I get it. This store is in the nice part of Jersey City. You can see NYC from the sidewalk. You shouldn’t come in here expecting to pay dollar store prices.
I’ve been in here a few times, and the only thing I’ve found that is remotely reasonably priced is their bottled water. Today, I stared down a small clamshell of strawberries that was nearly $ 8.50. Their bakery stand contains items (like muffins) that can be anywhere from small to overflowing out of the muffin tin, yet they are all the same price. Their worst offender, in my opinion, is their salad bar/​hot food area.
I used to work in a grocery store, and you aren’t going to get the Gordon Ramsay dining experience. But at least my store had some quality control. I wanted to get a salad but your only options were to choose from two different types of lettuce, and then a few scattered mixed food items (like chicken mixed with other ingredients, fruit salad, ect). There wasn’t an actual selection available for salad toppings. I decided on the hot food section, and went with a «beef and onions» option, vegetables in butter, and a grilled mixed vegetable combination.
I will pay this store to never make any of those items again. The «vegetables in butter» were literally swimming in butter in the metal serving tray, and I tried to choose vegetables that were closer to the heat lamp and more dry; it didn’t help. The grilled mixed vegetables were tossed with a spice combination that should never see the light of day ever again. The beef was extremely dry, and tasteless. At one point, my dining companion asked me if I was okay; I was apparently giving off a disgusted facial expression; because the combination of spices on the vegetables hit my taste buds all at once, and I was contemplating every life decision that got me to that table. For $ 7.99/lb, you would think that the store would have some semblance of quality for their product.
This place isn’t worth it, unless you’re in a rush and need an item or two to finish off dinner; or, if you have an expansive bank account to pay for their markup.

Expensive, yes, but convenient for when I’m making dinner and forgot a last-​minute ingredient and don’t want to head to ShopRite or ACME (formerly A&P). That said, they do have things that are worth buying per se. They have a good cheese selection with several varieties on sale every week, and a diverse array of international foods. There’s plenty of East and South Asian goods, though more expensive than Chinatown or Journal Square of course. Their European goods, however, are actually quite nice because 1) they’re hard to find in the first place; 2) there’s no ethnic supermarkets for them; and 3) the small ethnic shops in NYC that do sell them are just as expensive if not more so. Case in point: I love British biscuits. I can get a roll of McVitie’s Digestives for only $ 2.35 in Chinatown, but HobNobs aren’t as readily available. Costing $ 5 at both of the two British shops in West Village, they’re just $ 3.50 here.
Overall though, everything is just more expensive here. Often they sell ShopRite-​branded goods at a markup compared to ShopRite itself. Their «sale» prices for meat and produce often end up being the same as regular price at ShopRite.

This is the closest grocery store which is a plus but the food mostly is expired. I was looking for Indian pickle and every single bottle was expired. I picked coconut water and every one of it was expired. However, I have not had any problems with the expiry date of day to day groceries like milk.

I got prawns yesterday and today they smelled SO horrible that I had to throw them out. They have expired biscottis on the front shelf. I even bought expired goat cheese one time from here. I’m scared to go here again!

Unfortunately this store is a huge disappointment. Produce is not fresh and it is extremely overpriced. I wish there was a whole foods in New port area. I gladly pay the prices for good quality and fresh food.
Also the service is lacking. So sad.

Terrible. I have thrown out countless items because it was rotted or expired. Their fruit and vegetables are rotten on the shelves. You have to dig through to find anything somewhat fresh. I just threw out today a box of morningstar farms veggie burgers that I bought last week. They were expired from Jun 2014. WHY ARE YOU SELLING SOMETHING THAT EXPIRED A YEAR AGO? They are stocked with the same food as the Shoprite yet charge more money (I have seen the Shoprite truck pull right into this place). I wish trader joes or whole foods would open up here so this place would close down. The only thing this place has going for it are the bagels which come from a place in Staten Island. The bakery is decent, but I am not a fan of the rat that likes to run around there. Avoid at all costs.

Everything you’ve read about expiration dates here is true. I bought yogurt here and it was expired. Not newly expired. Two weeks expired. Really disappointing since I try to avoid Shoprite on Marin because of the crowds.

I’ve shopped at innumerable food markets throughout my life and I have NEVER experienced one as atrociously managed as the Jersey City Morton Williams, which is all the more unacceptable given the offensively expensive prices, much more than anywhere else in the county and the New York Tristate Area.
I constantly come across expired food items of all kinds, some with expiration dates as far back as 2013, which is criminally obscene. A whole shelf of expired cartons of soy milk was one of many transgressions I’ve seen. I’ve reported such outrageous findings to management. They profess regret but nothing ever changes.
And there is clearly something awry with how they store foods because even products within their expiration dates have been «off», not fresh at all.
It’s impossible to fathom the cause for such a thankfully rare (touch wood) dereliction of duty. Could they be taking advantage of the majority of foreign residents in Newport who are disinclined toward a healthy spirit of protest because they are so transient and largely come from cultures that discourage such self-​expression?
This store is insidious; it’s like being in a corrupt third world country where presentation is sterile and pretty but the operations are upside down, jepardinzing to one’s physical well being and peace of mind.

