History
Established in 2009.
HIP TO BE SQUARE It might be jumping the gun a little bit, but here goes: If Pilsen’s the next Logan Square, can the recent spurt of openings make the Avondale neighborhood – long the province of car dealerships and old-man bars – the next Pilsen? Square Bar and Grill, which opened last weekend in the former MoJoe’s Hot House space, has us holding our breath. When first-time bar owner Nick Daoud describes the trappings of the place – the wood floors, the exposed brick, the repurposed salvaged lanes from a bowling alley, the local beers on tap from microbreweries like Metropolitan, the sculptures from Chicago-based artist Rodney Wade, the named chef (Jason Noël) making cheeseburgers and deep-fried candy bars – it sounds like more than just a place to kill the Kuma’s wait. It sounds like a destination in its own right.
