Puka’s at Whole Foods Market Kahala

Puka’s is Whole Foods’ restaurant and bar. I’ve definitely become a fan over the last few months. Puka’s has a dedicated inside eating area with a bar. It’s nice except for the TVs. It’d be a great place to sit alone with one other person to see the selection of beers closer. The better option for seating is outside the main mall entrance. They have a permanent section of nice tables with cement benches and stools. While not the most comfortable, they get better with the more beers you drink.
They have a great food list and daily weekday specials. I tried the Kahuna Burger and Fish & Chips. The former was big, perfectly grilled, and made so appetizing with all the sauces and toppings. The fries were also done perfectly. The latter was big pieces of dark fish, maybe tuna, fried to perfection while still so moist. I loved the malt vinegar.
The beer/​cider list is long, with lots of local and regional micro and craft choices. They have beer flights and specials. The kitchen closes around 8:30, so it’s not a late night place.
There’s also another option for eating. On each table is a wooden block that you flip to specify full-​service or self-​serve. Using the latter, the waitstaff won’t approach you as you get your own food and drinks in the store proper. This is a great way to save money on tips, while still having a pleasant night outside.

Terrible service. It was very slow. My party was just waiting around for someone to take our order, but after a very long time, no one came.

Okay, I’ve been to Whole Foods a zillion times, but I’m probably the last local that popped into Puka’s! Well, wipe that «Hawaiian time» off my forehead because I finally fell into the Puka…
Puka: From the Hawaiian language meaning «Hole».
So yes, I finally fell into this Hole at Whole Foods — Kahala, pun possibly intended? Get it? «Hole», «Whole», «Puka»… Holy Batman! Oh nvm, sometimes I just think too much…
After a day of semi-​shenanigans I head down to Whole Foods for some organic-​ish food, but then I realize I still haven’t checked-​out that place called Puka’s at Whole Foods — Kahala! Hey, why the heck not! I loop the parking lot swerving the ginormous pot holes that might consume my vintage Triumph! Egad! I hit a Puka! Oh well, it’s close enough to Puka’s, so all is good in the world!
I walk into the «Hole» of a restaurant, but was immediately impressed with how casual cool it was. Like a pub, but not really, maybe a little G-​rated pub?! I mean with the moms, kids, and grandparentals in the area you better hella hide that pub vibe… So I decide to be a rebel with a cause and sit at the bar as all the mommies with toddlers gawk. It’s all about the Triumph, son.
I pull up a wooden stool and immediately am greeted by the guy sitting on another stool. I guess he’s a regular here as everyone seemed to know his name. Cheers! Realize it’s 11am and he’s already a tumbler pass the slurring stage. Oh well. I’m not one to judge. The bartender then smiles and offers samples if I wanted any. Since it’s nearing lunch and I’m craving a burger… I turn down the samples, and instead notice the Fish ‘n Chips special! I mean seriously it was screaming my name! Or, was it the toddler, or perhaps the drunkard mall-​rat to my left. Nope it was the F ‘n C…

Holy Puka! I have to say that was one of the best Fish ‘n Chips since Monterey Bay, CA. It was better than expected. Crispy on the outside and oh so moist in the inside. Yay. Fries were light and fresh and worked so well with the Black Porter. Mmm. I’m drooling about it at this moment! The Lagunitas NorCal I didn’t care for as much as I thought I would. I mean it’s blonde… And everyone knows how I love my blonde… Blondie: «One Way or Another».
Oh yes! It was a casual lunch at a high-​end grocery store, at a mall, that I never expected to be so enjoyable! I ate well, drank weller, watched the Telly, and had many LOL stories with a nice drunkard that resembled, well… Peter Weller! Sans the Robocop Suit… Since then I’ve been here several times now! Hope you enjoy it like I did… I know the Milfs do;)
Nice Chill Spot. 4.5-STARS!

