Peter McCarthy Electric

We’ve used Peter a couple of times now on our vintage condo and he’s fantastic. We still have original cloth wires so when we do work, we need a professional and Peter is great. He’s always very communicative and responsive — even coming out last-​minute on a Sunday night! He does really great work and is just generally a nice guy. I’d recommend him in a heartbeat for anyone with electrical work.

Peter was booked up unfortunately, but I was very happy that he was totally honest with and try to BS saying he will be out in a couple weeks and never show like some guys do. He even gave me names of electricians that he trusts! Thank you Peter! I will call him for work from now on. Very professional!

I needed some advice on an old home that I’m buying and when I spoke with Peter over the phone he went above and beyond to help me out. He answered all of my questions, gave me very good advice, and really took time with me to help me understand the situation and at no time did I feel like he was selling anything. Peter is obviously a man that is passionate about electrical systems. It was a pleasure to speak with him and if do end up needing electrical work done, Peter will definitely be at the top of my list.

I had a couple of small projects after an inspection on my house (I was trying to sell at the time). Peter McCarthy did a great job. He was personal and explained things very clearly to me. I did have to call him a couple of times to get a hold of him, but that wasn’t a big deal to me. I would recommend.

Peter came out to trouble shoot a short circuit in my 100 year old condo. He was easy to schedule and punctual. Peter worked through the problem quickly and found the source of my short circuit in no time. His fees are very fair and he offered less expensive options for the repair. I will definitely hire him for additional electrical work I need in my apartment. I highly recommend him.

We didn’t (yet) contract Peter to do any work for us, but he was very courteous and responsive to our inquiries. He was quick to return our call (around a holiday weekend, no less!), and was willing to do a free evaluation and quote on short notice. We’re almost certain to contact Peter again when we eventually do need electrical work done.

I finally got the chance to work with Peter McCarthy — I say finally, because I had seen his name and his work recommended for years — and the experience lived up to the stellar recommendations. Efficient, kind, great work, no mess left at the end (I know this should be a given, but it really isn’t always the case), fair price; in short, I couldn’t have been more pleased. On a Friday morning both bedrooms in my condo stopped having electricity. That night I was having some people over and with no electricity in the bedrooms, I also had no home internet!
After much frustration, I called Peter. He was at the gym but came over right after. This was at 5:30 on a Friday! He was quick and replaced the breaker easily. He took off his shoes and was very courteous. The whole thing took about 20 minutes and I was so thankful to have someone available and close. I’ll definitely use him again.

Excellent and courteous service. They came out within 24 hours and fixed the problem with our lighting.

Found positive feedback online, so asked him to come by to help quote a subpanel addition in our older building. Peter was great!
Not only did he spend an hour here walking me through all the possibilities, he was more than happy to help me figure out ballpark costs (which were very reasonable), he also answered all sorts of questions I had about our building’s electrical system and «what if’s» I had about upcoming electrical projects that took our board months to get answers for.
Super nice, Zero pressure, would highly, highly recommend.

So far so good! Peter came out and gave us an hour of his time — we’re trying to figure out some wiring issues in our building. It is CLEAR that old buildings are something he specializes in. My SUPER picky husband, without hesitation, hired him to do some work next week. Will update after work is done.

We are extremely happy and satisfied with Peter McCarthy Electric! We first met him three years ago when we needed wiring for additional recessed lighting in our kitchen and living rooms. I called Peter McCarthy (by way of Angie’s List) and got an appointment for him to come and give us an estimate. We were in a hurry to finish this work as we were also doing a lot of other larger projects in preparation for the arrival of our twins, which could be started only after we finished the electrical end of things.
I gave Peter five stars right on that first day when he showed up not just on time but ahead of time. I explained to Peter about what needed to be done. While talking, I realised that he was completely booked for the next month with large projects in Hyde Park. However, Peter agreed to start the work within two days, in between projects and only asked that we be a tad flexible since he and his team would have a sporadic schedule. Peter and his associate, Matt, made sure that the work was done in a timely manner. They were extremely professional, respectful and left the areas clean with no hint that they had been there!
After they finished that project, we had some other smaller ones that arose throughout the years. I emailed them again without any hesitation and most recently a few weeks ago to add an outlet in our children’s closet to keep things as cord-​free as possible in their room. Peter and his team are consistently a pleasure to work with and fair in pricing…
I have had a lot of good but a few bad experiences with my other contractors during several remodeling processes throughout the years. But there is no doubt one can definitely learn about professionalism from Peter McCarthy Electric. Thank you Peter and your team! I needed a competent and reliable electrician to update the electrical wiring in a 100-​year-​old 1 bedroom condo unit that I had just purchased in Hyde Park. I chose Peter due to the positive ratings on Unilocal,and after he came in for an assessment of the unit, I had a chance to speak with him and ask him questions about the project. I have no knowledge whatsoever in anything electrical-​related, so I was very wary of being duped. Peter turned out to be everything I looked for in an electrician, and I would gladly recommend his services.
Peter explained everything that needed to be done clearly, and kept me updated on the process from start to finish. At one point, there was an issue with the discovery of my electrical wiring being intermingled with a neighbor’s such that part of their electrical usage was charged to my unit. Peter was diplomatic about the best way to address the situation without ruffling feathers in the condo (not knowing whether the intermingling was intentional). He took care to communicate with the management of the building before taking any actions, and I’m very happy with the tactful way in which he addressed this issue.
I am sitting in my home now that has the new wiring, which is not necessarily something one appreciates until something goes wrong. Nothing has gone wrong, and I don’t anticipate there to be any issues, but I know if anything comes up, I won’t hesitate to give Peter a call or text, and he would be quick to respond, just as he has during the rewiring process. I’m happy with the work that Peter has done in the apartment.

