SpringHill Suites Hampton

The hotel: It is a Marriott property. So I have no qualms about it (and I am a Marriott Rewards member). I usually stay here if I attend an event nearby which is usually at the Hampton Coliseum.
Customer Service: This is where it gets fuzzy. My recent visit here was one that left a lot to be desired. I arrived right around 3:30 when check-​in begins. I stood at the desk waiting for a representative to assist me. No one was available. About 7 minutes into the wait, a lady came from somewhere and asked if I was being helped. I said not yet. She went behind a wall and said to someone else that I was out there waiting. What emerged from behind that wall was my biggest issue. The woman named Shalonda, LaShonda, Shawonda, La-​Sha-​something, came out chewing, with mayo on the side of her mouth. She asked for the norm, name, ID, and credit card. Once I was checked in; she failed to mention my room number and just handed me the room keys. Luckily for me, the room number was written inside the paper jacket. She proceeded back behind the wall, I guess to finish her mayonnaise filled meal.

Writing this review while I am still here because that is just how bad it is. Much like everyone else’s review… THE ROOMS ARE HORRIBLE! !! The bed is soft… but sheets are itchy and so wrinkled it looks like someone just climbed out of it before me. The couch is absolutely filthy. The carpet… not only do they not vacuum.. they apparently did not bother to EVER shampoo. Come on!!! My question for them…
Would you stay at this hotel yourself? !!! The blankets and towels all need to be replaced as they are extremely hard and run down. Asked for a new blanket as the one from the closet was so hard it was stuck in permanent fold!!! The replacement.. just as bad.
Needless to say… as I lay in this bed… scared to let body touch the sheets… I HAVE MADE RESERVATIONS FOR ANOTHER HOTEL AND WILL BE CHECKING OUT A DAY EARLY! Only staying tonight because kids have fallen asleep. Uuuggghhh

All that really needs to be said is… IT IS TIME FOR THE ROOMS TO BE RENOVATED! The lobby and meeting rooms have been renovated but the sleeping rooms are ridiculous! They aren’t just dated… they are run down! The carpet is through! The walls are torn up. Our room has hooks in the wall where artwork used to be. When I advised the front desk that we’d be checking out after one night and not staying the full four, they didn’t even bother to ask why. Just said okay. I’m laughing all the way to the Embassy Suites down the street!

Pros: decent breakfast, free parking and wifi, pool and whirlpool spa, conveniently located near restaurants such as Joes Crab Shack, Lonestar Steakhouse, etc. Walmart is down the block so good place to shop if you forget anything while traveling.
Cons: Hotel fixture is outdated and the room clock doesn’t work. Someone had cut the power cords from the clock and the hotel never replaced it. The cable TV signal is horrible. The TV freezes and at some point there’s no sound. The a/​c radiator doesn’t work and you can smell the burned rubber oder when turn on the radiator. The walls can use a new coat of paint as there’s dirty marks on each wall. The walls are paper thin. You can hear everything from your neighbors!

2.5 stars max. The hotel seems new’ish, my room was clean, and check in was quick and easy. The staff seemed nice but I really didn’t have any interaction with them beyond check in. The hotel is conveniently
However, if your looking for one of the higher end Marriott chain hotels… This is not one of them. Better than Motel 8, or a standard just off the highway hotel… But not fancy or luxurious. Just basic. No restaurant /​bar /​Starbucks in this hotel, but there are places to eat a short drive away.
There is pay-​per view movies in the room, which is always good. The selection was so-​so, mostly movies that you can get at home on «on demand».
Adequate hotel for a quick business trip. Look somewhere else if your looking to be pampered or trying to make an impression on that special someone.

Horrible. Loud party next door with cursing and smoking (thick smell in hallway) until wee hours of the morning. The front desk promised to «come up and talk to them» but if they did, it was ineffective. At one point it was if they were bowling next door. Have stayed in many Marriotts and NEVER had such a poor experience.