So a buddy of mine shoots me a text and states «Hey, meet me at Puka», along with some pics of drinks. I said «where»? He said Wholefoods! I was perplexed. I thought you were Wholefoods? You have booze. We’ll, you can imagine how the rest of the conversation went. I had to call him. Lol.
I park near Wholefoods, walk and low and behold, I see a watering hole attached to it. I sit, look around, good size, good selection and food. My curiousity was peaked. I ordered a Malbec and some Sushi. Both came out in a flash. Not bad at all, obviously, because had 2 more Malbecs. Lol. Oh… and the sushi was pretty dang good.
This is a good place to come, grab a few drinks, pupus and catch up with friends or to just prepare yourself to do battle in the produce aisle at Wholefoods.

Lots of options for Vegans! I love the Vegan sushi, and the Vegan Taro Burger. For the burger you can switch out the buns for regular fries or add a dollar for sweet potato fries. This is my go to place to meet with friends. There is plenty of seating, and something on the menu for everyone and a full bar! My favorite alcoholic drink to get is the Pineapple Cider. Also parking is not bad at Kahala Mall, but you may have to park far and walk on busy nights. I can’t wait to come back to try the Vegan flatbreads with daiya cheese! The only con is that they don’t stay open very late, they close at 9pm and do last call for food and drinks at 8:30pm.

I did not happy the food taste. Cold French fries. Very hard hamburger with no flavor. I gave stars from r the server! He was pretty good tho. As soon as I told my fires are cold he bring the fresh one!
If I go back there’s… I will just have salad.

Pukas is consistently a three star place. It’s unfortunate because I want to rate them higher, but every time I go in something bad happens. I once got a chunk of plastic in my salad, and when I told them about it, they were like…“sorry?” Today it was clear that our server was trying really hard, but he’s struggling because not only is he a server but he’s bussing and running food as well. We watched while our salads and fries (ordered as an appetizer) Sat in the window waiting to be taken to us for more than 10min. We ended up having appetizers delivered with drinks and entre, and we’d ordered them separately on purpose. This has happened a lot here, but we never laid attention to why until today (we also serve tables and usually busy ourselves chatting and not worrying about this stuff).
Bottom line:
Positive: Great food. I love the BLT, Fish N’ chips, and spicy crab sushi roll. Nice décor. Usually has games on the TV, decent beer and wine selections, but often out of what you’ll want so have a 2^nd choice.
Negatives: poor service (servers are too busy and food comes out in a weird order), weird seating.
Would recommend to a friend, but would explain what to expect because it’s about ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ good to bad experiences there.

Taco Tuesdays?! Yes please! After Whole Foods discontinued their taco Tuesdays, we decided to check out their new side restaurant. First of all, I highly recommend to grab a seat inside because the outside seating can get very hot and busy.
Unfortunately we weren’t able to sit inside so we had a table outside. They have these blocks that you can move whether or not if you would like service or not. Though we wanted service, it took a while for someone to notice us. Service was okay but really slow. Waters were left empty after one refill. The food… Tacos were okay but not worth the price. We also order their special burger which was really good w/​fries. The burger had a whole lot of different toppings which actually went really well.
It was an okay experience but maybe next time I’ll skip out on taco Tuesdays. Hopefully service will be a little faster.

I don’t get out to Kahala area very often, but I’m glad that my family and I got to try Puka’s when we stopped by Whole Foods.
The atmosphere is really laidback and chill. The best part of the décor has to be the beautiful honu picture by Clark Little (An amazing underwater photographer).
Wait time was a little long, but to be fair we went in during prime lunch time hour so it was definitely expected. Also, I give the cooks two thumbs up for working in such a small kitchen and being able to bang out food.
We decided to sit at the bar because my dad loves to try new beers. It turned out great because the bartender let us sample a bunch of different beers which helped with the wait time.
I decided to get the BLT which was an awesome choice. Soft yet toasted bread, lots of crispy/​thick cut bacon, fried green tomatoes, Avocado, and a nice sauce (I think it was chipotle). It was so huge that I could only eat half. Served up with french fries and paired with a glass of ACE Pineapple Cider made for a great lunch.

