Dos Toros Taqueria

I had a concert at Irving Plaza and wanted to do a pre-​concert meal at Ichabod’s, but couldn’t get a table (not to self: make reservations, always!) Instead of just giving up and going to sidebar, I opted to find something else that would satisfy my hunger.
Que in tacos, ’cause you can’t go wrong with tacos.
When I walked in, this place looked like a Qdoba/​Chipotle copycat, only on a smaller scale. Which, I suppose is true. But that made ordering easy: there are choices of carne asada, pollo asada, carnitas on a burrito, quesadilla, or tacos. There are 3 choices of salsas — salsa verde (medium), smoky salsa, and spicy salsa). Got some tecates (a score at $ 2.75 each) to go with my meal.
Carnitas burrito and carne asada quesadilla were delicious. I hate the ends of burritos usually because there is never enough burrito filling, but this burrito I enjoyed until the last bite. The quesadilla was crispy on the outside (yum) but it was served wrapped in foil though, kind of like a roll instead of flat like normal, but I’m guessing that’s because they don’t have platters big enough to hold them. I really liked the smoky salsa paired with the salsa verde… it gave the food items a nice touch. Cons: the guacamole could have used a bit more salt and the chips were salted unevenly, so shake the chips bag before you go to town on them.
As other Unilocalers have mentioned — it is a small spot, so be prepared to just take food to go.

This is like a slightly hipster version of chipotle.
Price is an advantage, it’s an affordable place. Location too is an advantage.
Food is ok! At least is fresh.
Would go back on weekday in between errands or for a quick bite at lunch or after hours.

Fast, delicious and friendly service. Small location so seating is a bitch but it’s worth it. Just take it to go and eat it at Union Square Park!

This place was super awesome. The wooden (and not plastic or metal) furniture made it a bit more comfy than I was expecting for a hole-​in-​the wall place. Their food and service was top notch. Super cool and friendly. My date and I loved it. It was the perfect place to fill up right before catching a movie across the street. :)

Very fantastic Mexican food. Think Chipotle but authentic. The food was good and there was some space to sit. I got the bowl and it was fantastic and hard to finish. The food was very fresh and the workers were very kind.

Still not bad, but over the past few years, I’ve noticed that they are very skimpy on their guac now. You can barely get a few bites of it in when you get a bowl because there are so many other heavier toppings. I also don’t love the fact that you start your order before you get to the front of the line. Maybe it’s just me, but I personally like watching every part of my food being made. Usually, it’s out of vision until you get to the extra toppings, so if a mistake was made, you either have to deal with it or you feel like an asshole for making the people redo half your meal.

Can’t say that I’m any more impressed with this place than a really really good day at Chipotle.
My sister and I were on a burrito tour in NYC, because she really really really loves burritos and this was our last stop. At this point in the late afternoon, we had already had 2 other far superior burritos. All other things equal, I really just wasn’t impressed. Pretty much all the same options as Chipotle, sustainably raised meat and poultry, rice, beans, fajita veggies, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, yada yada. It was good but nothing special.
Maybe I’ll come back when I haven’t been eating Mexican all day… maybe I won’t.

Why why why are burritos, quesadillas so wet all the time? Argh.
Food is good, service is good but sure would be nice if they are served dry and not soaking wet all the time.

Um… yeah. This location is VERY small. It is a hole in the wall.
They’re pretty reminiscent of Chipotle. You know the same ol’ Frijoles negros, frijoles pintos, fajitas vegetables, shredded cheese, grilled chicken, guacamole, chips, salsa etc.
The first thing I noticed was that they’re only a tad bit cheaper than Chipotle. It’s all the exact same thing in my opinion. The line was quite long. I noticed that I was able to order and while I was ordering, someone tapped my foot. I was a bit taken aback by it but when I looked down, there was an employee trying to get out of the kitchen from under the counter… that’s how small it was.
Anyway, I ordered the chicken burrito. I added both black and pinto beans. The rice was added, the chicken, the fajita vegetables, the hot sauce and I believe the cheese was added too. I also tried the chips with fresh tomato salsa. It was pretty good. I’d say the salsa was freshly made, but it had a little too much vinegar.
I only like the fact that the rice was flavorful but I would not say they’re better than Chipotle. Not even by a landslide. If you’re a Mexican food connoisseur (which I’m not actually) then you’ll probably like the food here. If you’re just into Mexican fast food and interested in a burrito, go to Chipotle instead. They’re much better and their restaurants are big enough for seating and long lines.

