I had no idea this pier was named after Pat Auletta. Mr. Auletta was known as the «Mayor of Coney Island» and was an advocate for the redevelopment of Coney Island after the 1960s.
This pier is really a symbol of Coney Island’s resilience. Over its 100+ year history, it was destroyed five times — by either storm or fire. The last disaster was from Hurricane Sandy as the pier lost many wooden log supports. So it was once again rebuilt. This latest pier is much nicer than the last: more seating, a lounge area shaped like a wave and a shade structure.
Most visitors come during the summer. I personally like the Fall/​Winter months when its much less crowded.
