History

Established in 1979.

We are a small family-owned, family-run business in an industry dominated by large, often multi-national, firms. Instead of mining, we recycle. Instead of building large regional asphalt plants, we focus on small boutique asphalt facilities designed to serve only the surrounding communities using recycled materials. We offer a proven, cost-effective approach of serving a community’s asphalt needs while keeping tax revenues and savings locally. Our approach reduces truck traffic on local streets and freeways, while providing the highest quality, environmentally friendly product.

We say what we do, and we do what we say. We value personal relationships and community service. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of efficiency, cleanliness and fair dealing.

Meet the Business Owner

George W.

Business Owner

George Weir got his start in the asphalt business after graduating from San Diego State University. He bought a pickup from his father and would buy asphalt from the local plant on Tulip Street, where a few of Weir’s businesses are now based. Weir would drive «around town in my pickup with a ton or two of asphalt, selling my wares, offering to fill potholes for 20 bucks.»

It’s clear that Weir inherited his entrepreneurial spirit from his father, a teacher, who would supplement his income by seal-coating driveways, with 14-year-old George tagging along.

Now, Weir has seven Escondido-based businesses, among them Escondido Sand & Gravel, Escondido Asphalt, Inc., a quarry, an organic orange orchard, and the namesake George Weir Asphalt Construction.

Weir credits his younger brother, Mark — his business partner since 1982 — for much of his success. «My brother is very smart. He’s the one who makes things happen.»
