This is the only place I’ll get my hair cut from now on.
I started coming in June to see Jay Jay and haven’t seen anyone for my monthly cut since.
The atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming, the price is decent and cut is quality and thoughtful.
I feel like I’ve spent my whole life in one-​night-​stand type relationships with my hair stylists and barbers, that has honestly changed since I first got cut my Jay Jay at Menz Room.

I had a terrible haircut from another place and have been in recovery for the last month growing it out. I just moved to chicago and I’m so glad I found the Menz Room right away. David cut my hair and did an amazing job! My hair looks completely different but I absolutely love it. Everyone there was really friendly. Christian is a great communicator and gave me exactly the hair cut I wanted, fit directly to my hair and my face.
They also offer complementary relining between cuts, which I think is a great service.

Went in on hopes of fixing a tragic cut my 5yr old son received at Hair Cuttery (on Southport-Don’t do it) and can’t remember the girls name but she did an amazing job! This took major skill as my son’s hair was already on the shorter side and very choppy. Place is cool in a grungy type of way. We will definitely be back!

I’ve walked by this place dozen upon dozens of times. Never given it a lot of thought. The name always seemed a little cheesy to me. But what is the old saying, «Never judge a book by its cover.» This place is an absolute gem. From the minute I walked in to the moment I left I felt invited and welcomed. Everyone was happy friendly and smiling. Even the other customers were talkative and friendly. It felt more like people relaxing at a bar more than strangers getting their haircut by other strangers. I’m not picky when it comes to my hair, but Erin did a great job. I love this new look she gave me. I’ve been looking for a new place to get my haircut this place met every single one of my needs. A warm inviting and friendly staff. A relaxed atmosphere. Most important of all a great haircut. I will definitely be back!

This place is AMAZING. I came in with a literal disgusting, frizzy head of hair. Jay, my stylist, turned me into a human. Plus, I got my very thick, long hair cut, colored, blow dried, and flat ironed for well less than $ 100. You will not find this quality for this money anywhere in the area. Don’t be deceived by their name; this place caters to women’s hair too. I cannot say enough good about this place. It’s easy to find free parking before 6, or there is metered parking right outside the door. I will never let anyone else touch my hair again. If you want a magician with scissors, go to Jay at the Menz Room.

What can I say, I love this place! I’ve had my haircut at many places in the neighborhood but always end up coming back here. You can’t beat the amount of style you get for the price and hands down they give the best fades.

I have struggled to find at least a decent place to get my hair cut at since moving to Chicago. I was recommended this place by a friend and what a great recommendation it was. This is definitely my go to spot with them not only shelling out great haircuts but are so personable and knowledgeable as well.

Years after Leslie sold the business and The Menz Room had re-​opened with a new owner, I figured I would give them a try. A good friend of mine had suggested a stylist he had been with for many, many years and they just so happened to be at this particular salon. After setting foot into the salon after many years, it was a familiar yet oddly different environment. Needless to say my first haircut with my stylist was spectacular so I booked another appointment.
As I continued on with my stylist, seeing as they were doing a brilliant job, I did notice one thing that was a bit off. The atmosphere the clientele brought. Back when Leslie was operating the salon the word «pretentious» never popped into my head as it seemed most, if not all, the clients were fairly down to earth and/​or quiet. With each additional visit I encountered more and more attitude and less and less friendly banter between clients/​employees that I came to know and appreciate. Alas, Boystown had successfully invaded. Please note: this by no way reflects the staff as they were all delightful.
After an enjoyable stay with The Menz Room I decided to take my business to another local barber. Seeing as I just need a simple haircut without all the frills and out of this world, trendy hair designs I felt this was the most appropriate move. As a reminder, I want my readers to know that this review did not reflect the demeanor or the staff. For the most part, they appeared to be friendly and semi-​genuinely interested in what I had to say. It all comes down to your hairstyling needs and atmosphere… do you feel more comfortable in a regular, down to earth barber or in a salon that has your typical Boystown pretentiousness for customers (of which, both places do a great job on your hair)? You can only answer that!

I finally found an incredible place!!! I’ve been going to another salon in the neighborhood for nearly 7 years until recently. My normal stylist was not available and I needed a haircut desperately. So I gave the Mens Room a shot. I was partnered with Christian. All I can say is WOW. Christian is amazing! I’d been trying to modify my cut for over a year but my previous stylist just couldn’t get it right. So I took a risk with Christian and I couldn’t be more satisfied and excited. I walked out feeling refreshed and most importantly sexy. I’ve received so many compliments from that day. Christian, you have my hair at hello!!!

