Courtyard Waikiki Beach

The description on this hotel should say ‘Near Waikiki Beach’. It was about a 10 minute walk down to the beach. We stayed here with Marriott Rewards points and found the hotel to be serviceable. The parking situation was a little aggravating having to use a Valet but that is Waikiki. Our room had a view of other buildings. It was still nice but felt like you were staying in a room in any other big city in Hawaii. Given a choice I would have stayed elsewhere to get the true experience of the Islands.
If you like a ton of people, congestion, a lively night scene then this might be a good choice. We basically left each day and escaped to less crowded locals. We did like the Pool and the lobby area was very nice.

My aunt gifted us two nights here for the first portion of our stay in Waikiki. Let me begin by saying, I would never choose to stay here unless it were free.
Parking is valet only. Valet was a heaping $ 37/​night. The valet guys were pretty cool for the most part with the exception of one lady who was just stank our entire time.
The nicest person we came across was the front desk guy (don’t remember his name) and the cleaning lady on our floor.
Why would I not choose to stay here?
1. Renovation: we had a speck of an ocean view room which was great but couldn’t use the balcony because of renovation. Construction woke me up in the morning.
2. Closeness in proximity to surrounding buildings: it just felt weird opening the curtains knowing I can see right into the rooms across the street which meant they can see into our room. So we rarely had natural light from both of our windows.
3. Ridiculously small bathrooms: the shower was a small corner and it was dark. The bathroom was dimly lit, small and for how small it was, you’d think they at least have a fan circulating the air.
4. Parking: it was EXPENSIVE. More expensive than our Moana Surfrider resort fee that included free parking and a ton of other amazing amenities.
The only pro to this hotel closeness to everything: shopping, a few blocks from the beach.
Again, don’t waste your money staying here. There are other amazing options on the island at the same price point.

We stayed in January during construction so we did not have access to our lanai. The gentleman at the front desk informed us that the room we had was recently renovated which was a plus. The room itself was pretty tiny. There was no tub, only a stand-​in shower. The bathroom lighting was very minimal, it was like taking a shower in a cave. The bathroom is tiny as well. This hotel has connecting rooms and thin walls; we could hear our neighbors watching TV and I think our alarm at 5am woke them up as well. We were on the 14^th floor but we could still hear the street noise below. Thankfully we were too tired each night to care.
At one point our shower became clogged and began filling up with water. We notified the front desk and ask to be moved to another room but the gentleman said it would be best to send up a repair man to fix the drain instead of move us because we would be down-​grading in room quality. He said if it couldn’t be fixed, he would find us the nicest room available. I wish he would have moved us to the nicest room available right away instead of sending some guy to our room to work on the drain. If they did, we would have given them 5 stars.
All in all, the hotel was okay. Clean and close to everything, but we would have been happier with an upgrade since it shower was acting up.

We stayed 10 nights during Christmas and New Years using Marriott points booked months in advance. I checked reviews online 10 days before arrival and learned of the construction and complaints of noise and no balcony access. It was too late to book elsewhere using points and it was too expensive to pay during peak holiday. It was very noisy but by far our biggest problem was no access to our balcony. Here we are in Hawaii and cannot enjoy the balcony! Not even on the two holidays when workers were off. It was very unfortunate! I felt screwed over using my hard earned points on this hotel. If I would have known in advance of the construction I would have booked elsewhere.
The room was remodeled. I couldn’t put clothes in the drawers as the stain smell inside was so strong. It got in my clothes and took days to air them out. It was not a good experience.
I also thought it was strange the clothes closet was in the bathroom.
The pool was too cold to enjoy and whenever we wanted to use the hot tub there was always someone getting a «floating» spa treatment. The tub did not seem big enough to have a person floating (with a therapist) and hotel guests at the same time. Well at least too close for my comfort.
The remodeling in our room seemed to be very unprofessional. Poor quality work. Lots of noticeable flaws. Definately not what we expected for a Courtyard.
The hotel is a good central location. Many restaurants nearby (check Unilocal). Shopping opportunties everywhere. Two convenient stores on corner. Beach was 10 – 15 min walk. Bus stop right outside the hotel ($ 2.50 a person to Diamond Head). We rented a nearby car for the day for $ 50. We used Über for trip back to airport for $ 15. Yay!
I love Marriott properties but this stay was the pits.
Book elsewhere — at least until construction is complete.

