. Between the price and frequency of classes, there really is no excuse not to go once signed up.
I highly recommend this wonderful school to anyone looking to learn to defend themselves, get in shape, and learn this very solid and well-​rounded martial art!

I’ve been a student at Eizan Ryu Jujitsu for many years, and I found it to be a very special place. Training here is amazing because of the passion of the instructors for martial arts (they are not only senseis in the Eizan Ryu dojo but also students in other dojos so they keep learning) and their passion for the students. Their passion truly creates a cultural within the dojo for helping each other achieve their best in a fun and energetic environment. We mix all ranks and this allows everyone to learn not only from the sensei but also from senior students. Having been at a few dojos none have the same feeling as Eizan Ryu.

excellent! a warm and friendly group who practice Japanese style Jujitsu self defense in a beautiful dojo. Instructors are knowledgeable and passionate, lead by Shihan Maria Vandessel since 1989. A wonderful mix of jujistukas practice here, all races, sexes and a wide range of ages are represented. The style is fluid, beautiful and strongly practical… this is not a dance class, this is a set of really powerful defense techniques designed to allow the smaller or weaker person to use the strength and momentum of an attacker against them. I have tried many styles of martial arts in the last 25 years and none have impressed me as much as Eizan Ryu, both for the techniques and for the people involved

A great school to join. The teachers (Sensei) find the right balance between effectiveness & safety. In turn they transfer that onto us and we too train with that in mind.
This is most evident when watching a senior student working with a junior student. Seniors are patient and supportive. Beginners are given plenty of time to grasp an idea and few surprises. They are not in danger. *Then* while watching the same senior student work with another senior, the contrast becomes stark. Strikes are faster and stronger. Attacks are made with a sincere attempt to do damage.
The byproduct of such an approach is that new students are not hurt needlessly. Everyone can progress at their own pace. At the same time, a strong and effective martial arts style is not traded off for this safety.
