Metro Guard Termite & Pest Control

We have used Metro Guard termite and pest control for 15+ years. Ed has been our technician for all these years. He is very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. He keeps us informed of any problems he sees and lets us know when our next treatment is due. I highly recommend Metro Guard and Ed.

I have been a consistent, reliable and satisfied customer of Metro Guard’s for many years. However today I ran into a problem where I needed their help and they were anything but reliable in return. I don’t think I was asking for them to take some extraordinary step but rather help a long time customer in need. Instead it was as if I was calling for the first time. I think you’re better off simply looking for the best price. No differentiation here.

Called them for several issues. First, we have either termites or carpenter ants in one bedroom. Second, we have squirrels in the attic, and third, we wanted general pest control. I was told on my initial phone call that when the tech came out for general treatment, he would be able to tell me if they were carpenter ants or termites, and provide an estimate. And he would make sure to send one who also knew about wildlife removal, for the squirrels. When the tech arrived, he informed me that the general pest control was $ 55 and that it was warranted for one year. The squirrel «removal» was $ 350 for 7 – 10 days, but was NOT warranted. Okay, I can understand that. He asked about the ants or termites, and when I showed him the room, he just said, «I’m not even allowed to comment on whether I think those are ants or termites.» That was the first problem. Okay. If I can get general pest treatment, and get rid of the squirrels, I’ll be happy for now. I agree to the price, and ask if he needs me to remove stuff from under the sink. «Well, if you want to do that, I’ll go ahead and spray there.» So they don’t automatically spray under the sink — one of the most obvious places bugs come in? He walked around spraying the baseboards (as long as there was nothing in the way), and sprayed outside. Then it was on to the squirrel problem. He placed peanut butter in one trap and put it in the attic. (I had already tried that… and peanuts, and a couple of other things). Two days later, they came out to check the trap. Nothing there. «Well, I’ll put peanuts in it this time,» he said. Well, they are professionals after all. Two days later, still nothing. (and the tech was fifteen minutes late, but not a huge deal). So they put a second trap up there, and said they would be out two days later. I asked what happens if they don’t get anything after 10 days. «Well we don’t warranty that,» he says. To me, if I bring my truck in to get the brakes fixed, and you offer a warranty, if they brakes need repair within the warranty period, you will fix them. If I took my truck in and asked to get the brakes fixed, and someone said, «Well, I’ll work on them, but I can’t guarantee I can fix them,» I would go elsewhere. I get that squirrels are pretty smart, and hard to catch. But I would not have spent $ 350 for someone else to try what I had already tried. Two days later, I get a call a little after 5 (when I leave work) that the tech is running early, and can I possibly meet him at the house early, so the tech can go home at a decent hour. I work over an hour from home, and busted my tail to get there by 6, which was my designated appointment. As I arrived, he was driving off. My wife got home before me, so she was able to let him in the attic. Two days later, it was supposed to by my last check, and they would pick up the traps. They agreed to leave them there for two more days. I had (in writing on the invoice) that they were to be out at 6 on Friday to pick them up. At 6:30, I gave up, and pulled the traps down myself. So when they are going to be early, they can call and ask if I can be early so they can go home earlier. But if they are going to be late, there is no phone call at all? I was going to just set the traps outside and tell them where they were when they called. There were people across the street that I didn’t know, so I left them in the garage. But they didn’t call. TEN DAYS later, I get a call that they need to come get the traps because «something happened» when they were supposed to pick them up. And it was said like I had not been there or that it was my fault. So for $ 420-​something I got a basic half-​hearted spray for general pest control, and a total of about 15 minutes of someone putting peanut butter and peanuts in a trap in my attic. I would look elsewhere. At the VERY least, ask lots of questions, and understand what you are and are NOT getting.

I called these guys out for what I thought was a termite problem-​we had some swarming bugs in our dining room. They came out and did an inspection-​if you call an inspection casually walking from room to room waiting for a termite to bite you in the a**. We were told that we didn’t have termites but that we did have carpenter ants. So they sold us their Control Plus package for $ 486.91 for the year, with them coming out quarterly. I thought they did a good job on that initial visit, thoroughly spraying inside and out and fogging the attic. The next time they came out they said we had termites, based on a small trail (maybe ¼ inch) found in a bathroom. They tried to sell us on a $ 1200 termite treatment. I asked a lot of questions because we had actually already had this service 3 years ago, which was rather extensive, drilling into the foundation, etc. It is supposed to protect for 12 – 15 years. Upon telling him this he just seemed to BS his way through long explanations, but was really never able to show me that this was evidence of new termites beside the fact that he said there was no way he would’ve missed this during his inspection last time so it had to be new. He then finished up our scheduled treatment, but skipped the garage and the attic, complaining that he was busy. I called the office to discuss the situation, but was casually dismissed with their solution being, «well we’ll be sure a different technician comes out next time». I’m finishing out the one-​year contract because I’ve paid for it but I will not be using or recommending them in the future.

We hired these guys to come out for a general spray because they had alright reviews on Angie’s List and only charged $ 55. We also weren’t sure if we had termites or flying ants in our upstairs master bathroom and wanted to let our landlord know if there was indeed a termite problem. They were able to identify the culprit as flying ants, but their general spray didn’t help much with the bugs we had. We ended up doing it ourselves inside and out and took care of a fire ant problem in the process. I would have given them a 3 star rating if that was it. Since they sprayed, they’ve called a few times and each time they are nice enough and ask if we’re interested in having them come out again. I never even go into the above… all I get out is a «Thanks, but I don’t think so at this time…» and I get hung up on. EVERYTIME! Now if I ever want a pest service to come out again you can be sure it won’t be Metro Guard. They only want your money. They don’t really care about their customers!

We have used Metro Guard Pest for several years for termite and those general pesty-​pests. Have always been very pleased with their service. Their technicians are knowledgeable, courteous and respectful. We have quarterly treatments and an annual termite inspection. I like that they put the booties on when entering the house. In addition, the customer service reps are always polite during scheduling… and when I have to reschedule. They were even available for a phone consultation when I had something gross crawling near my house. These people know bugs… highly recommend.

Metro Guard is a great pest control service. They are always prompt, friendly and accommodating. I currently have them come out 4 times per year and I rarely ever see a bug in my house and rarely outside either. Maybe the occasional earwig but that’s about it. Whenever I do have any trouble, for example a fire ant mound popping up in the yard, or a wasp nest outside, they come right out and take care of it for me as part of my service contract. no extra charge. I highly recommend.