Awful hotel. Sounds like the street below is in my room. Not clean. Not upto the Marriot standards AT ALL. Very disappointed.

I’m shocked Marriott ’ s name is on this hotel. I realize they are renovating, but I’m surprised the damp, shoddy remodeled rooms make code. They must have been in a hurry to get them occupied, it looks like a 24 hour renovation from start to finish and no electrical upgrades. No power to bedsides, tried to charge my phone at night, realized lamp was plugged into a cheap outlet strip that was so tight I couldn’t pull it up from the floor to plug my phone in. Other side of the bed had nothing. So really marriott, my only option was to plug my phone in on the bathroom counter, it was the only accessible outlet in the entire one bedroom «suite» not to mention room was not very cleaN, sheets had stains and the garbage under the sink was not empties and had Chinese takeout garbage from guests before which reeked. Due to renovations, the sliding doors were locked shut so on 7^th floor in a stuffy damp room with no fresh air and it smelled like paint. We are loyal Marriott customers and spent an amazing 7 nights at the Ko Olina so this was a cruddy way to end our trip. Location was pretty good for walking and all the staff was very nice. And agree with other reviews, very loud until 4 am.

Many others have trashed this place, likely because they were staying in the pre-​renovation rooms. I stayed here for three nights around the Honolulu marathon and had an OK experience.
My room had been recently renovated and was nicely decorated, clean and comfortable– located in the back tower on Royal Hawaiian, this building is tucked off of the mayhem of Kuhio Avenue. Overall, the location is good– central to Waikiki and the beach.
But as many others have said: this is a noisy shoe-​box. It’s just a limitation of the building’s design. Entry doors open onto open-​air balconies. And the lanai sliding doors are not well soundproofed. Sounds of car alarms, drilling, buses, jack hammers and boisterous drunks echo through the walls. If you’re looking for quiet, don’t go to Waikiki!
Unlike others reported, I had only pleasant experiences with the staff. When I complained about the massive, engine-​idling buses parked beneath my balcony, they promptly sent someone out to ask the idiot-​driver to shut his engine down. And after the marathon, the staff offered to send ice to my room. These were nice touches and I think the staff is working hard to make the best of a marginal property.
If you need a convenient place to stay and are not a light sleeper, this is a reasonable option. If not, bring ear plugs or stay at the Marriott on the beach.

2.5 star — Waikiki hotel.
1.5 star — Courtyard
PRO: Walking distance to beach (1.5 blocks). Getting another face-​lift. Friendly staff.
CON: 1980’s rooms, poor sound insulation, both inside and outside sounds, expect to clearly hear your neighbors on both sides, all people and cleaning staff in the halls, and traffic even from the poolside of the 16^th floor. Construction for over two years (2014 – 15) of staying here. Room balconies are currently sealed off for construction.
PRO/​CON: Filthy room carpets are being replaced, outdated and well worn bathroom are being updated, and rooms painted. Hopefully you get an upgraded room.
HINT: If you comprehend that Waikiki is roughly analogous to NYC on the beach, then expect small rooms /​bathrooms, small pool, minimum amenities, busy street sounds, and expensive rates. Given that, this is a reasonable lower priced hotel on Waikiki.
Hotel History:
1980’s — Assume the hotel was built in the 1980’s. Hotel has the look and feel in all aspects of the 1980’s.
2005 — Wyland Bought Ohana Waikiki Surf Hotel in 2005. $ 2M renovation.
2006 — Before the hotel opened, Wyland announced that it would be managed by Hilton (Doubletree). Expected rates ~$ 300 per night.
2006-​Oct — Opened briefly but closed because a MOLD problem.
2007 — Hilton backed out of the deal to manage the hotel under the Doubletree brand.
2009 — Marriott Courtyard took over.

