Great sushi restaurant near St. John’s. Their service is great and they give you 20% off of sushi rolls as well. AND they are very generous with their sushi rolls. On top of that, they give a complimentary sweet potato roll: D How awesome!

Excellent sushi and katsu. Everything was fresh tasting from the fish and rice to the crunchies and ginger. The shrimp katsu was still delicious even when it was reheated in the toaster oven hours later.

If I could keep on writing positive updates on Umi Sushi on Unilocal,I sure would do it. My husband, Ben, and I have been ordering from Umi Sushi for the past 2 years and we have grown to love it more and more. In terms of food, my husband and I love to order their dinner boxes, which is super delicious and fulfilling. The box comes with your choice of a main course, such as chicken teriyaki, beef negimaki, salmon teriyaki or etc. It contains the standard sushi rice, 8-piece California rolls, and 2-piece gyoza. It also comes with a side salad and miso soup as well. The box is definitely enough to satisfy our tummies. Eventually I started ordering the New Mango Roll, which has become my ultimate favorite roll in Umi Sushi. A piece of salmon sashimi wrapped in sushi rice, seaweed, and mango… Oh my, I’m drooling already! Then recently, I’ve fallen in love with their Avocado Salad and Sashimi, both of which are so good and very fresh! The Avocado salad is not only yummy but I just love the presentation and layout of the thin slices of avocado placed so elegantly on top of the lettuce.(Check it out in my posted pics.) In addition, the delicate and delectable sashimi melts right in your mouth like butter. Either sit-in or order take-out, we are always treated with the utmost respect. Their generosity is out of this world. Not only do we always get a free Yam Sushi Roll with our order but sometimes they would treat us an extra complementary soup or salad or even an order of edemame. Some would call Umi Sushi a hole-in-the-wall, and I agree because it is a petite place in the middle of Fresh Meadows, but this hole-in-the-wall is sure a hidden gem that shines brightly in our eyes. Umi Sushi is our go-to spot to get our dinner box, sushi, and sashimi FIX. Every time we have this craving, we immediately think of Umi Sushi. Thanks Umi Sushi for continuing to keep up with the good food and service! My husband and I will always be your #1 fans!

This has become our go to place for sushi. We get it delivered very often. They have a good lunch special and their prices are great. The rolls are on the small side but always taste fresh. Their crunchy yellowtail is wonderful!

Very good fresh sushi. I have had the chirashi twice and both times it has been excellent with very fresh fish. The salmon was bright orange/pink color which looked wild caught(though I could be wrong here). It tasted wonderful. I am a very picky eater when it comes to sushi. I have about 10 places close by to where I live and they are all disgusting. This is the closest thing I have encountered to good edible sushi in all of Queens. I will return and very happy they deliver to me. Good prices too!

For a local sushi restaurant, it’s as good as it gets. It’s a small restaurant with rather long wait(depending on when you go, of course), but awesome service and food that doesn’t hurt the wallet. Regular and special rolls are fairly priced, and comparable to higher end places. I am not really a sushi fan(maybe I should stop saying that since I have eating more sushi than I should), but I would definitely consider this place next time I get dragged out for sushi. I did, however, like the special rolls more than the regular ones.

It’s right by St. John’s so it definitely caters to students and their college lifestyle. I always come here for the lunch special because it’s most affordable — it’s $ 8.50 before tax for 2 rolls or you can get a bento box. It definitely beats eating on campus. The service is always great but if you come during the lunch hour rush — be prepared to wait for a table and longer service. The food alway tasted fresh to me, they even throw in a free sweet potato roll every time! They do give 20% off their special rolls. At first I was hesitant thinking that it was a trick or maybe some day-old fish but fortunately, it still tasted fresh! Overall, I love coming here to satisfy my sushi cravings or when I get tired of eating the food on campus and need a change of pace!

Just a bit off of St. John’s U, is this wonderful quaint sushi place. It’s a lovely place with mellow interior colors and warm accents. Service was prompt and a free roll with our meal was a plus. The dinner box specials are great as they are tasty and filling. My wife and I would definitely come back to this gem. Come hungry, leave satisfied.

This place is great! I’m a big sushi freak and this place definitely did not disappoint. I ordered the sushi and sashimi combo. It was so fresh and there were so many pieces! My boyfriend ordered the bento box with teriyaki shrimp and he loved it. They gave us a sweet potato roll on the house and it was delicious! The place is small and gets packed fast so make sure you go early if you don’t want to wait. I highly recommend this place!

Wow, pretty good! A friend and I stopped in here for dinner and the place was popping. The staff members are so sweet. They weren’t intrusive at all, and very accommodating. It’s definitely the service here that deserves this 4 star rating. We ordered the 24 piece sushi/sashimi showboat combo, the salmon teriyaki, and one of their rolls called the Honey River. For a casual sushi house, I really enjoyed their Honey River. Super tasty as well as the salmon. The showboat was alright, I enjoyed the sashimi more to be honest. It’s a huge boat with plenty of food for two people. We didn’t get a complimentary scoop of green tea ice cream(we had to put that on our bill, sadface), but the 20% off your entire bill was really nice! They must’ve opened up recently, so I would take advantage of that STAT.

I ordered take out and got: Spicy Girl Roll and Salmon Teriyaki Dinner Box. The bill came to $ 25. It came with the Miso Soup and salad. The Spicy Girl Roll was pretty good. I’d order that again. The Salmon Teriyaki was pretty good too. I think the fish was a little over cooked. Their teriyaki glaze was right on. Their free sweet potato roll was… well I could of done without that. Nice gesture though… The miso soup was ok too not the best could use a little more… um-f… Plan to try a few more things in the future…

The miso soup was good and so was the honey river roll. Clean and quaint but great for a quick outing with a friend or date.

