We specialize in guided walking tours in Waikīkī. Our walking tours are easy and fun with lively storytelling by Hawaiian guides knowledgeable about the culture, history, legends, and songs of Waikīkī. We specialize also in traditional practices and offer lessons in Hawaiian dance and song (hula and mele), ocean spiritual cleansing (hi’uwai), and outrigger canoe paddling.

History

Established in 2015.

Hōkūpa’a means the North Star. Ancient Polynesians used Hōkūpa’a to guide them to the islands of Hawai’i. Today our company, Hōkūpa’a, offers guided cultural experiences in Waikīkī. Hōkūpa’a wants to teach and show guests the essence of Waikīkī through the art of storytelling and lessons in traditional practices. Hawaiians believe that Waikīkī sense of place is the essence of a spiritual power, or mana. Hawaiian royalty of long ago once resided in Waikīkī for spiritual wellness and healing. Our eight distinctive walking tours tell their stories and our three traditional practices in dance, canoe paddling, and ocean cleansing and wellness offer our guests a cultural experience.

Meet the Manager

Joseph Pekelo Kekipi Bright R.

Manager

«Joe» is one of Hōkūpa’a leading storyteller. He is a cultural historian of Waikīkī and a direct descendant of King Kamehameha I, through Kahiwa Kanekapolei. His kumu (teacher) was the late Dr. George Kanahele, historical scholar of Waikīkī and one of the Living Treasures of Hawai’i. Joe is filled with the knowledge handed down for generations and his knowledge of Hawaiian language only reinforces his rich, spiritual heritage and cultural legacy. He is recognized as one of the leading authorities on Waikīkī and its stories of yesteryear.