Husband and I stayed here for four nights (Oct. 28 — Nov. 1) on the Oahu leg of our Hawaiian honeymoon.
Location: Excellent! Within walking distance of several attractions, at an easy location to pick up the local bus and quite a few tours, with an IHOP and an ABC store across the street. It was a few blocks off the main strip and so a bit removed from the craziness, but close enough that we could walk to it. That was the best thing about this place. I was not thrilled with the rest of our experience here, though.
Clerk: Rude as hell. Construction meant that, despite having booked an upgraded King room, with a balcony and a fridge/​microwave, the hotel could not get us a balcony room, just one with a fridge/​microwave. I asked the front desk clerk if we could pay the lower rate or get some sort of discount, given that we weren’t getting what we had booked. She said no, and I think my question aggravated her — she got really rude and condescending after that. She said the hotel told «all travel agents» by the time we booked; when we told her we booked through the Marriott website, she said it was posted «very clearly» at the time we booked.
Speaking of «very clearly,» we had listed in our booking note on the website that we were on our honeymoon, and the clerk didn’t acknowledge it. Not even a congratulations for the people whose booking note says «It’s our honeymoon!» and are wearing Bride and Groom hats at check-​in. Seriously, we’d gotten congratulations from people on the street, people on the plane, passengers on the airport shuttle — and we weren’t giving any of them close to $ 800 for four nights’ stay. I know it sounds petty, but everyone else we met on all three islands we went to was excited for us, except this one clerk. We had to ask her about honeymoon specials, and only then did she pull out two free drink coupons for the hotel bar. Still didn’t congratulate us, though. It was awkward.
Room: Nice enough room — plenty of outlets, comfortable bed, shower that comfortably fit two (honeymoon, don’t judge), roomy drawers — and I’ll even excuse the broken closet doors that nearly fell on me when I tried to open them. What I can’t excuse is where they put us. We were on the second floor, next to the stairwell that leads to the pool/​main lobby below. Our front window opened up to the corridor everyone in our tower used to access the pool and main lobby, and the small window at the back of the room opened up to a construction site, which meant we had to keep the shades closed/​got zero natural light the whole time. The walls were paper-​thin — we could hear every time the doors closed in the rooms near us and all the conversations of people next door and those walking by on their way to the pool/​lobby. To have so many people, mostly families with very young kids, walking by in the morning when my husband and I were getting busy made ME uncomfortable — I can only imagine how those parents and kids felt hearing us.
Construction caused the main access to our room to be blocked for part of the day — from 9 – 5, we had to use a secondary stairway from the parking area. We found this out when we came back from a tour at noon one day. It was also when we found that housekeeping is apparently slow to get to our part of the hotel — our room hadn’t been cleaned yet, so we had no more clean towels. It was NOON. We had left at 7 that morning for the tour and did not have a do-​not-​disturb up. I have never seen staff wait so long to clean a room before. To their credit, after I called to ask for more towels, housekeeping brought up two towels within about 15 minutes and offered to clean the room then. I asked them to come back after 12:50, as that’s when we were leaving for our next tour, and when we got back from that tour at 6 that night, our room had been cleaned.
Pools: Really cold. Not just «cold for Hawaii,» but so cold as to not be refreshing. We tried to swim, but we couldn’t stand it more than a few minutes. The hot tub was nice, but always packed — probably because the pool was so cold. The hotel seems strict about pool closing time — at 9:55 the staff was putting signs out that the pool was «closed for maintenance.»
Miscellaneous: Bar was nice, with good drink/​snack prices during happy hour (two per day — in the afternoon, then late at night). The coffee shop has good food and POG nectar that I really liked, but we got there a little before 7 one morning only to find a note on their menu board saying they were already out of waffles. It wasn’t even 7 yet — how can they already be out of a breakfast option? The business center was another high point, with several computers and no restrictions on printing, so I was able to print my boarding passes and airport shuttle passes from my email.
Definitely will not return.