I’ve been on a mission to try new spots out because a lot of places have been opening up. Puka has been open for awhile but I still have yet to dine here. It was the perfect spot today because my friend met me for lunch in Kahala Mall and only had about an hour for lunch. It was a spot we both didn’t try yet so we decided to dine here.
When we walked in, we saw a sign to seat ourselves. It was pretty busy and all the tables were taken so we sat at the giant table in the middle of the restaurant. It worked out because we both could watch the game on their flat screen TV’s. Our server quickly brought over the food and drink menus. Both menus were simple and made it easy for us to decide what we wanted.
Our server came back and we ordered. We both ordered Da Big Kahuna Burger and a beer each. I ordered the Lanikai IPA and he had the hefeweizen. Our beers came out very cold and right after we ordered it. The food took awhile to come out but they were pretty busy. Our food came out perfect, my burger was medium rare and the fries came out crispy as I ordered it. The burger was juicy and fries weren’t oily.
Just a heads up if you ask for tabasco, they only have their version of hot sauce. Personally it tastes about the same and it’s no biggie. The meal was good and the beer was a perfect pairing for what we ordered. Great spot if you want a good and quick meal in Kahala Mall.

A friend of mine and I decided to have a quick bite before a movie. We opted for Puka’s because it was so close to the theatre. We decided to have the Fish and Chips special which came with a choice of beer.
The service was excellent, but I can’t say the same for the Fish and Chips. The overly greasy breading was just too much to handle for both of us. We ended up peeling most of it away just to enjoy some of the fish. We came to the conclusion that the oil was too brown not to have been burnt.
It was a little sad because you expect more from something associated with Whole Foods, not grease saturated fish. Anyway, I would recommend them for wines and tapas, just not the Fish and Chips!

2 drinks, one kids meal and one charcuterie platter + tip = $ 50.00. The amount of food and quality of food was not worth the price. The seating area is uncomfortable, it’s chaotic and loud. I thought it would be catered more towards adults but you have shared space with tweens who are bumping into you as you eat. It wasn’t the most pleasant dining environment. The workers were rushing around and you almost feel bad for them — the distance between the restaurant and the furtherest table is pretty far.
I would probably come back with more people and hopefully the dining experience will be a little better.

Pukas is great if you want a quick, simple meal & even better with a beer. My first visit was about a month ago on a Sunday afternoon where drinks (beers & wines) were $ 1 off daily from 2−5PM (awesome). I had fish & chips & my bf had their charcuterie platter. I also has a Lindemans Framboise, one of my favorite beers (first time I’ve seen it on tap) & my bf had Rogue Dead Guy Ale. We were given popcorn as a snack while waiting for our food. The combo of food & beer was perfect. The fish was meaty & the batter was crispy. Fries were good. My bf loved his charcuterie platter & beer too. We had the molten chocolate skillet cookie for dessert, which I found to be dry, although it was accompanied by caramel sauce. Maybe a scoop of vanilla ice cream would have been helped.
We had a quick meal before shopping at Whole Foods tonight. I chose the 3 taco for $ 12 option (2 fish, one pork since I wasn’t in a mood for beef) & my bf had the fish & chips where you have a choice of sweet potato fries, truffle fries or regular fries where he chose the sweet potato fries. I had a beer blend of Lindemans framboise & pineapple beer (a nice recommendation from our server Amber) and my bf had a Guinness. The tacos were very good & I like the fish taco the most. I snuck some of my bf’s sweet potato fries, which were very good. He liked his meal too. Our beers were refreshing.
They rotate their beer taps so you’ll always have a chance to try something new.

I wish they had a few simple dessert options like Ono Pops (they feature their beverages) or a scoop of gelato or sorbet.