My friends and I every year come down to this hotel because of a local show that we go to see. Overall it’s not that bad. I wouldn’t say that is a five star Hotel but it will do for a few days only. There was one gentleman at the front desk that’s did everything in his power to accommodate us from extra towels too early check-​in and so on. He was a pleasure. But the other front desk staff was very nasty and didn’t want to help or be bothered. I called downstairs to the front desk to ask for extra pillows and this nasty lady told me to come down and get it. I heard a rumor that the cleaning ladies steal people stuff but I’m not too sure it never happened to me. What’s cool is that every morning is free breakfast there’s really not a great selection but there’s bagels rolls eggs muffins yogurt and this year it seems like they added a waffle maker. The ATM was out of service. The carpets were a little stained and the table desk light didn’t work. There is also a 24 Hour Business Ctr. where you could go online and print for free which is cool. Also throughout the whole hotel there is free Wi-​Fi which is also a great plus. Overall I would say it will do for only a few nights but if you’re staying for a business trip or more than a week I would find something better.

This hotel has more broken features than working features and the staff makes no apologies or efforts to make amends. The stars are only for the pleasant room space.
Pros: Nice spacious room and comfy furniture. Little kitchenette was perfect for a business traveler on a few nights stay. Front desk staff and morning breakfast staff was welcoming and friendly. Bathroom vanity was nice with plenty of space.
Cons: Hot tub didn’t work, pool looked filthy, TV didn’t work (simply no power) and despite my daily reports of this I did not have a working TV until my 3^rd night, A/​C sounded like a small jet engine every time it kicked on, noisy bathroom fan ran constantly and there was no switch to turn it off, no room service (the pizza flyer in the hotel guest guide had a non working phone).
Disappointed there wasn’t better customer service to respond to the issues with non-​working items and no attempt to make amends for broken amenities that are expected and even promoted on the hotel website. They never even apologized for the fact that so many expected/​advertised hotel features were dysfunctional!
And, yes, there were a few carpet stains that I would not consider significant enough to complain about on Unilocal,but when aggregated with the broken hot tub, filthy pool, broken tv, noisy room, broken room service, and lack of management concern for customer satisfaction; I’m complaining about the carpet stains too!
I will find another hotel for my next trip.

The reception area is clean and the staff were friendly when we arrived. At a glance our room seemed fine. Upon closer inspection there were visible stains on the carpet. On our first night I was ready to watch Scandal when suddenly the cable goes out. A maintenance man who did not appear to specialize in electronics, or anything else for that matter, came and turned the TV off and on about 20 times, then jiggled the cable intermittently. He eventually gave up. He was very friendly and kind enough to request that we be moved to the room across the hall. Well, the carpet in that room was even more of a mess. We checked out early the next morning. Get it together Springhill.

Room was nicely decorated and the bed was very comfortable. Wifi Internet was awful at 0.75Mbps download. The halogen vanity lights take time to warm up enough to be useful. I liked that the windows open a little to allow fresh air which is nice. This hotel is behind another hotel and was very quiet. I slept great.