We just moved into our new condo in Uptown and needed a little electrical work done. We needed 2 plugs installed, a vanity light for the bathroom (can you believe a bathroom without vanity lights?), and 4 dimmers throughout the place. Not only to Peter get back to me right away, but he scheduled a FREE estimate visit to my home the very next day. The technician’s name was Matt and he was super nice and courteous. We got the estimate the very next day and I thought was pretty average. Not super cheap, not really expensive… just what I was expecting really. The best thing about it was that I got a flat fee quote. That meant no lazy technicians milking the clock… they get paid the same whether they are there for 2 hours or all day. We scheduled the work to be done a few days after that.
Matt arrived to my place on time and ready to work. He was here for many hours and didn’t even stop for a lunch break. The work was done perfectly and he didn’t leave any mess behind at all! I figured out the hourly out of what I paid and it worked out to $ 95/​hour… and that INCLUDED supplies! Very reasonable, I think.
Peter actually followed up with me the very next morning with a phone call to make sure I was happy with the work.
I couldn’t speak more highly of them. VERY satisfied. I’ll be recommending them to all of my friends. Great work!
Oh, and the 3 other electricians I contacted couldn’t even be bothered to reply to me yet… it’s been a week and a half…

Electricians are notorious for not returning calls, missing appointments and flipping a coin on what the problem might be. Peter McCarthy and his crew are far from the average electrician. I emailed Peter and told him I needed brand new service (200 amp) installed. I got lucky because although I live on the north side and his biz does not head this way due to «traffic, parking and tickets», he said that one of his crew lives in my neighborhood and would be able to stop by and assess the situation. I was very happy! Matt called me and showed up when he said. on the money! He looked at everything, explained the work in detail so that I could understand and assured me that it could be done before Thanksgiving.
When the work was to begin the weather was not on our side. The job consists of work inside and outside the house. Matt, said he would do all the work needed inside while it was raining and complete all the work outside, the following when the forecast called for clear skies.
When the dust cleared, the lights were all working, the new panel in the basement looked extra clean, the outside meter and pipes looked flawless and it looked like nobody had even been in the area of where the work was done. Matt swept the floor and tidied up the existing wires/​cables.
All the paperwork, permit and biz side of the job went without a problem. Peter is a sharp and smart guy. Cool Irish dude!
During the city inspection the in inspector said «this is a neat job». I totally agree with him. BTW the quote I received from another electrician here on Unilocal was was $ 100 higher for 100 amp service than the price I paid for 200 amp service. YES! {pumps fist}
My only complaint is that Matt would not accept any food, water, soda or beer from us. That’s a big no no when you enter a Latin household. We make anything an excuse to have a party, dinner or a drink… ha

Although I haven’t had the chance to use Peter McCarthy Electric for a repair, I’m giving him 5 stars based on the conversation I had with him last week. After finding him on Unilocal,I called for an estimate on some problems we were having with our ceiling fans. He called me back & spoke with me for some time regarding possible causes & solutions for the issue. He thoroughly explained everything & couldn’t have been nicer. Unfortunately I had just spoken with another electrician & scheduled an appointment with them, which is the only reason I didn’t go with Peter.
A few days later I received a letter from him thanking ME for my time! Wow! If I ever need more electrical work done, I’ll definitely call Peter.

Yes, Call Peter McCarthy. Peter is very knowledgeable, fair-​minded, and a very personable professional… My house was for sale and I needed to provide cost estimates for issues that a potential buyer’s inspector found. Peter promptly returned my initial call and all subsequent communications. He also showed up on time for the estimate — bonus points in my book!
After Peter took an assessment, he explained the situation in layman’s terms and answered all questions until I was confident I understood the scope of what was going on.
His thorough estimate arrived by email the following day and Peter followed up in a timely manner to make sure it was what was I expected.