2^nd time I’ve been there and love going to a place where everyone is genuinely interested in knowing you. First time Jay touched me up a bit (several months ago) and this most recent time Christian took care of me.
Again just a little trim and shape up as I’m growing my hair out. But he told me hard advice which I completely appreciate from someone. It means they know what they’re doing. And my hair looks fabulous now.

Chris Meng who works at the The Menz Room is incredible. I was extremely nervous about trusting anyone to style my hair for my wedding until I found him. I have long blonde locks and I wanted a very specific look for my special day. I felt like I couldn’t find a quality hairdresser until I started working with Chris. He looked at every photo and took my vision and perfected it! Honestly, he made all my worries disappear and made the whole experience wonderful. He is super friendly, hysterical and has a heart of gold. I would recommend Chris to absolutely EVERYONE. Thank you Chris!!! You are my Hair God!!!

The Menz Room is not just for men! I have friends that were raving about the remodel and great atmosphere, so I decided to give it a whirl.
In a word: AMAZING!
I was greeted by enthusiastic, friendly faces. My stylist was Christian and he was the most charming, happy go lucky, stylist I’ve ever had! He had me cracking up the whole time. I had a new cut, color with highlights and style. The works! Worth every penny!
I will definitely be returning, in fact, I’ve already booked my next appointment 6 weeks from now, with my new friend Christian!

I am a regular at The Menz Room and have been coming for over a year now. I started with No Hair and was working towards growing it out for the very first time. I was mad nervous at first but was coached the entire way by the owner, David. I am so thankful that I gave him permission and freedom to work my hairstyle as I would have never been able to pull it off on my own or at a local quick cuts joint.
If your looking for a professional and fun Salon-​Barber Shop, The Menz Room is your spot!
Let me tell you why:
1. When I return to the salon I am always greeted with happy smiles and intriguing dialog from and with all the stylist. I feel like they’ve become a part of my family– I actually see them more than my blood family lol. I know whats going on in their personal lives and they do mine. I first learned about one of my favorite local restaurants while getting my hair cut at the Salon (Wood on Halsted in case your wondering). This Salon is hip and modern.
2. My hair cuts and styles are always on f*ckin point! If your looking for a low to mid-​razor fade, Certified Barber Will is your guy. He’s a laid back cool guy that is precise and detailed with all of his cuts/​clients.
If your looking for a fun blowout, color, cut or style– Erin and Christian are your people! I’ve been cut by both of them and can vouch for their professionalism, skill and wonderful personalities.
*Despite what Nathan previously wrote, Christian is gentle, smooth, personable and quite talkative.
If you haven’t already heard, David can do it all so you can reach out to him with all of your hairstyle needs. I applaud him for his tight fades and overall hairstyle recommendations.
3. The Salon is a fun place to visit. I get an escape from the responsibilities of work and life once a week when I visit. They are always flexible with scheduling and are prompt with starting your appointment on time– If you ever have to wait you can enjoy a cold beverage and the pleasure of reading the latest hip magazines, all on them. I often go early so I can chill with them before my cut. This is the way a Salon-​Barber Shop should be!
Pay them a visit and find out for yourself!

It being the new year, I figured I’d try a new place to get my haircut in Chicago despite having a very good stylist at Chicago Male Salon. So I research the reviews and find that David is supposed to be really solid. Ok, make the appointment.
I arrived about an hour early because I totally miscalculated how long it would take me in transit and when I walk in the door, no greeting, no hello, nothing. Awkward number 1. After sitting for several minutes, David did ask who I was and once he realized that I was two people after his current client because I was early, he suggested I go ahead with Christian who was woofing down his lunch in his chair. David assured me he was good and unfortunately I agreed. Definitely a mistake.
Christian was very rough, quick, and uninterested in what I had to say during the consultation. To be fair, I gave a few problems I had and asked for whatever he thought would look good accordingly. This was followed by a very rough and very uncomfortable attack with his razor. After that he did the cut very rushed and didn’t say a word (which I was cool with because honestly small chat when someone is cutting your hair is awkward at times) We finished up, and I put on my glasses and he showed me the back very briefly, and tadaa, very mediocre. I find it very very difficult to express dislike for bad haircuts in person to the artist who still wields a sharp object, and I knowing that his next client was there, I knew there was little hope of rectifying the back.
I got home to take a closer look at the damage: the back of my head looks like some sort of bushy tailed woodland creature. My sideburns were much much to long and cut all of the same line rather than being properly buzzed (its hard to describe). So I take care of my sideburns with my own razor and then start to notice GOBS of hair that completely missed the razor. I suspect its because he did it so rapidly, but honestly I had/​have several chunks here and there. To top it off the hair at the bottom of my neck is literally as long as when I went it and was curling weirdly. I really cant explain it, but it looks horrid. So I had to struggle to fix that too.
I really had hope for this place after all of the good reviews. Granted this one is for Christian, but still I was thoroughly disappointed. I will definitely not be back. To top it off, when using their restroom, I noticed a DVD of Tabatha Takes Over. Cute. Maybe they should actually watch it and internalize some of the things she suggests to improve their client experience. For $ 25 I was more than unhappy. I’m sorry I ditched Guilhermo at Chicago Male Salon for this. My rec is try him instead of this place.