Great new place to hang out and have a bite and a flight of wine or beer (they have 24 local and imported beer on tap.
Environment:
When you walk in you see a beautiful mosiac of a turtle in the ocean. The wall and ceiling is made out of cork. The décor is very hip and trendy. You can sit inside and outside. There are wooden blocks on the table. If you want service turn it up to the green side that says, «full service.» If you just want to chillax then make sure the red side is up. You can also drink outside.
Menu: What my sister and I ordered.
It’s decently priced considering that its in the inside of Whole Foods. This place offers your typical bar food wings, fries, burgers, fish & chips, pizzas, and sushi. They also have a keiki plates for your children.
Before our meals came we were given two cups of freshly popped popcorn. It was seasoned with garlic and salt. I wasn’t sure if we could get more, but my sister and I ate everything.
I ordered the TACOS (you can choose to have all 3 of the different tacos offered or all of the same, whatever your fancy they’ll do it for you). I choose one of each. It’s priced at $ 12.
*Kailua Pig (My favorite out of the 3): It is topped with porter bbq sauce and purple cabbage.
*Beer Braised Beef: It’s topped with pickled onion, queso fresco and cilantro. The meat was nice and soft. I usually don’t like onion and everything complemented each other well.
*Seared Fish: It’s topped with wasabi mayo and mango salsa. This was my 2^nd favorite. But if I would come again I would still order it like this. I just like variety in my life. That’s why I’m fond of buffets and if they offer things on the menu with a trio, I usually end up with that choice.
I also ordered the Flight of Wines. It cost $ 10. You can choose any four wines that is under $ 10. I choose these wines:
* Ulupalakua Red (I was never to fond of red wines because I have a sweet tooth). I gave it to my sister.
* Santa Julia Innovacion Rose (I enjoyed this, it wasn’t sweet, it was subtle).
* Kung Fu Riesling (I just got it cause of the name and it turned out to be my favorite out of all four).
*Spirito d’Italia Pinot Grigio
My little sister ordered the special for that day (They offer different specials Monday-​Friday) We came on a Thursday around 7 p.m. and it was half full when we arrived. The special for that day was the Burger and Brew. It cost $ 10 and she could choose which beer she wanted. She choose the Lanikai 808 IPA it contained 8.1% alcohol. My sister may be tiny but she probably could beat you in a drinking game. It didn’t come with fries. The burger is Puka’s Classic Burger that comes with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. I wish the server let us know that it didn’t come with fries so we could have ordered some.
Service:
I didn’t see a hostess at the front so we sat ourselves. We were greeted right away. It was wonderful. She was totally working it. She was serving a large party. Everyone who was sitting on the high tops with us. She was very attentive. Kept our drinks filled, asked us how we were doing, took our plates away, etc. The staff worked as a team and other team members dropped off our food. On my receipt it states that our servers name is Buzz. Not sure if that’s the name she told us in the beginning.
Happy Hour:
They do offer happy hour from 2pm-​5pm daily. It’s $ 1 off all draft beers and wine by the glass. As I mentioned in the middle of the review they also offer different daily specials as well.
Overall:
My sister and I had a wonderful time. We plan to return asap and taste the other drinks and food.

Wow, I’ve found a new favorite place to hang out at Kahala mall. Although it’s been hot as hell these past few weeks, it’s actually nice to sit outside (in the shade) and be waited on with food and drink by the Puka’s staff. There’s a nice little indoor seating area too. Even their logo is cute (and in my favorite color – teal!).
Who knew that whole foods would be able to serve food and drinks in that little outdoor seating area in front of whole foods and Starbucks? After renovating the area, that little side shop that used to be Cinnabon so long ago has turned into a restaurant that caters to diners who wish to sit outside. Next to a parking lot. Lol it’s actually not too bad. There used to be large umbrellas used to shade customers sitting outside, but they blew down apparently and were removed.
The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. The first time I went, there were a few blips: my menu was printed wrong; both sides of the sheet were for food, when it should have been one side for food, one for drinks. The waiter also made a mistake with our order. In both cases, the problem was fixed immediately and courteously.
The menu has changed a couple times since Puka’s opened. The sushi doesn’t seem to be popular. I honestly haven’t tried it either, but I do like the tacos and pizzas. We tried the Greek pizza, which I liked a lot. The tacos are also good; I think the beef one is my favorite. They have nice happy hour drink specials and daily food specials like a beer and taco combo for the price of just the tacos. It’s kinda like getting a free beer with your food!
I will definitely be back for some great people watching while munching on tacos. :)

I had a really good dinner here with my boyfriend the other night. Usually we just get takeout from WF but decided to try something new for a change.
There was a few seats indoors but we sat outdoors. Inside it very beautifully decorated with a nice ambiance. We sat outside mixed in with patrons that didn’t have table service. We had great, attentive service and there were several employees working the outdoor section available to help when needed.
The food menu is simple but wide ranging. There’s standard bar fare like burgers and fries, but they also have sushi and flatbread pizza! On the Friday I went, they had a special for fish and chips and a Rogue brew for just $ 12! Awesome deal! The fish was delicious and the burger and sweet potato fries my partner got was also very good.
We will definitely be back! Love the menu, service and a fun way to eat good food from Whole Foods!