I love a taco.
A taco is up there with the top options for any group meal. They’re fun. They’re tasty. They’re spicy, and they’re shareable.
So, apart from the lack of real seating here (not an issue, a group of three of us managed to sit) — this is the best I’ve had.
It’s busy. Very busy. It’s easy to see why, with low prices for food, lots of vegetarian and meat eating options, and even a nice selection of bottled beers.
The spice rating is accurate. The hot sauce took my face clean off, and the milder ones spiced things up perfectly.

Price was around $ 45 all in. But we did have a couple each. You could easily eat here for $ 10pp.

It’s sister restaurant is next door too. An Indian themed street food bash. Shall definitely hit that up next time.

I was going to try a Ramen place for dinner but they were too crowded so I was walking along a saw Dos Toros. I went in and hoped that I would get a seat as this place is small and they have a steady stream of people ordering food. I decided to a get two tacos – one basic and one with carnitas. I also got the medium hot sauce. The lady making my tacos was pleasant but the young lady cashing out could have been a bit nicer. Also, she never bothered to ask if I want my receipt, which I did (I like to keep track of my spending when using my debit card). I had to ask while she was already cashing out other customers.
Anyway, I was able to grab a seat and enjoy these yummy tacos. I see why vegetarians go nuts for this place; the Basic taco was really good. They put rice, beans (either pinto or black – I got the black beans) and peppers. Also, you can get guacamole for a little extra. My carnitas taco was a tad bit too salty but still very good. The carnitas here are a 100x better than chipotle carnitas. They have beer but who needs beer when they have Boylan seltzer water?! I came in on the Monday after thanksgiving at around 7:00 p.m. and it was crowded so it’s safe to say that they are busy no matter what day of the week it is. Next time I’m home, I’ll have to try the one of their bowls.

I went to the one on West 12^th last time and it tasted a lot better. This one seemed so dry, but because I added guap (1 $ extra) it tasted a lot better. The chicken on the chicken quesadilla smells great though, BUT it is so small, and was 10 $. That’s quite pricey for something that is so small and not much substance (just a wrap for the skin, some chicken and cheese) and I feel like Chipotle would have been «more worth» because broke college kid. But I was craving it for so long so after gym I went to get it. I was disappointed, not only because it was pricey side but the chicken was hard and not soft and tender the way I like it.
Service was fine, there wasn’t much of a line around Tuesday 5pm.

The gold standard for burritos. I’ve only been to Chipotle once in my life, because l live near Dos Toros.
The ingredients are good quality, and their 3 homemade hot sauces are great. Be aware the extra-​hot is ~really~ hot.
It’s tiny, so if you have someplace to go eat your burrito, go there.
One question though: they don’t deliver, so if I have to walk over there, stand in line to order, then carry my food home, why do they have a tip jar? What are we tipping them for, not spitting in the food? Sorry if I sound like a grumpy old man, but tipping is for waitstaff, and they don’t have any. They do have great burritos, though.

Location: small mexican place is never gonna missed by me. And with 1000+ people agree with the idea that this place is worth 4 stars, I have to give it a try. The decoration is really limited, I mean, this place only has a small counter for food and cashier, 4 tables to dine in. No tip charges. I was in a short line on a Sunday night. The line was extremely fast and by the time I decided what I want, I already was about to be served.
Food: they have tacos, burritos, plates/​salad, and… something else. I was in a mood of veggies, so I chose chicken salad, — a salad with rice, beans, lettuces, tomatoes, salsa, chicken. Pretty delicious and fresh, in my opinion! And huge portion too.
Price: It is popular, also because I guess it’s cheap. A salad is only 9 dollars at Union Square? What a deal!
I wished I could be here all day long and try all their foods.
Overall: 4 stars for the freshness and cheapness

Like a friendlier staffed, more stuffed burrito version of Chipotle. That’s no knock on Chipotle though, Dos Toros truly knocks it out of the park on both of these fronts! The staff was super helpful with all my questions about the menu, and once I mentioned that it was my first time, they said it would hurt at first but that I would learn to love it… NO what they actually said was free guacamole for first timers! In continuing with my Chipotle comparison, my burrito also looked more stuffed than its Chipotle counterpart. It seems like this is more a result of the quantity of each ingredient provided rather than a larger array of ingredients (essentially, add-​ons are almost identical to Chipotle).
In terms of ingredients, what sets Dos Toros apart is their yellow rice, which is just overall tastier than Chipotle and the cheese they melt onto each burrito prior. However, I will say that Chipotle does have tastier sauces than this establishment, so keep that in mind as well.
Overall, a definite recommend. A little expensive to go all the time at $ 10 a burrito but definitely worth the occasional chow down.