I have stayed at many Courtyards and up to now have been very happy.
I am staying here as I write this review and am not at all happy.
I booked the room months ago and did not know the buildings are in the middle of a major upgrade. To be fair — renovation is much needed. I stayed here many years ago when it was still the Wayland. Sadly it looks like no renovations have been done in 10 years. The hall carpet and our room carpet are stained and worn. The room needs paint and is an ugly institutional green. One of the reasons we selected this hotel was to get a balcony. On arrival we were informed all balconies had been locked due to renovations.
They are currently renovating the top three floors of my building. It looks to me like the whole building is in need of renovation.
My advice? Avoid this location until the entire building is renovated! It does not currently meet the standards that I have come to expect from Courtyard Hotels.

This place is a dump! When we booked, they didn’t mention the construction. Very hard to get in and out of with one way streets.
The room smells of mildew, very small! The bathroom is a joke, looks like a cruise ship room. Don’t drop your soap in the shower, because it’s SOOO small you won’t be able to bend over to pick it up. There’s no where to put your toiletries, no counter space. Just the toilet lid. I can’t get over how small the rooms are and the balcony is closed due to construction.
Staff was very unfriendly, valet is a joke here. They didn’t load/​unload our bags. Made me hold the door when they handed me the luggage. Didn’t bring it into the room, and then expected a tip. Don’t stay here, don’t waste your money!

Im seeing some less than positive reviews about this hotel, and Im not sure why. The Courtyard Marriott is by far the nicest hotel in this price range in Waikiki. I have stayed here at least a dozen times and never had a bad experience. Its is currently under renovation, but everything you need is right here.
The pool and hot tub are my favorite things about this hotel. Okay,… And maybe the bar!
Its a smaller hotel and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. It is in the heart of Waikiki and close to the beach.

Had a great stay here on our last night in Oahu.
We were so happy we were able to check in early (we had a crappy hotel the night before and we wanted to get the heck out of there!) all the front desk ladies were very warm and nice.
They were doing construction and that was noted on signs throughout the property. Thankfully is was from 9 – 5 when we were out and about.
I don’t know what it is about Courtyard beds but they are so comfy! Our room was small but very clean and pleasant. There is an ABC store very close by that we went to get last minute mac nuts (we are obsessed!) and gifts. Also there was a tasty pizza place across the street.
Great location, free wifi, clean room, nice staff. Great job! Would totally recommend this hotel! :)

We enjoyed our stay at the Marriott. Thankful for the free wifi but the cost to park was $ 30−35/day and you can easily find something in the area more affordable. Very enjoyable and quaint lobby and bar area. We enjoyed the restaurant next door as well (which also does take out in case you prefer to eat in your room. We did mozz stick and jalapeño poppers from there in our room with a movie one night and were so relaxed).
The pool was nice and beautiful. I felt like I was having a luxurious day of relaxation while I read a book down there.
This is conveniently located but you will not have a view of the beach which was really the primary reason that we have it only 4 stars. There are some similarly priced hotels with views of the beach.
The linens used my Marriott (I feel) are always superior to those used by other hotels. The maid service was prompt and thorough. The room itself was very clean.
The shower was a little small but the balcony was bigger than most places we’ve stayed in the area.
It is very military friendly and we noticed several military men coming home in the evening which always makes me happy to see.
If you’re a Marriott rewards member, definitely worth staying here! Even if you’re not, I would recommend it.

Think again before staying here. I have *never* seen a hotel this disgusting. I don’t care that they are going to renovate, no hotel should ever get to the state that this one is in. Roaches, mold, filth and the worst stay of my entire life at any hotel. I would need to write a novel based on our experience at this hotel.
* Filthy carpet, walls, sheets, every surface of the room.
* The towels in our brand new room had been used and housekeeping just folded them back up and put them back on the shelf to be used again.
* Mold… the walls, ceiling, floors were BLACK with it.
* Dirty, stained sheets. One morning I woke up with grease ALL over me. One of the pillow cases they had used had a huge clump of grease in it. I was covered in the morning and had to scrub it off.
* Faulty outlets — my blow dryer blew up and lit my shirt on fire. No joke.
* Staff never followed up with any of the issues.
By the end of our stay, we could only laugh at how horrific the entire experience was. Please do not even chance a stay at this place… a 1 star motel would be far nicer.

