The Crown and Anchor English Pub

The Crown and Anchor is an authentic, family-​style pub. And by family-​style, I mean when you walk in you’re family. Military friendly. Neighborhood friendly. Out-​of-​towner friendly. Just friendly dammit. My favorite place to visit when I visit.

I love the Crown&Anchor. Kevin J. Is one of the best bartenders ever. Love going across the river to visit this place.

Decent place. It was dead when we went. Had one beer and I had a beefeater and tonic, with the local tonic. So glad the bartender mentioned it. So oooo tasty. Bartender was decent. Seems like a cool place to go with friends.

Cool place, having lived in England for 3 years I rarely see true English pubs in America. Many places have Irish pubs but believe me they’re different. This place is cool good draft list beers are $ 6 or less for a 20oz pint. Definitely worth the ferry ride over sit outside of the weather is nice.

If a decent local pub is what you’re looking for, then a decent local pub is what you shall find at the Crown and Anchor Pub. Nothing fancy about this place, but it’s a great place to meet nice locals and enjoy a beer! They allow dogs inside (and give them biscuits!) and also serve several types of cider. Mixed drinks or snacks are not high points here, so don’t come hungry or expecting anything fancy.

We came into town to visit family and friends… oh and it also happened to be Mardi Gras. A friend of ours that is a local mentioned the Crown and Anchor knowing my beau is a Whovian. What is there to say? We loved this little «hole in the wall» if you will. My entire life my mom was a gin fan… I was not. Well that’s changed. If you have the chance partake in their proper G&T. It’s amazing! I promptly ordered the Tonic syrup they use (made locally in L.A. by El Guapo) and picked up a bottle of Hendricks when we got back to Maryland. We will be back!

Nice dive bar. Had a wonderful green drink. Can’t remember the name but something lemonade. On the small bar menu. NO FOOD! Glad to have found something open on a Sunday after a short ferry ride.

Nice British pub in a nice quiet neighborhood. very relaxing on a Wednesday afternoon. There was even a local cat who wandered over to sit with us.

Enter through the Tardis; keep watch for Daleks.
Great spot to down a pint or two while watching Champions League football.

As far as neighborhood bars go, this spot really cant be beat. You might get some side eye from the regulars here, bc they are fiercely loyal and protective of their bar. English pub style, it even features a blue telephone both (Tardis for you Dr. Who Fans) as the entrance to the pub. The atmosphere inside is tiny, but cozy and welcoming. Bar staff is friendly, and being tucked away on the Point in New Orleans means you are safe from the usually annoying crowds, including but not limited to the droves of college students moving obnoxiously in herds. Conveniently located about a block from the ferry!

I LOVE this bar… fortunately for me some north LA friends were coming to NOLA and since I was too busy to get rooms booked I let them handle it and we ended up on the West Bank (I really need to quit letting my friends from north LA book rooms)…but hey life hands you lemons etc…
Perfect excuse to take advantage of this great neighborhood bar in Algiers (which I probably would never have gotten to but for this happy accident)…from entering through the Police Box, to the intimate, cozy and laid back vibe all worthy of giving this bar a «4» star rating… BUT what puts a place over the top into «5» star territory, you ask… for this place the fact that it carries Guinness AND Harp on tap puts it in that rarefied air!
Any bar where you can get a Half & Half is a place that I LOVE… if you’re in NOLA don’t sleep on this place… catch that ferry at Canal Street for 2 $, jump off in Algiers and soak in the atmosphere of this joint along with several reasonably priced pints!

