Ballet Academy of Charleston offers classical ballet for children (3 years — teenagers) and adults (all levels).

All teachers are professional dancers. Our studios have sprung floors, wood barres, mirrors, and lots of natural light. We offer the opportunity to perform with our Jr. Company.

History

Established in 1993.

Ballet Academy of Charleston was founded in 1993 by Mara Meir. Born in Jerusalem, Mara Meir became a Ballerina at the age of 12. She lived, studied, and performed for 10 years in Paris, France. Her teachers, Madame Preo­brajenska, Lobov Egorova and the famous Kniaseff, all exiles from the Imperial Ballet Academy of Russia became the great ballet teachers of Western Europe. Her fellow classmates at that time were Margot Fonteyn, Leslie Caron, Violette Verdy and even Brigitte Bardot. After moving

to this country in 1964 she started two ballet schools in Massachusetts and later relocated to Charleston, where she opened Ballet Academy of Charleston in 1993.

After Mara’s retirement in 2007, Corina Fimian took over the small ballet school. Since then the school has steadily grown and in 2012 moved to a larger facility. Today, more than hundred students (children and adults) receive high quality classical ballet training at Ballet Academy of Charleston.