Way less attitude, way faster service, way shorter lines than Chipotle. The food is good, pretty similar to Chipotle. Their salsa is pretty spicy but also really good.
Support a smaller business and walk two minutes here from Chipotle.

Decent for New York!
As a native southern Californian and having lived in San Diego for four years during college, I had the privilege of having some of the most amazing Mexican food, ranging from carne asade fries, amazing guac, and burritos galore! You can probably understand why my cravings for Mexican food were pretty high on this particular day when I vowed I would find a decent place despite rumors that there are none in New York.
I decided to stop by here after researching on Unilocal for a bit, as the reviews seemed decent. The location is really nice, right next to Union Station park and near a bunch of shopping stores, such as Best Buy, Nordstrom Rack. It’s a little hidden, as the restaurant itself is quite small. But, such a relief once you find it!
The décor looks very similar to a small chipotle, but the kitchen is in the back after you order items from their simple menu. I ordered the carne asada burrito (around $ 8.95-the prices went up!), and it came fairly fast. I really liked the meat in my burrito as well as the tortilla, but I felt the balance of meat, veggies, and beans could have more… balanced. It was alright, but far from amazing. I would recommend this for any Mexican cravings, but if you’re a southern California native, relax a little and be appreciative of the fact that New York tried.

Save your money and time and just go to Chipotle! It’s almost 5dls a taco! Food is a bit more authentic but way overpriced with huge attitudes!
I asked for cilantro and got a mayor attitude from the «manager»! Seriously? They don’t take their time to get your order right, they just want you to pay and get out! Disgusting! Awful!

The service was hands down amazing. They were accommodating. I has the carne asade burrito and that was delicious. It was my first time here. I asked for extra salsa’s on the side to give them ALL a try. I had the green Verde one and that was OMG HOTT. The guacamole was delicious. The red salsa was outstanding flavors. I’m sorry but I like this hole in the wall spot vs the chipotle. (I know it’s a chain). I went to the Brookfield the following week. I got the quesadilla and it was way to small for 10 bucks. I’ll stick with the burrito.
That’s my option… (don’t hate).
One thing I will say was the flour tortilla. it was stuck in my teeth when eating it, which if I wasn’t at work and on the go I wouldn’t be able to ensure its not stuck in my teeth. I love to smile, so that would be a little weird looking with me walking around with tortilla stuck in my teeth. HA

Fresh and quality Mexican food. I make it a point to visit this place every time I’m in the city, once every few weeks.
What I like here:
— Food is always fresh and tastes great
— flavors are right on the spot
— those sauces do add some kick with their heat and spice
Small place and can get very crowded during lunch/​busy hours.

If Dos Toros had al pastor as a meat choice and was slightly greasier, it would start to rival the best tacqueria in the whole world, EL FAROLITO IN SAN FRANCISCO.
Alas, Dos Toros does not have al pastor and is missing some grease, but I still appreciate a tasty, healthier, but still authentic Mission-​style burrito. I appreciated it so much this weekend, in fact, that I had two Dos Toros burritos in three days.
It ain’t no El Farolito, but I’m glad that I’ve found an acceptable replacement for my burrito cravings in NYC.

For $ 4, the chicken taco spilleth over with abundant filling — juicy and flavorful. Service was easygoing and accommodating; we didn’t order a drink and the cashier thoughtfully offered us a cup for water. I’ve adjusted my expectations of Mexican food since moving to New York and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one of the best taco places in the city.

I like Dos Toros. Sometimes I even crave Dos Toros. But I really don’t think I love Dos Toros. I’m from Denver, the hometown of Chipotle, so it’s hard for me to not go to Chipotle when I get a craving for burritos in NYC, but really, Dos Toros is far better than Chipotle… in New York anyways.
I love the carne asada burritos, they do something really unique by melting a slice of cheese onto the tortilla before building the burrito. The result is a far melty-​er cheese experience, something I really love. I also love that you can get guacamole on your burrito for only $ 0.92. Yes. 92 cents. And it’s good guac too. I also like the hot sauce, but it’s really unpredictable. Sometimes it’s perfectly spicy and sometimes it’s so hot you can’t finish your burrito (and I LOVE spicy food…) so I stopped getting it, but then the burritos aren’t spicy enough.
The servers are usually pretty nice, and they actually seem to be enjoying what they’re doing most of the time, unlike at Chipotle.