As a frequent business/​pleasure traveler, I have stayed in a number of 1 to 5-​star hotels in the US and abroad. At one point, I practically lived in the Boston Harbor Hotel in Boston for 6 months. In comparison to other hotels I’ve stayed in, this one falls into the lower ranks.
I attended my Nephew’s graduation at Hampton University over the weekend. Due to its proximity to the school, Bass Pro Shops, and distance to Newport News (where my sister lives), I decided to stay here. After a 9 hour drive from NYC, we arrived at the hotel around 8:30 pm.
DISCLAIMER: I recently had 2 knee surgeries, so I requested an ADA room for the bathroom grab bars and shower seat. This review is based on that room only.
PROS:
–Good proximity to Hampton University, downtown area and shops. Close to freeways and highways.
–Front desk staff was very pleasant, both at check-​in and with subsequent phone calls.
–Maintenance person was very helpful.
–Housekeeping person was very helpful.
–Easy check-​in/​check-​out experience.
–No bed bugs
CONS:
–No luggage carts in entrance/​vestibule area.
–Non-​working light switches.
–Non-​Working telephone.
–Non-​working floor lamp.
–No Ironing board cover
–Broken Vents on the A/​C
–Stained/​Dirty Carpet
–Staple embedded in the Carpet
–Bent Sliding Door Railing frame/​Closet
–HVAC Access Panel in ceiling falling down
As previously mentioned, this review is based solely on the ADA room I stayed in and is not necessarily indicative of the other rooms in the hotel. If this is an isolated case, I urge management to pay attention to the details in the ADA room/​s. The safety of your disabled (and able-​bodied) guests should be a top priority. I did not feel safe in this room. Although my kids and I made it through unscathed and we have no plans to sue, I can’t say the same for your future guests. Since my sister lives in Newport News, I plan to visit the area again; however I highly doubt I will be staying in this hotel again.

Filthy room with fixtures falling off the walls, stained everything (walls, floor, linens) and a broken sofa. I usually try to stay at this brand of hotel… but I will never come back to this particular property

Walls paper thin, neighbors super loud, took hours to get an extra blanket, pillows and bedding were crappy thin small and lumpy, we will absolutely never stay here again.
We left 2 days early because we hated this hotel so much. They offered to reduce our rate and give us 15k points if we stayed for the rest of our vacation, but we opted for a more expensive hotel closer to Williamsburg in order to avoid having to stay at this hotel one more minute. .
Also, just a tip: if you are thinking of staying at this hotel because you want to save money on a Williamsburg hotel, think twice. The traffic on 64 from Williamsburg on a Saturday afternoon made this a 45 minute trip from Busch Gardens. It was too far and absolutely not worth it due to the absolute poor quality of the hotel.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The place is clean and comfortable. Not the worst, not the nicest but ok. Friendly service though our experience was a comedy of errors which may also be a hint for the owner/​manager to address. When we checked in we were giving keys that opened the door to a room that already had guests in it! A surprise for both families. We get another room and unfortunately the AC didn’t work and the maintenance man came up and said it was broke so they moved us yet to another room. A handicap room, where everything is very low for easy accessibility for folks in wheel chairs, well, I’m 6’2. If you are looking for an ok place, this is it. Breakfast is adequate.

Workout room: Great selection of machines, and much roomier than many hotels have — but the water jug and half of the dumbbells were missing, and there were no sanitary wipes for wiping down the machines. The water jug was especially annoying, as it had been removed and not replaced — so it wasn’t just that it had been emptied the night before and they hadn’t noticed yet.
The room needed maintenance — the door on the controls for the air conditioner was broken and just sitting on top, and one of the dials on the clock radio was missing.
The room seemed like it was trying to be a physically-​challenged/​accessible room (which I don’t need now, but have in the past), but failed. The space between one of the beds and the dresser was a tight squeeze without a wheelchair or crutches, and the toilet paper was across the bathroom from the toilet.
The curtains were nice blackout curtains, but without the second layer of translucent curtains that many hotels have, the tiny gap between them let in more light and reduced privacy.
Breakfast was meh, but at least included. All of the yogurt they had when I got there had aspertame in it, so not for me. The line for the waffle makers, which take about three minutes each, was more than ten people long. I’d rather have a stack of pre-​made waffles. The cream-​cheese was a no-​name brand, and they only had the full-​fat version. Most Marriotts I’ve been in lately have had Philadelphia, including low-​fat cream cheese; they usually have toppings other than no-​name syrup for the waffles; they generally have yogurt without aspertame. Not this one. The grits were OK though.
Wifi on the fourth floor had a lousy connection, gaining and losing connection during the night. They need to install a repeater or do a channel survey.
It had the feeling of what could have been a decent hotel — it was so close, but the things that were wrong were striking.