When you look at a picture of a delicious flat bread pizza, how can you not want to come here just to try it?
I was working at Kahala Mall today, and upon finishing up a job at a local bank, I decided to take a short stroll down to Puka’s at the Whole Foods Market.
Upon walking into the small space which use to be the old Cinnabon’s, I could clearly see that the place was still busy even around 2:00 PM.
As I waited to see if I could secure a table inside, a clerk had acknowledged me, and I told him I did not know how this works as far as seating or ordering food. He told me I could sit inside, or take a table outside. I told him since inside was crowded, I would sit outside. He then told me that he would send someone outside right away to provide service for us.
As we sat, nobody came to drop off water or a menu… and this went on for over 10 minutes. Finally, my friend gets up and grabs a menu from one of the open tables that someone had left behind.
Upon scanning the menu, I had my heart set on a Flat Bread Pizza because after I saw the pic that my Unilocal buddy — Lori I. had posted… I just had to try it! Who doesn’t love pizza right?
When the waiter finally shows up, he acknowledges us, and tells us he will bring some water… we ended up waiting a little longer for our water, as I saw him delivering food to other tables.
After our waiter shows up with two glasses of water, & a complimentary popcorn, he apologizes for the wait.
We placed our food order right away, as I was thinking I may not see him again real soon.
From the time we placed our food order, I must say the food came out quickly, which was a lot faster than getting our waters or eating utensils.
Now for the grub…
Like I said before… I came here to try the Flat Bread Pizza, and guess what? They were out of Flat Bread! So no Flat Bread Pizza for me! :((Sad Panda!)
So I went with plan «B» and ordered the Chicken Wings. The Chicken Wings are made with 3 types of sauces —
1. Korean Sauce.
2. Sriracha Sauce.
3. BBQ Sauce.
I ended up getting the Chicken Wings with Korean Sauce (you get 10 Wings) with some carrot & celery sticks. And I also ordered a side order of fries.
My friend ended up ordering the Classic Burger.
The Classic Burger comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, & a pickle. And it also comes with a side order of fries.
What can I say about the grub?
Well I ended up splitting my meal with my friend, so I ate ½ a burger and 5 chicken wings.
The burger tasted very lean… bun was soft, and of course the veggies that came with the burger was fresh. Very good burger.
The chicken wings… simply ONO! I loved the Korean sauce!
If I could say something about the chicken wings, I only wished the chicken wings were battered, as the chicken wings I got were naked.
Oh, and although the waiter told me you get «10 wings», I guess the cook don’t know how to count, as gave me only 9 wings. (You can’t fool a Chinese!).
As I was talking to my friend, he told me you should ask for the missing wing. Normally I would just let it go, but for some reason today, I actually told the waiter before we started to eat our food…“Yo, the cook ‘wen short me a wing!“
And the waiter promptly brought us two more wings, so we made out an extra chicken wing. Yay! (For a free extra wing!)
Overall, the food was delicious! I give it a SOLID «4», but had to minus a point for spotty service, and for not having Flat Bread Pizza today…,
To be fair about the service, I only saw one guy handling all the tables outside — so the dude was taking the food orders, & serving the food. I also saw him busing the tables too!
Poor guy… I made sure I tipped him well.

