Best pastries in town hands down. Their large variety of pastries will satisfy anybody’s sweet tooth. Their cannolis and red velvet cupcakes are incredible and I recommend them to any visitor. Every year I was in college my mother ordered my birthday cake from Harpers and every year it’s executed beautifully and was delicious. This is a very reasonably priced place owned by a very cute old couple who is very friendly. Funny story actually my friend and I went in there to pick up some cupcakes and some old women were in there hitting on my friend and me asking if we need girlfriends. I tell this story because these people are friendly and funny which is always a good combination. If you are looking for a pastry place to cater a party Harpers is a great choice. They have catered my events in the past and every time I get great reviews from my guests. You can just tell they put their heart and soul into their deserts and I promise you will not be unsatisfied with any pastry you choose.

Last week, my Fiancée and I required a baguette to have with our ravioli. I decided I’d pay a visit to Harper’s for the first time. Upon entering, I noted that the interior looked nice and inviting in contrast to the environment outside. I looked at the selection of pastries, cookies and cakes before picking up a baguette. I noticed there wasn’t much selection at all and allow me to scratch cakes out because there weren’t any. The pastries were so dry and stale in appearance they looked like they were fished out from a dumpster behind a diner. There were smiley face cookies but they were so sloppily done that they looked like stroke victims. That depressed me, so I asked the girl at the counter for a baguette. The price was right and I brought it home. When I took the baguette out of the bag, my fiancée asked me if it was made out of bagel dough. This baguette was literally a long, crispy bagel. When we tried it, in every aspect, except for form it was a bagel. It was a good bagel, but it was an awful baguette. We weren’t sure if we were supposed to put pats of butter on it or cream cheese… Unfortunately, Harper’s gets a huge«pass» for me. I’m all about supporting long established, independently owned businesses but the quality just doesn’t fly.

Harper’s has been around for as long as I can remember. and I’m not sure it’s ever improved. Although it’s pretty homey inside, the owners are kind and generally provide good service, and it smells amazing(even when driving by), overall not your best bakery bet in Warren County. Bagels are mediocre. I always figured that if you’re going to sell bagels in New Jersey, they better be stellar, but these guys are still an institution in H-town so go figure. When I was little, I remember wanting to drive the extra 15 mins to Holy Bagel by Shoprite in Mansfield to get better bagels. Pastries/cookies are also mediocre. not too flavorful and not moist from what I remember. Biggest downfall? the hours. They’re only open until like 2pm on Sunday which, if you live anywhere NOT in the immediate area of Hackettstown(which is the majority of Warren/Morris County), is a pain. I can’t remember their exact hours, but when I investigate further, I’ll let you know. Oh, Harper’s — I wait for the day that you reach your full potential!
