History

Established in 1993.

It was Halloween of 1993 when the re-imagined BLB opened. The building that houses the BLB was built in 1926 when Lake Street was the edge of town. It was originally a Ford garage and serviced Model Ts at the time. It was converted to a bowling alley in 1936, and in 1959 was bought by the previous owner, Minnesota Bowling Hall of Famer Bill Drouches, who installed the automatic pinsetters that year – the ones we use today.

The BLB was restored as closely as possible to its original splendor, and the video/pool hall was turned into a 90-seat cabaret theater. The establishment quickly became both a busy neighborhood hang out as well as a destination for travelers and celebrations of all sorts.

A great beer and wine selection, food made with heart & locally farmed sustainable ingredients, and an atmosphere that welcomes everyone seems to be the magical fountain of youth. Although 20 years old, BLB maintains its reigning champion status as a humble neighborhood hotspot.

Meet the Business Owner

Kim B.

Business Owner

Kim attended the University of Minnesota for way too long, and then opened Café Wyrd on Lake & Irving in Uptown in 1991 after having vowed to never work in a restaurant again. She still has yet had to don a cook’s uniform, so it’s sort of working out. She re-imagined the Bryant Lake Bowl in 1993 with the help of Danny Schmidtz, who created the BLB Theater. Café Wyrd was transformed into a brasserie, Barbette, in 2001 and has won several awards for its food, wine, and ambiance. In Nov. of 2007, Kim opened Minnesota’s first LEED-CI certified restaurant, the Red Stag Supperclub, in an old warehouse in NE Minneapolis. Since then, she has opened Pat’s Tap, Bread & Pickle, and, most recently, Tiny Diner in the Powderhorn neighborhood of Minneapolis. Kim’s businesses are all committed to serving sustainably farmed and sourced foods as much as possible and exploring the vision of a world where restaurants are people and planet– positive and not just for profit.