24 beers on tap. Wine. Sushi. Burgers. Flatbread pizza. Steak. Fries. Wings. Tacos. Charcuterie. It’s not a big menu but what they do have works well and will please even the pickiest families. They open at 10am daily but don’t serve food til 11am. (So you can get beer at 10am, but not food?)
PRICE. Approx $ 10/​entrée. You know that you could EASILY spend $ 10+ at the hot food deli inside Whole Foods, so this is actually a pretty good deal. The pizza my daughter ordered was $ 8, and my burger was $ 12.
SEATING. Indoor or outdoor. Seat yourself. You can bring your Whole Foods items into Puka’s to have a beer. You can sit inside even if you’re only eating a burrito you purchased at Whole Foods, however, that limits the seats/​tables for those of us who want to dine-​in with full service. If you sit outside on the cement tables, flip the wooden block to «green» to get service. Because all of the seating is mixed (some people eating for dine-​in service, some people eating their salad bar from or pastries from inside), service can be a little spotty but we sat inside by the bar and we didn’t really have any service issues.
BEER. $ 6−10/16oz glass. (Happy Hour 2−5pm $ 1 off draft) Don’t know which one to get? You can choose a skateboard with a flight that comes with 4−4oz samples. AND if you don’t know what you want, you can even sample before you get your samples. I don’t know anywhere that lets you sample beer, but these guys do. Monday special: wings and beer $ 10. Thursdays you can get a burger and beer for $ 10. They even have 3 GLUTEN FREE beers (in a bottle). My husband was pretty stoked to see Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Milk Stout on tap.
PIZZA. At $ 8 – 10, this is a better deal than CPK. My kids got the cheese flatbread pizza and said it’s better than the cheese pizza at CPK.
BURGER.
I saved this for last since most people don’t read all the way to the end of my reviews. So if you made it this far, there is a burger called Da Big Kahuna Burger ($ 12). It’s not the best burger at the mall (hello Counter burger), but it comes with your choice of fries or mediterranean salad, and BACON JAM. Oh yes bacon jam. This stuff is deeelish. The last time I told you my bacon secret at Whole Foods you know what happened, so keep this bacon jam on the DL. I put the avocado and bacon jam all over my bunless burger and mixed it with my mediterranean salad it was absolute heaven.
VERDICT: We’ll be back.

Reasonable prices for WHOLEFOODS. We paid $ 21 for two entrees (no drinks). I had the IPA battered fish n chips and furikake fries. My wife had the Kahala BLT. My was pretty good but I wished they cooked my fish a little longer. My wife didn’t enjoy hers so much, as she didn’t like the fried green tomato.
A lot of outdoor seating and just flip the wooden block to FULL SERVICE to be served. Otherwise others are welcome to sit there to eat their WF takes out or drink coffee etc. Service was nice and fast. This will be a nice addition for food at Kahala Mall, which needs it badly.

We returned today after our finishing our usual walking route to try more healthy and tasty choices at Puka’s. We even got to watch the NBA game between the GS Warriors and the Memphis Grizzlies. This time, I remembered to check-​in, take more pictures AND get the names of our friendly efficient service team members (Dan and Steve).
I’ve been «enamored» with the Maui Taro Mediterranean burger so this is the second time that I’ve ordered it. The mild taro taste is evident and there’s a nice slather of hummus on the bottom half of the bun to «hold the patty in place». Yes, it’s a vegan burger that tasty and healthy. It comes with either a side salad (mixed greens or kale) or French fries. Other options that you can choose are sweet potato fries, cheese, bacon, guacamole, caramelized onions or a fried egg at additional cost. But, this taro burger doesn’t need anything more. So, I just chose the kale salad. Dan, our server, noted that I wanted Feta cheese with my burger and the kitchen put the Feta in my kale salad and even gave me an additional container of cheese to put onto my burger. Yeah, it’s odd for this omnivore to eat such clean vegan style food. But, don’t knock it… Puka’s does this dish flavorfully.
My husband, on the other hand, decided to try the Oyster Po’Boy. Puka’s take was a fusion of NOLA and Vietnamese banh mi. The French loaf was stuffed with beer battered fried oysters with a sesame seed oil dressing and Asian-​style pickled vegetables. He ordered his sandwich with the French fries that were crisp on the outside and fluffy on its interior. He liked it so much that he even pulled his plate closer to him and guarded his sandwich from me like a dog. Well, he eventually gave in and let me have a bite and this Po’Boy was certainly tasty and «party central» for our tastebuds.
For the second day in a row, we drank the Ace Pineapple Cider with our meal. But, today, we ventured out to try the Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Milk Stout. Steve, our other server, even asked us if either of us had nut allergies or was lactose-​intolerant. We thought that was very responsible and showed concern for people’s health.
