Freshly baked French artisan breads, flaky croissants and chocolate croissants (chocopains!), our specialty the Petit Kouign in various flavors and our delicious seasonal fruit tarts. Many gluten free options are also available.

History

Established in 2013.

Choc O Pain French Bakery and Café was first open in Hoboken in 2012, a year later we were lucky to find a great space in Jersey City and we opened in March 2013.

I come here for the quiche! Every type is rich and satisfying! The owner is French I believe and I just like the homemade taste. There are a few tables inside for eating with a friend or you can take your items to go.

What a lovely little French bakery to happen upon in JC! All I had was a plain croissant and a soy cappuccino, but they were seriously perfect. NO complaints and such a pleasant environment and really nice people working there. Would go back any time.

I absolutely LoVe the food and drinks from this authentic French bakery. Their sandwiches are great! The coffee and tea is always on point! And the soups are always vegan, and delicious! The reason I took one star away is that there are a number of employees and managers that rude and should not be in food service. This doesn’t stop me from coming back, just because of the quality of the food, and it’s a café, so they aren’t waiting on you for that long, but they should really talk to their employees about being nicer to customers

Recently returned from France, and it’s like the vacation never ended. (OK, it did… but). We’re here a few times a week for baguettes (crunchy, chewy, incredible flavor), croissants, and macrons (they’re imported from Manhattan but who cares).

On a rainy Sunday morning in Jersey City with a friend, before 9 am, found this delightful French café with a strong machiatto, just the way I like it. I have to have quiche, especially if it appears unique to the location…3 mushroom quiche was pretty good. And the mushrooms were of quality and tasted aged and wasn’t overpowered by cheese but subtle, and the quiche wasn’t overcooked but soft, moist and tender, and crust was cooked well… not over cooked. My friend got a normal coffee, and if you like a passive normal cup of coffee probably not for you. This is LaColombe coffee and it is robust and strong. Choc O Pain is a Cozy location, not alot of seating available,.but look forward to trying their pastries in future.

This is a neighborhood favorite, but not for me. Choc O Pain styles itself as a full on Parisian boulangerie, this it is not.
Frankly it’s the baked goods. Sorry Choc O Pain, while I can’t say I’ve gotten a stale croissant from you I’ve gotten lifeless uninspiring fair. Truth be told, I’ve gotten comparable croissants at Starbucks, yikes… Maybe this place was better when it first opened up and is riding on good the graces of being one of the first bakery/​coffee shops in the area, but there are a lot of options now and Choc O Pain doesn’t stack up.
The coffee is passable to good, but you can find better in the neighborhood for the same price.

I can’t express in words how grateful I am that this perfect little French bakery exists in Jersey City. I know I can always go there for:
— a perfect little blueberry financier
— a perfect apricot tart (just look at it! pictured below)
— a perfect petit kouign (apple and caramel are my favorite)
— a perfect, sticky loaf of banana bread
— a perfect round of bread with weird graphics powdered onto it (on the 4th of July it was the American flag, which was a hit at a party)
Pros: Kid-​friendly with little mini kid seats!
Cons: Not enough big person seating, less-​than-​perfect coffee, getting crowded on weekends whenever Wonder Bagels blows up

I enjoyed grabbing a chocolate almond croissant and a latte at this small 12-​seat café. The croissant was amazing – definitely worth the walk – and the latte was above average.
It was busy but quiet on a Sunday afternoon. Unlike some coffee shops in the area, they still had plenty of baked goods for sale at midday. The prices are fair (about $ 8 for both items), and the staff is nice.

I stop in every once in a while for a treat. This past Monday I was actually intending to go to another café in the area for quiche, which I had once before and was delicious. That place had no quiche :-(Still in the mood for quiche, I figured a little French café would have it… sure did! And it was good. I’ve had their coffee and croissants and other baked goods. All are good. I wouldn’t say best ever, but I have to rank Choc-​O-​Pain above the other place for having consistently good selection, and I already gave the other place 4 stars, so while that place left me underwhelmed and empty without quiche, I will give Cho-​O-​Pain 5 stars rather than derate the other place to 3 stars…

Has really good coffee. I wish it were a little larger so that I can come and study, but it’s a nice little spot otherwise. I haven’t had any of their baked goods, but everything looks amazing. Had the macaroons here once and they were pretty average. The people are nice.

This is such a cute little pastry shop… I cant believe I’ve never stopped by before! I got a large coffee and chocolate croissant and both were excellent. So delicious! And there’s no credit card min.
There’s a few tables inside but also a couple of tables for seating outdoors. I’ll definitely be stopping by for breakfast more often!

Came here twice and both times annoyed me. The first was a cold Sunday in October. I get it, this place is popular… But they ran out of croissants (every kind) and had a few random breads, two slices of quiche and some ugly left over looking desserts. I get that this is a great problem to have, clearly people love their stuff and they’re selling a lot, but the presentation of what they had left was completely unappetizing. I was definitely disappointed, especially because I was so excited to take me dad to have his favorite, a chocolate croissant.
The second time was worse. They were out of the blood orange juice. When I asked for ice in my regular orange juice, the barista matter of factly told me «well we don’t usually put ice in juice.» Look sir, I’m sick and nauseous as hell… I don’t think having some ice in my juice a major/​unreasonable request. I ordered the egg ricotta sandwich but ended throwing it out cause it was flavorless and rubbery. I just ate a Demi baguette with strawberry preserves and butter– which was quite tasty.

2 stars given just for the the ambience and the friendly staff. Deducted 3 stars for the most horrible mocha I’ve ever had. It was like bitter hot water. Seriously. No flavor at all. Even the latte was tasteless and a disappointment. Had high hopes but won’t return after this disaster. This was seriously a «pain»

Their Quiches are excellent, sandwiches are fine (no chicken and real meat «normal» options, too much veggie and spicy as for me). Plain Croissants are great (don’t like chocolate one, choco there is meh) and CAPPUCCINO is just delicious. Best I ever tried in US (they do it hand made, cause they don’t have a machine for it, so ask them to make you a cap, you won’t regret it). Didn’t try all the bread they have, but I’m going too :) Great local café/​bakery over the corner, I was thrilled to discover it couple of months ago.

Jersey city has a patisserie!
Yes these croissants are going set you back a few bills! Plain, almond, chocolate ($ 3), chocolate almond everything looked so delicious, I felt like I had stepped into a bakery in Montréal or Paris.
Everything tastes really fresh and flakey.
The coffee was okay but with pastries like this who cares.
The egg, spinach and ricotta on grain sandwich was delicious as well.
They also sell fresh baked baguettes and round loafs.

Giving this place a 3.5!
Went in here for an iced coffee and it was good but had too much half and half! Lost the taste of the coffee.
Super cute place (on the smaller side but has a couple of tables) though with brick walls, and a delicious looking array of bread and pastries! Totally want to go back to try those goods! But, I wouldn’t recommend this spot for coffee.
