The American Can Lofts

I referred a friend to move here, and after reading the reviews, he was somewhat concerned, particularly about the above review by Jim.
To dispel this, I can attest that this place was one of the best places I have ever lived, and never had ANY issues with management.
Other than a few issues with mechanical systems, like the elevators stopped working for a few days, and the fire alarms went off a lot the first year. But other than those, there really weren’t any issues that were a deal breaker. One time my ceiling started leaking and it was fixed the following morning. It was also kind of expensive to heat, but 20′ ceilings will do that to you.
I was among the first residents to move in, living there for over 2 years. I moved because I wanted to be closer to my office; however, I look back at the $ 900 /​month I paid and realize how great of a deal it was. The building is safe, everything is new, the neighbors are all friendly, and because it is a little pricer, all pretty much working professionals of an eclectic mix.
It also was quite remarkable how much the other residents cared about the building, something that’s particularly evident even in the negative review, as why would anyone hold that much anger towards a place (or person) if it wasn’t something they cared about?
Only thing that really sticks out in my mind that was negative, was an issue with people not picking up after their pets, but other residents just took care of it if the grounds crew didn’t get to it first. Either way, that wasn’t something that reflected on the property as a whole, it was isolated to fellow residents.
I do recall the «scene» that unfolded with the negative reviewer above on the Faebook page, and am largely not surprised they still hold animosity towards the management.
As you can clearly tell, his review is completely unsubstantiated, it’s an absolute attack loaded with a bunch of tortious claims. It is just one person who clearly lives a particularly unsuccessful life to leave such a horrible attack on a public forum, on a computer ha!
The line «in a neighborhood like Northside,» is perhaps my favorite part, as it vividly conjures up the memories of this particular reviewers staunch elitism of the Northside neighborhood. Which ironically, is in total juxtaposition to the whole cultural vibe of the neighborhood. I lived here from the time I was 5 until I was 13, and again for 2 years in my 20s, my mother lives in this community now, so I can honestly say I am very pleased with the direction the neighborhood is heading.
I would totally suggest living here if you want a nice place, with a friendly staff who will go out of their way to help you– fix stuff, hold packages (this is a favor to you, not a requirement of their duties), help you carry groceries, suggest a restaurant, pretty much whatever.
However, as with any situation in life, you’ll be well taken care of provided you’re not rude, pay your rent on time, and don’t refer to the manager as a strumpet, or something else that rhymes with ramp and runt.

Two years ago I was photographing the American Can factory when it was just rusted I-​beams and broken windows. I am thrilled to see this historic building be transformed into something new: beautiful lofts for the Northside community.
The renovated American Can reminds me of the dorms at university, with a giant common area complete with sofas, television, and a kitchenette in the lobby. The building itself is one of the most secure I’ve seen: gated parking garage, access card entrance and access card for the elevator.
The industrial look of the old factory can been seen throughout: wooden can molds salvaged from the processing bay have now been cleaned up, painted, and used to create huge decorative murals in the hallway. Large pipes than ran vertically floor-​to-​floor have been painted to match the walls, but create a charming alcove in the loft area: a perfect place to put a bed. The living areas have polished concrete floors and the iron stairwells give the space a vintage industrial feel. With a huge walk-​in closet, spacious bathroom, floor-​to-​ceiling windows with a view, new appliances, dishwasher, and cabinetry, the American Can Lofts are the perfect place for Cincinnati urbanites.
Located just a short walk from the main street of Northside, residents have a variety of local eating and shopping options, including an awesome music store and a community grocery store.
Additionally, the Lofts have two huge bays which once housed the canning machines. These areas have been used for parties, art exhibits, and a pop-​up shopping fair… or whatever else you can imagine. It seems like something is always going on at the Lofts!

So you’ve probably seen the American Can building … but what state it was in depends on how old you are. The building was actually the largest aluminum can manufacturer in the U.S. from 1921 to 1961 — a giant factory.
Then it closed and went to hell. In the decades since, this building has lain abandoned, falling apart. You know, it’s the giant structure across the street from Take the Cake (but way, way way down the street.) It was a gated eyesore in Northside for a long time.
But no longer! Now, a company has come in and renovated and remodeled the entire place, turning them into beautiful loft apartments. My god, some of them are really pretty too, and cheap (I think I saw the smallest being rented out for about $ 550 a month.) They’re mostly all filled now, though, but it’s always worth it to give a call.
What I like better though is the building as an event space. There are two giant bays where the factory machines used to be, and they’re as raw as it gets — lots of space, lots of windows, white walls, go nuts. You could do anything in here: throw a giant shopping bazaar (like they did with the City Flea), install giant art projects (which they are doing now), hold parties, whatever. It’s open and awesome.
I am really glad that a company stepped up (with the help of loans and grants of course) to turn this building into something. Too long it sadly sat there, waiting for the right hand to come along. I’m very glad it finally did.
