History

Established in 1997.

Philip Carter Winery is proud of its rich cultural heritage. From the early years of the Colony, the Carter family was engaged in promoting and producing wines. In 1762, Charles Carter grew grapes and produced wines at Cleve Plantation on the northern neck of Virginia. He was awarded a gold medal from the Royal Society of Arts in London for his successful work in winemaking, representing the first internationally acclaimed wines produced in America.

The Philip Carter vineyard was established in 1997, and since 2008, Philip Carter Winery has sought to embody the passion and integrity of the early efforts of the Carter family by producing fine wines in Fauquier County. The winery sits on 27 acres in the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains just 60 miles west of metropolitan Washington, DC. Fine wines, educational opportunities and experiences in the arts are characteristics of Philip Carter Winery.
