Sea Sprite Ocean Front Motel & Apartments

Stayed here, vintage place, a bit of old smell, clean sheets, heat never really got warm-​snuggle! Right on the beach, no road to cross, fair price, did I say Right on the beach!!! Daiky, weekly and monthly rentals! I will go back!

Excellent location, friendly staff, but needs a renovation badly. My wife and i stayed here when we were still dating in the 90’s. Was an excellent stay then, but starting to look worn. Stayed here last month with the wife and kids, and the kids thought it was the greatest, but I just kept noticing how dirty it was. Yes, I know it’s a beach hotel, sand wasn’t the problem. The rugs seemed filthy, and you could feel parts of the floor sinking. The furniture hadn’t changed in 18 years. I would love to see the owner renovate, as I would love to stay here every time we come back, which will hopefully be more often now that the kids are old enough for the travel from the east coast.
Also have to agree with others posting before me… It’s 2015. Time to get air conditioning already.

Its a fun atmosphere and right on the ocean. The peice is affordable for so many. I had a great family vacation here a few years ago

The Sea Sprite has the best location. I stayed for a few days and had a room with a kitchen and a balcony (second floor). The view from the balcony is amazing… beach volleyball, the pier, sunsets! Yes… there is a boardwalk right in front of the motel, and yes there is noise from people on the boardwalk from early morning to late nights… but, to be able to go to sleep and wake up with the sound of waves crashing on the shore makes it worth it! The rooms are dates… but they were as clean as could be without a remodel. Everything worked and was functional. You could have easily slept 4 people comfortably in the place when you include the day bed and pull out mattress. —a few things. I WISH the kitchen actually had salt/​pepper shakers, some plates and silverware, and some coffee mugs. They have a sign up to say «NOT» to «TAKE ANYTHING» from the kitchen because they «INVENTORY» the kitchen after each guest… yet, other than a coffee maker and microwave… there was NOTHING anyone could take! Which makes it like every other motel/​hotel and they don’t put up a warning sign… Anyhow, I’d definitely return.

Nice location. but very noisy at night. No a/​c, and was very hot and uncomfortable trying to sleep… not much sleep at all. I should have requested my money back, the room was way below par. Scary, crusty and downright nasty. I would not recommend this to anyone. My advice would be to look at the room before you pay!

If there were 10 stars is give it 10. Location is better then any spot in the South Bay. Yes it’s old. Maybe even a relic but my family has been coming here for 55 years. I’ve been coming for 30. We stay here for a week every summer. This place feels like it’s a piece of our families. Kitchens in the room so you can cook and don’t have to over spend waiting out every night. Maintenance workers do a good job of something needs to be replaced. Designated parking is nice. Right by shops as well. Prime location. Now I’m bringing my kids here who enjoy it just as much as I did as a little one 30 years ago.

The view and location of the Sea Sprite was wonderful. It really couldn’t get much better than that. Unfortunately, with the nice location next to tons of restaurants and bars, you have loud and obnoxious people walking around up until 2 am. This place doesn’t have air conditioning, which wasn’t a problem because of the cool ocean breeze and large windows, but we also couldn’t shut the windows to block out the noise because we would get too hot. This isn’t a good place for a family who goes to bed early. You will be woken up a lot by yelling and people playing volleyball in the alley way.
The staff here is very friendly, though. They are very helpful and easy going.
The wifi did not work at all in our room towards the back of the building. The hallway to the room was really dirty with cigarette buds and stained carpets. The room was clean.
I did like this place. A large room, access to a pool, and right across the street from the beach. I just wish they would invest in air conditioning to block out noise at night and clean the hallways.

We stayed again this year January 17^th thru the 20^th! Trip was so nice. The staff were so friendly, the room was so nice! At night the sounds of the ocean is what we heard. All of the windows in our room had ocean views! ALL of them! I can’t wait to come back! The stay her makes you want to move here. If you are thinking about coming here, GO. It was such a romantic getaway for me and my wife.