Pretty good sushi place next to st. john’s. I ordered delivery and it was really fast. Another plus is that you get more than you pay for. I think this place is the best sushi place out of sushi places near sju

We went there for lunch, but we did not order the lunch special because they have 20 percent discount that does not include lunch special. We order 6 special Roll. They compliment us with miso soup. Special Roll are huge. What did we order? 1. Naruto 2. Bay Ridge 3. Scorpion 4. Something with Kiwi on top. I think is Kiwi 5. Yoshi 6. Volcano service is pretty good, the reason i gave 3 stars is they don’t have that many sauce, most of the roll have spicy mayo and eel sauce. And the tempura is different. But we will come back, recommended. Keep up the work!

I always get deliveries from Umi because it’s so convenient but this was the first time I actually sat and had dinner there. The staff is always so friendly and attentive. The sushi is always delicious and fresh and they’re very quick. We started off with the shumai which is always good as well as miso soup on the house. For entrees we ordered the sweet potato and mango roll, summer roll, rock n’ roll and the izumi(or something like that) roll, all were delicious. And after our meal we received a free sweet potato roll, which never disappoints considering they also send a free one every time we get a delivery. Love this place and will keep ordering my sushi from here. Did I mention it’s super affordable ??? Well it is !

New favorite sushi spot. Great prices. Great sushi. Great food. Great service. Great variety. Oh Umi, you’ve stole my heart away from Sushi Bell, my former local love. I frequented sushi bell mainly due to its prices of cheap rolls. Fish was fresh but like you’ll see in my review of sushi bell, it’s very #basic. They don’t have a lot of variety in their menu, even with their recent renovation of the place and the menu. Sushi bell went up in prices recently; service was slower as they got more popular. Rolls didn’t provide a lot of fish. My cousin suggested I tried his favorite sushi spot, Umi and I haven’t looked back since. Okay so I’ll stop dwelling on why I left sushi bell and instead now focus on why I love Umi! The rolls are substantially filling, their variety of rolls taste very good, fish taste fresh, they have other hot foods that other Unilocalers have said was good, and prices are reasonably cheap(20% off all sushi — dine in only). The outstanding thing they do is their service though, which pushed my review to 5 stars. They usually give a free roll(sweet potato tempura) and really care for their customers. It seems like they try really hard to make it a good experience for their customers. Plus they have a TV in the middle which usually has the local sport team game playing. And they deliver! Favorite rolls so far(trying to make our way through all the rolls on the menu): honey river roll, naruto, snow maid, golden dragon, Fuji roll, Angel roll, King eel roll, and gentleman roll.

Solid 3 star sushi place for the area which lacks good Japanese food. — Service here is always fantastic, if you order sushi you will always get a complimentary roll and miso soup which is always welcome. 20 percent off all sushi is also a nice thing to do for costumers even though its a little fishy to me. Pun intended. I feel like places that discount sushi leads to questions about the freshness of the fish? Why are they giving me sushi for this cheap? What’s wrong with it? They can’t just be this nice… — The prices even BEFORE discounts are very reasonable and portion sizes are huge. That being said, a place can’t rely only on service and pricing because every time I’ve come here the rolls are drowning in sauce. I feel like most of the special rolls are deep fried and piled with spicy mayo and miso. This is why you can never tell if the fish is fresh or not. The overuse of these sauces just leaves me feeling sickly and I hate that because otherwise the rolls would be MUCH improved. You know when certain rolls taste good at first and then after a few bites you can’t stomach it anymore? There is just something off with most of their«special rolls». I would advise sticking with more traditional or simple options if you want to enjoy your experience here and take advantage of the discount they offer.
Not a place to go out of your way for but I guess STJ students don’t have that many options in the area either.

I really enjoyed my dinner here last time! The service is great, they are constantly checking on you without being too all up in your face. It was very busy on a weekday night and there were constant orders through the phone and people coming in and waiting. For appetizers we got fried soft shell crab and kani salad. I really enjoyed the kani salad and the fried soft shell crab was not bad. I got a sushi combo that came with sashimi and a california roll, which I substituted for a spicy salmon roll which was SO good! It sounds so simple but it was definitely the best spicy salmon roll I’ve had and I eat a lot of sushi. The sashimi tasted fresh, which is the most important thing about sashimi and my tastebuds were super happy. We also got fish katsu, which was tasty as well! We ordered the volcano roll, which was baked kani on top of california roll, the baked kani was soooooo yummy and I’ve never tasted a roll like that. It had a sweet taste to it, possibly teriyaki sauce. It is a popular roll and I know why, definitely order that if you decide to try this place! We enjoyed everything we got :) They also gave us a complimentary sweet potato roll, I didn’t eat it because I don’t like sweet potato(and because I was so full I couldn’t move) but my parents said it was good!

The staff is absolutely amazing. They are attentive and made sure everything was right. My tea cup was never left empty. My plates were switched to clean ones multiple times. We were given free rolls and free octopus sampler. They switched the channel to the Mets game for me. Gave us 20% off sushi Sushi portions were generous and pretty fresh. Got the sushi regular and a few special rolls. The texture of the spicy salmon is just perfect. Overall happy with the food and even more happy with the staff. Can’t believe it took me so long to try this.