The staff was friendly and the check in and out were very smooth. The walls are thin. I could hear every word the woman above me was saying. (at 2am) The gap under the doors is 1.25 inches which let’s a lot of sound in from the hallway. The furniture was extremely cheep and not at all comfortable. The layout of the rooms are decent. The TV is viewable from the bed and the sofa area which was nice. The hvac system worked very well and had a digital thermostat to control the temperature was always comfortable. The layout of the bathroom is horrible. Very little natural light was available in the bathroom area. The toilet paper dispenser is way to far from the toilet. I am 6’1″ and my cheeks had to come off the seat to reach the toilet paper. The toilet paper was half gone when I got there. The free toiletries were cheap and smelled like cleaning products. The room had blood on the wall and did not feel extremely clean. The bed appeared clean and was comfortable. The restroom was clean. This place is not a dump at all but it’s definitely not anything to be impressed with.

This hotel did have a few good points, but not too many. It was reasonably clean, and the staff was fairly friendly. The room was an OK size, nothing special. One key design flaw– don’t install a towel bar in front of the sink. Being a guy, trying to lean over the sink and put my contacts in, the location of the towel bar was awkward and if you’re not careful, could be quite painful. Soundproofing could be greatly improved– you could hear the adjacent rooms clearly, and could everything in the corridor. Every time someone shut a door, it sounded like it was coming from your hotel room. And lastly, the free breakfast was just plain bad– cold scrambled eggs from a box, some brown looking mush stuff, grits, stale bagels/​muffins, and frozen butter. Breakfast can be saved however– the Cracker Barrel is within walking distance!

My mother got a room here for $ 50 a night, on Hotwire. Not bad for 3 people. When I walked into this Marriott, I had high expectations. It was clean, new, modern and just looked inviting.
Everything was great until I walked into the room and moved the coffee table out of the way so that I could pull the sofa bed out. The entire table was sticky and smelled of liquor. When I pulled out the bed and dressed it, I realized that the only blanket that was available for this bed was a pretty thin one. This is for a room that advertised to sleep 4 people (1 King bed and 1 sofa bed). I was cold that night, and there were no extra blankets to be had. That part really needs to be re-​thought.
Another thing is that the bathroom fan doesn’t turn off. Even with the bathroom door closed, you still hear a slight hum of the fan. Not very nice when you wake up in the middle of the night, cold, and want to get back to sleep.
Breakfast is good and included. The waffle iron works great, and the eggs that are served are good as well.
This hotel has such great potential. Just a little more attention to detail and I would have been a much happy camper. That said, it’s not horrible…

I loved this SpringHill, in part because it has something most SpringHills don’t: character. It didn’t look like its brethren, it looked like a nice, upscale hotel with hip, modern décor. The furnishings in the rooms are stylish and colorful, the carpet isn’t gross hotel carpet, you won’t see any busy floral prints, and the beds and pillows are particularly comfortable. The exercise room and pool are well-​maintained. The wireless internet is the fastest internet I’ve ever had the pleasure of using in a hotel, fast enough that during the week I was there I streamed half a season of Lost in high definition from ABC’s website with no problems. This may have something to do with the fact that it is a new hotel and had hardly any guests, but for whatever reason the internet was on par with what I have at home. Breakfast was ok, only worth it because it’s free (or already paid for, depending on how you look at it) and typical of a Marriott.
So why only 4 stars? Soundproofing. As in this hotel has none. If the neighbors opened their door, it sounded almost as if someone were opening my door. I could hear conversations in the hallway, I think I heard a woman, um, moaning one night, and from my bathroom I could hear whatever they were saying in the next room. Luckily the hotel was pretty empty so it didn’t matter much. However, if you’re a light sleeper you might want to pack earplugs or go somewhere else. Personally, if I ever have the misfortune of having to go back to Hampton, I will make a point of coming back to this SpringHill.