The bakery is great! What’s awesome is that they had all of the ingredients to create this «tapas»

I just opened one of the items I purchased YESTERDAY and it was expired. Chestnuts that now look like cotton and putrefaction because apparently these people never rotate their inventory. I will not be surprised if some of the other products I bought are also expired. I’m afraid I’ll get food poisoning if I eat any of the food I purchased. I will never return to this place.

Completely horrible. They charge $ 47.99 for a Brita filter that is $ 19.99 at Bed Bath and Beyond. I understand a few dollars more but that’s twice the price! And it wasn’t even clearly marked. They had no price on the shelf and there was a hidden little sticker off to the side.
Also, believe the reviews that talk about the cashiers changing the price. I bought some flowers that had a sticker for $ 7.99. The cashier muttered something and quickly changed it to $ 8.99 and then proceeded to scribble out the $ 7.99 price in front of me. Like I wasn’t right there.
Avoid this place if possible.

This is a great boutique specialty supermarket, located conveniently in Newport (right next to my son’s school), so I frequent it a lot. They have food from every region & country & sell everything from fresh bakery items (rolls, pastries, bagels, specialty cakes, desserts), to a hot food bar, to made-​to-​order sandwiches & fresh sushi. They have tons of items from various countries, including entrees & snacks from Italy, India, Sweden, Israel, Japan, China, etc.
The cashiers are young & some have attitudes that leave a bit to be desired, but there is always a manager on site if you have an issue. The sandwich guys & the bakery guy (I wish I knew his name, he’s the older good looking gentleman who is always so friendly & personable) are great.
While the prices are a bit high, it is the only decent supermarket in the area & has free parking with any $ 10 purchase.
PS There’s a nice wine shop right next door, for your one-​stop shopping needs :)

It’s extremely pricey but if you are living in the newport area and bored to walk to shoprite… This place has everything

This store overprices food to the point where buying at Wholefoods feels like a bargain. And not only is everything overpriced, but also lacking in quality. The vegetables are okay, but I don’t even dare buy meat from here. Also beware of expiration dates, just yesterday I bought yogurt that expired that same day.
An example of how ridiculous the prices are: they charged me $ 12 for 5 tomatoes, as if tomatoes cost $ 2.40 each! Not even the farmer’s market organic tomatoes would cost me that much… c’mon!
But honestly, as residents of the nearby area, the only way we can really protest these prices is by not buying here. And that is what I plan to do. I WILL NEVER step foot here again.

I just spend almost 8 bucks for a dozen eggs. I could not find the price tag there so i just grab a dozen of eggs in the very end of shelf. it turns out to be some organic cage-​free eggs. come on! 7.69 bucks for eggs?! ridiculous price. I bet this won’t even happen in whole foods.

oh, btw, their vegetables/​fruit get rotten (bad) very fast also. Even walmart has higher quality than this.

The frequent overcharges cannot be accidental. I don’t see how the cashiers are profiting from this so maybe it’s just for fun. It’s not like the actual prices are great bargains. I need to remember that a 15-​minute walk to another store isn’t so unbearable.

I have been very happy with Morton Williams. They are incredibly clean, neat, and well organized. Their produce is very nice, and their selections of cheeses is fantastic. They are more pricey than some of the other supermarkets, but you are paying for convenience. If I am planning to do my weekly shopping, I would go to one of the other chains, but in a pinch, they are great.

Clean. Super convenient (for Newport). Great variety of Asian foods.
But… pricey, very pricey. And no service.

Morton Williams — generally overpriced supermarket for American grocery food (they sell the same store-​brand items as Shoprite … except with a 50% price markup), surprisingly decent selection of ethnic items (combination of high Indian/​South Korean population in the Newport area + general lowering of standards).
I doubt most folks come here for serious grocery shopping needs (there’s a Shoprite, A&P, and even Target within walking distance), but if you live in the Newport apartment towers, and you either need an ingredient in a pinch OR you just want a quick snack, this place is there for you, ready to take your willpower-​drained money.
Pro-​tip: Morton Williams is open until midnight every day. It experiences its highest traffic from 10 PM — midnight — when the other few dining options in the Newport area close. Sunday nights between 10 PM and midnight, when the otherwise 24-​hour Duane Reade across the street closes at 10 PM, are particularly busy times.

For sure, I won’t be going back to ShopRite again now that I have discovered this market. Clean, bright, fancy, high-​end. Wow, what a difference. I also don’t feel like someone is about to knock me on the head as I walk back to the hotel with my groceries.
Possibly the only down-​side is that their shopping carts are for inside the store only. Since I’m only getting a bag or two at a time, this isn’t an issue for me. But if you’re thinking about a big shop, you’ll need to get your own.