The Menz Room is my favorite salon, period. After moving to San Francisco this fall, I can’t even begin to explain how much I miss it. I’ve been getting my hair cut by David LaSalle since I was a jobless college student; my mom paid for one of my first haircuts from him! Now after almost 5 years, I can’t imagine going to anyone else. For the price and location, it is simply unbeatable.
David and his staff provide more than just haircuts. They want you to know your hair just as well as they do. Whether it’s suggesting products to recreate your style or educating you about the science of your hair, the staff at The Menz Room cares about you and your hair. This isn’t a SuperCuts or Hair Cuttery affair, which is basically the equivalent of sticking your head through a block of wood and letting someone take the clippers to it. The Menz Room listens, but also takes initiative to style you progressively fashionable.
They cut hair for men, women, and provide waxing services (Erin did a fantastic job at touching my eyebrows up!). It feels good to support a local business that is so passionate about what they do.

Today was my first time to The Menz Room and I will definitely be going back. Very relaxed and welcoming environment. Very reasonably priced for haircuts in Chicago. Hairstylist will ask you several times if you like the look as they are cutting your hair. Already have my next appointment booked. Very happy that I made the change and started coming here.

Granted, I don’t get some layered multi-​faceted Ryan Goslin thing, my hair is pretty straightforward, but David does a better job than both the $ 45 and $ 15 places. The only thing that would make this better would be if they did the hot foam straight-​razor back-​of-​the-​neck thing, but that has apparently gone the way of the unicorn and pop stars who aren’t waste-​of-​space dbags.
Bottom line: I ain’t goin’ anywhere else until I stop needing haircuts altogether.

This business needs to get its priorities straight and not make me wait 30 minutes when I scheduled an appointment over the phone. I don’t care about the beer, I don’t care who cuts my hair, but I definitely care about you making me wait while a person with a later appointment and a walk-​in begin getting their hair cut before me. First time I ever walked out of a place, never thought I would get to that point.
I scheduled an appt for 3:30 and for lord knows why, the person who took my call put somebody’s name under my cut, as if only that person could cut it. This is my second time here and I don’t know anyone there, so I can’t fathom why this guy would do that since I never requested it, pretty sure my stylist was Will. Like I said before, I don’t care about who cuts my hair since it was my second time there. So I walk into the place and begin waiting while one of the stylists sat on the chair on her phone. She was nice enough, but totally ignored me when Will said she can begin cutting my hair. Funny part is, she was waiting for my roommate who scheduled an appt at 3:45, haha.
My roommate walks in around 3:40 and she begins cutting his hair. OK, makes no sense, but whatever (I’m assuming someone took his call and assigned her name under his cut?). The best part was when someone who didn’t even schedule an appt walk in. So Will is busy with his cut, the lady stylist began hers, and I think the other guy (someone with a B) just finished some other guys cut. Great, should be my turn, right? Ha nope, he begins cutting this new guys hair who came in like 15 minutes after I did.
I end up walking out 30 minutes later. I didn’t care if Will was finishing up (apparently 5 minutes after I left), this was ridiculous. Apparently Will said, «What’s his f***ing problem» when I said this is a waste of time and left, great personality there buddy!
Terrible business model — no one cares about being offered a beer if you can’t take the first customer. Hopefully the owner reads this and changes the greedy «adding a customer under whoever». Take the first damn customer, you’ll earn your tip either way unless a customer SPECIFICALLY requests a stylist. I’m also upset I recommended my roommate to this place, they don’t deserve the revenue.