Decent hotel, and friendly staff for the most part.
Checking in or out was never a problem, and the only other time I ever interacted with the front desk was a good experience. Helpful and nice to talk to — tone of voice and friendly attitude.
Nice décor and layout on the first floor. The hotel room we had was small, but it suited me and siblings’ needs for a short, unexpected trip back home — clean with comfortable beds. We had to laugh when we saw the size of the bathroom though — looked like they had planned to put a small bathtub instead of a small shower. Small kine shower, but it was unique ’cause it had a thing to hook up and create a clothesline — sister used it to hang dry our bathing suits before packing it. We just wished our bathroom counter had more space ’cause my sister’s stuff was overflowing to the dresser/​TV area.
I guess the only thing I didn’t like about our short stay here was interacting with one valet guy. He had a bad vibe that I’m going to guess existed before we got back to the hotel for the night, and stuck onto him even when we were nice. Went back down at some point ’cause the little brother forgot something in the car, and his co-​worker wasn’t back with our keys, so we had to try looking for that guy. I went to the car though, and they hadn’t even locked the car up — I obviously made sure I locked it up before we left the parking lot afterwards.
The valet guys we saw the following night was nice and extremely helpful though ’cause their parking lot was full, and they were only accepting new check-​ins. Told us where we could park for the night, didn’t have a bad attitude, and even made sure the front desk knew to reimburse us for the night since we couldn’t park there.
I know the coffee shop downstairs probably isn’t really associated with the hotel, but we liked that spot for the early morning too. Nice staff, and yummy coffee beverages.

Carpets in the rooms are filthy
First room the sink didn’t drain, mildew smell. The so called Suits are a joke!
Take a small room and divide it into 2 rooms and call it a suite!
In which lottery this place won it’s 3 ½ stars is beyond me.
The pictures on Expedia must have been from 50 yrs ago or photoshopped or both.
And let’s not forget the 35.- parking per night that is not mentioned anywhere.
In my book this is bate and switch of the worst kind. Great way to start a vacation

This is like no other Courtyard Marriot I’ve ever stayed at. This is more on par with a Motel 6. The walls are falling apart, someone else’s hair is on the walls of the shower. Everything looks like it was picked up at a flea market. The drapes are tattered, there is a bug chilling on the lamp next to my bed. The shower won’t drain. Besides that its a great location for beach and night life if they could get it together. Bring your own bug spray and possibly mold mask to enjoy this location.
Update — After contacting the front desk and discussing the situation with Tanya one of the managers, she corrected everything and made things right. We were offered another room and after inspecting it throughly we found it to have none of the issues. We’re very comfortable now and looking forward to a great stay.

This hotel is awful! Super dirty, has bugs and they don’t care! I brought it to their staffs attention, to their corporate’s attention.
The best they could do was give me 20,000 Marriott points! This hotel takes a minimum of 35,000 points to stay 1 night and I stayed for 5 nights! Feel like I got the short end of their customer service!

Great location. Short walk (few blocks) to beach, restaurants and shops. Also near some awesome local foodie spots. Hotel has a true Hawaii feel as the lobby is open air and laid out perfectly. Lots of seating and very clean.
Coffee café in lobby has acai bowls, coffee, pastries and all the coffee drinks you could want.
Reviews are spot on that the hallways need updating especially the carpet. Also, not many outlets in the room but here’s the tip. Unplug the coffee maker, and maybe a light to two and there are your outlets for recharging your devices.
Also, get a room higher up as these rooms seem to be the remodeled ones. Our room on the 17^th floor was remodeled and we loved it. Very small but still enough for us as we didn’t spend a lot of time in our room anyway. And no traffic noise. This hotel is close enough to the busy parts of Waikiki that there is always street noise.
Staff is awesome. Came here to work and needed my car very early. Had it ready for me and knew who I was. One note… it’s $ 33. a night to park so be prepared for that.