Honestly, I usually do not feel comfortable staying in motels but the location is so awesome, the price is even better and the staff is fairly kind. I had a great experience the room was very clean. Not Sandy at all. The bathroom was like extra clean I really was suprised. We had a balcony with a great view. I will forsure rebook!

People may complain about how the rooms are not exactly updated, and the carpet is old, but hey it is a motel right?
The rooms are very roomy, lots of people can stay in there because they usually have a pull out sofa in addition to beds. They have coffee makers, microwaves, ovens, sink, and refrigerator. Awesome. Try to book a room with an ocean view, there’s nothing like waking up to an ocean and some friendly volleyball players !
The only downside to me was that there were no dark curtains in my room, so I needed an eye mask so the sunlight wouldn’t wake me up too early, as it gets pretty bright in the rooms in the mornings.

Location, location, location!!! It may not seem like much, but it was clean and comfortable. Plus it’s right on the strand! I’d stay here again for sure!

Don’t stay here. Cops were following me around for two days for no reason and then stopped me without cause and held me for 50 minutes. Not sure why Hermosa Beach is bent on harassing paying customers who stay at their hotels and eat at their restaurants?
I was completely sober and driving to a party safely at 10PM. The cops detained me and called a dog as I was leaving the hotel. They held me for 50 minutes on the street only to let me go in the end. Supposedly, I was stopped because I waited until I was exiting the tiny empty parking lot to turn on my lights. They did not stop me however, until two blocks later. The cops insisted they check all my luggage and they brought the dog out who scratched the outside of my rental up. The cop lied repeatedly about my rights and treated me like a criminal.
I will not be staying in the Sea Sprite or going to Hermosa ever again. I suggest you stay away if you don’t want to turn into the HBPD’s next unwilling victim.
Totally disgusting. This is what is wrong with America. Sea Sprite should take it up with the Mayor and the city council.

I love this place.
Such a great spot to spend time with friends/​loved ones. I stayed at the beach front bottom level of sea sprite to celebrate my 21^st birthday and had so much fun.
Next to the hotel is the hermosa strip of super fun bars and lounges.
My only complaint is that there are a lot of weirdo crack head drunk homeless people around. On one occasion I was eating a crêpe out front and a homeless man came up to the wall that separates the walk way and the hotel, reached his arm over and grabbed my crêpe off my plate! SO scary.
Another time, I was inside by the kitchen setting up food for my birthday celebration and a homeless man came up to the wall and said «can I come in» we kept saying no (he clearly was on drugs) he finally left when I called the cops. They also need to fix the locks on the bathrooms ! I’ve been coming for years and the bathroom locks never work!
Other then the weirdos this place is great! Sleep with the door locked for sure.