If you live in the neighborhood you might like the place because is laid back (i.e. empty like a dozen people there on a weekend Friday/​Saturday night.) It is a small inside pub, that is very much decorated like a British Pub. There were like about a dozen friendly people there. There is a big outdoor area that looks like it could be a great spot; however it wasn’t open as there were hardly enough patrons to bother. The reason why this place is suffering is the drinks are over priced. Also the bartender has to use a jigger, and in New Orleans that is a kiss of death– might as well close up shop if you are that stingy in a booze town. Also we were sitting at the bar and the bartender had two clear unrefrigerated containers one of lemon wedges and one of limes. The limes were brown like not brownish, BUT disgustingly brown. This was nasty like bleecky WTF nasty like rotten fruit. Also no food served.
The Crown and Anchor English Pub is a neighborhood bar without that many neighbors hanging out. On a Friday night you could even go there alone to have a table to yourself for your labtop. $ 6 for a draft, $ 5 for a domestic,$ 3.5 for a bottle premium priced mixed drinks with like 1 ounce of booze*. People who drink and go there are people who want to go to someplace near that is near empty near all the time.
After going here it is a disappointment because the bar could be a gold mine except for the owners/​managers must be pathologically stingy, so much so that the best thing that could be said is that it is one of the most empty bars you are likely to find in or around New Orleans.
PS In retrospect I should have taken a picture of the limes. FYI I have worked at the Horse Brass and The Tardis Room in Portland Oregon, both very British styled pubs, so I had to check this place out, and have to sadly say I had high hopes after reading the other reviews, and was sorely disappointed.

Its a small pub in algiers. Pretty quiet when we went. Two adorable pups run the place, they are too sweet. Service is very nice. Cute area.

I have liked this place for a long time but due to the smoke, I was unable to go inside too often. But now, it’s great. The people are very friendly and even introverts like myself end up getting into conversations despite ourselves.
The only caveat is the prices. The import some amazing beers but at 15 bucks for a round (with tip) it’s hard to spend much time in there on our budget. If anyone wants to treat me to 1 – 7 Fuller’s London Porters, then I’d be happy to go.
They no longer do pub quizzes every week but when they do have them, they can email you so you don’t miss it.
All they need now is a kitchen putting out fish and chips and some lovely shephards pie.

As far as I can tell there is nothing for tourists on Algiers Point, except a bike trail. We went over for a quick ferry ride and walk. This place was a perfect place to sit down for a drink. They have 3 picnic tables outside.

I love this place. As an Algiers Point resident, it’s not just a pub, it a place full of friends and community. The owners are always going out of their way to make the place feel like home. They have sponsored community fundraisers, potlucks and other fun events. For a tourist, it’s a great way to experience the eclectic charm of this totally unique New Orleans neighborhood.
Oh and of course the beer selection is awesome as well as the special NOLA Cask beer that is held the first Friday of each month. Definitely worth a ferry ride over to Algiers Point.
On a side note, I am always impressed with the cleanliness of the women’s bathroom. It always smells like mints and is very clean.

Awesome little neighborhood bar that gladly welcomes tourists. Very friendly and quaint and there is a TARDIS that you go through to enter. For you Dr Who fans this is a must go to place.

This is a locals bar that regularly welcomes tourists. It’s a perfect location along the levee and within eyesight of the ferry.
Yes, there’s smoke. But you can sit outside. Dogs allowed and welcomed with open arms, there are milkbones behind the bar, and a water bowl somewhere on the floor.
The décor is spot on, and the entrance looks like the Tardis. So really why not come here.

Can you possibly get more British in New Orleans than to have a pub which you must first pass through the Tardis doors before you can enter? I’ve never seen anything like this. And guess what — the place was mysteriously much bigger on the inside than it was on the outside.
Inside was about as typical of an english pub that I have ever seen. I would have sworn I was in England if not for the fact that my bartender didn’t have an english accent. She was awesome by the way — we sat and talked about Doctor Who for about half-​n-​hour while I drank my London Porter draft.
I was happy to hear that this pub hosts Doctor Who parties and that the place had apparently been packed the night before for a party to watch the 2014 Doctor Christmas Special. If I had only known, I would have made my way to Algiers to participate.
So if you happen to find yourself in Algiers — and I completely recommend that you take the trip on the ferry over from the French Quarter waterfront (its a mere 5 minute ferry ride and only costs $ 2.00) that you stop in the Crown and Anchor. Grab a pint — get some Walkers Crips, and enjoy yourself. You won’t regret this little slice of Britain so far away from the motherland.

Polite, clean and inexpensive. Worth a ferry ride.