I typically notice that reviews are either really great or really bad. I hate to be one of those people, but I had a really bad experience that I need to share in the case it helps the business or future travelers.
I lived in the Southbay area for 3 years and have many Arizona friends that stayed at the Sea Sprite for vacation every year with great recommendations. The location is fantastic and I always wanted to stay there.
I moved to San Luis Obispo in August and scheduled my first trip to the area for my son’s visitation weekend with his father on ⁹⁄₂. I was super excited to book the Sea Sprite for my weekend away. When I made the reservation, I was first surprised that I couldn’t do it online. When I called to make the reservation, I was advised of the «Owner’s Policy». This policy requires all customers to mail a personal check in the amount of one night as a deposit for the reservation. I didn’t know that there was a business left on the planet that accepted paper checks. Aren’t CHECKS those things that people used back in the 80s & 90s to pay bills on time before their money was in the bank because of the processing time? But — that was OK — I really wanted to stay here and figured the inconvenience of going to the bank to order checks (at a cost), write a check, buy envelopes and drive to the post office to buy a stamp and mail it must be worth it. I got my mail out just in time to make it to Hermosa Beach in time for the 7-​day deposit deadline. I would have used my BofA BillPay service, but was concerned it would arrive late.
In the meantime, we planned the entire weekend around this location. On 9/​17, I called to confirm my reservation as I always do prior to traveling. I was told that my reservation was cancelled due to non-​receipt a deposit on ⁹⁄₁₀. I was not called or emailed about this cancellation, although the lady on the phone said an email was sent to me. The gal I spoke with was really nice. I could tell that she is accustomed to customers complaining about this ignorant «Owner Policy» that is obviously out of touch with reality. I was told that one room was available on the first night of my original reservation but not the second. This doesn’t help me at all as I will not be in the room from for most of the second day and there will be no way for me to move hotels or store our belongings considering our schedule.
Now, I have to spend more money to stop payment on the check and find another place to stay, which is far more expensive than the room I originally booked. We will also have to spend time changing our plans and budgeting for cancellation fees and taxi costs. The worst part is that relaxing weekend away, listening to the ocean, that I have needed for some time has been destroyed.
I want to thank the Sea Sprite «Owners Policy» for ruining our weekend. I know that the owners do not care about a single negative review as other customers will put up with the ancient policies to stay at this location.
My recommendation to the hotel ownership is to please join the modern times and behave in a way that is customer friendly. It will improve your business. I wish I could force you to be financially responsible for the inconvenience and added costs.
My recommendation to future customers is to be prepared for this «Owners Policy» and make back up plans.

I came to stay at the Sea Sprite this past weekend for my cousin’s wedding. She had booked a block of rooms for a discount of the already bargain prices. You can’t beat the location. Ocean front, walking distance to the action, seriously a steal at the prices they charge.
My room was clean, carpet seemed to be new and it was pretty spacious. If I was to have a complaint it would be that in the morning I was blinded when I went to the bathroom because the sun was so bright. WAAAA WAAA Whoa is me.
I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Retro is the new black. Haven’t ya heard?

Love this place. A little out dated, but it’s all about location. Right on the strand, beach is a minute walk. Located right by restaurants and bars, gets kind of loud on weekends at night. But great location for trying new places. Perfect for families who want to be right by the beach for a fun family time. Hotel itself is quite, and staff is really friendly.

The views from the rooms are amazing, but the rooms are pretty run down (I can only imagine the toll salt air takes on a building). The location can’t be beat with direct beach access and steps away from downtown Hermosa.

The Location is awesome! A few steps from the beach and less than a 5 min walk from the night scene of Hermosa! The room we rented had enough space, kitchen ready to use, everything was clean and a great price! Hope to come back again soon! And the Staff was awesome! super friendly :)

I think I am giving the Sea Sprite 1 extra star based on nostalgia alone.
This place is a Hermosa Beach staple, and Lord knows how long it’s been there. I used to stay here with my family during the summers from the late 70s to the late 80s. I hadn’t been since the summer of 1988 and my husband and kids and I took an impromptu trip last weekend. It’s still almost entirely the same as it was 22 years ago.
The Sea Sprite consists of a 3 story basic motel, a 2 bedroom beachhouse with a large oceanview porch steps from the strand, and larger apartment type units with full kitchens.
The rooms are really nothing to write home about, it’s the location that is key. In the heart of Hermosa nightlife, steps from the beach, steps from the 18 mile «strand» (bikers, skateboarders, rollerbladers, etc. whizzing by at all hours).
We had a good time. There were only a few drawbacks, that to be fair, I must mention. I don’t know what is up with their pool these days but there were huge floatation devices (big ducks, rafts, cubes, etc.) floating in every inch of the pool. My 5 year old daughter wanted to go in, but there were rowdy college students partying on all the rafts, drinks in hand, so it wasn’t appropriate. Not that big of a deal…
Also, the bed was like a rock, very uncomfortable. but again, not that big of a deal. You really can’t beat the location (and nostalgia) which is why I rated it 4 stars. Oh, the price is pretty good too for being beachfront!
