Helping Hands for Animals

I am SO sad to hear they have to relocate out of state. Not only is this a great thrift shop they support animals in need. I hope they get a lot of donations and can find a place here. Such great people.

Great selection … people are very nice and they do donate a part of their profits every month to a specific animal rescue group. Definitely worth taking a look

I have shopped at this store many of times and just love it! The owner is amazing and there are always great finds. Can’t recommend this store enough!

What kind of place says that they donate to animal rescues, but displays a large taxedermized German shepherd in their main walkway? It was beyond upsetting and unsettling.
Prices were way too high for stuff that was too junky. Stuff was stacked in a way that made it hard to see.

there is ALWAYS a sale here and the old dude who always works here will invariably have a cheesy one liner for you (ie «And to think I get that million dollar smile for free! Now that’s a good deal!»). my only real issue is that though clothes are organized by size category (S, M, L, XL), sizes of actual items in these sections do not correspond. it’s totally arbitrary. but hey, two tshirts for under 3 bucks is nothing to sniff at.

Came here with a friend to get fun stuff for Burning Man. We got there about fifteen minute before closing, quickly grabbed a few promising things, and with a couple minutes to spare asked for a fitting room. The woman at the front told us it was too late and «you have to go home.» She wouldn’t make eye contact, and there were other people still shopping who she let stay. What a weird coincidence that visibly queer people are the only ones she kicks out. I’d rather not be let in in the first place than waste my time. Maybe a sign in the door that says «Queers not welcome»? I prefer charitable thrift stores but apparently my money isn’t good enough for animals.

She refused to let us use a changing room because it was five minutes before closing time (I only had two things too) and she would rather go home early than let us buy things in her store and support animals I guess?

I love how they have different pieces, instead of clothing you can find anywhere in the real world. I found two vintage Pendleton Blazers in great shape and because of a sale I got them half off. I got a skirt and a dress as well and everything was 15 dollars!
They have tons of vintage finds. I will definitely go back!

We just moved into a bigger place and found ourselves needing more furniture. Not wanting to spend a ton of money on anything since we are apartment living, we decided to scout out EVERY thrift store in our neighborhood.
We walked in and we weren’t convinced, until we made our way to the back and saw they had some potentially great pieces. We came back the next day after mulling it over and made an offer on some items.
The owner, Simone, is unwilling to negotiate any prices. We were offering CASH for three items, a tv stand with a wonky drawer ($ 60), a 3 drawer dresser with a huge chip in the bottom drawer and a wonky top drawer ($ 50), and a salon chair ($ 100). It was 25% that day, but that dresser wasn’t worth more than $ 30 second hand and the TV stand $ 40. The salon chair, I admit, was a special piece so I don’t have many complaints there.
So we just left with the salon chair, because I can and did get a better brand new dresser at Ikea for about the same price as what she wanted to sell the dresser for + the work I would have had to put into it. And we found a TV stand down the road at another store the next day, 100% wood for $ 20.
Not loving my experience there, I still loved my chair and there were two more just like it. So I sent a photo to a friend that I knew would be keen as well. (Word of mouth, your best means of advertising).
My friend and I showed up and Simone wasn’t there, rather another worker who cannot negotiate prices without Simone’s approval. He said the chair was $ 100, but he would call Simone. She said $ 85.
I was standing there telling him I got it for $ 75, we were ready to walk out of the store with it and no, she wouldn’t budge on the price. He said we can come back Sunday when it’s 25% off and get it for $ 75.
I just do not understand why a thrift store would not want to make a sale then and there.
So now having had two bad experiences here and seeing this store doesn’t offer much more than the other stores in town, I say skip out. I cannot support a business that cannot support itself in it’s decisions. The whole process was frustrating. If we were talking vintage items, sure, stand firm, but these items have all seen better days.
And on top of that, I am BRINGING you more business, this is usually the time you create relationship in hopes to garner even more business, I was embarrassed that I had wasted my friends time and more of mine and I write this in hopes that I will save you a headache as well.

MY NEW FAVORITE STORE. NOT YELLING. I’M JUST SUPER EXCITED.
I walked into this store today and saw a very neat, clean, organized place riddled with fun home décor and clothing. As I’m making my way to the back, near the cash register… BOOM. An entire back section filled with so many goodies I let out a gasp. Clothing and blankets and electronics and shoes and home décor… the list goes on. The prices are very reasonable and comparable to other thrift stores in the area. The couple working there were both very friendly and helpful, too. All in all an awesome experience and I’m thrilled I found this gem so close to home!
I might even move in. But not in a creepy way. More like a cousin slumber party way.

SCORE! Stopped in and found some awesomeness at prices that made me smile!
This place has a HUGE selection of glassware/kitchenware/electronics…tons of cool and vintage tchotchkes. (my weakness, much to my husband’s dismay)
I’ll definitely be adding this joint to my regular rotation. I love digging through a pile of fun stuff that’s pretty well organized and at prices that make you feel like everything is the find of the century!

(Shopped 02÷15÷14 SA @ 3:00pm): Renew, reuse, recycle… repeat!
I walked into Helping Hands For Animals purely by happenstance while I waited for my family to arrive for my Dad’s birthday lunch across the street at Thai Kitchen. The bright-​yellow building caught my eyes like a gorgeous brunette wearing glasses — I couldn’t help but look!
So I killed time and cased the joint. To my delight, they were having a dog adoption event, and doesn’t love doggies?! After lunch, my family returned with me and my purchase bag had the following:
Trivial Pursuit Baby Boom and Silver Screen Edition Supplementary Cards (used — $ 3.99 ea.), and «Forgetting Sarah Marshall» DVD (new — $ 3.00) — I’ve actually been watching the Trivial Pursuit items on Ebay for awhile and they been in the total price range of $ 10.00 ea. (including shipping), so I got a bargain! Game night, anyone?! And, two HOT actresses — Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell, in one movie, how could you not pick this up?!
Service — It was decent. I was greeted by a nice woman when I entered but never approached again until I paid for my finds. This particular day they had a dog adoption event so much of the focus was on that. Otherwise, I normally didn’t expect much service at secondhand stores, so this wasn’t a biggie for me. However, I felt the store could’ve been better organized to highlight some possible diamonds-​in-​the-​rough.
Parking — They had a small private lot. Otherwise, plenty of free street parking along the main drag of Burbank Blvd. and the residential cross street of Florence Ave. Just be mindful of any posted signs.
Atmosphere, décor, ambience — Don’t let the initial parlour room fool you, because once you past that and stepped down (PLEASE WATCH YOUR STEP!) into a wide short walkway the treasure trove opened-​up to a long room to your left with a small section to your right. On this day, the area to the right was where the pet adoption occurred. In front of you was the pay counter. There were clear pathways (a plus!) as I’ve been in some mom & pop places where I’d dare say it was like «Hoarders» status. It appeared they maximized whatever inch of viewable space they had. Plenty of electric lighting with natural lighting only in the front. No TVs but there was background music.
Attire — Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-​shirt, boardshorts, and flip-​flops.
Overall, I’ve always been a fan of secondhand stores and the nostalgia that surrounded the many items from years past that could be found inside of them. So Helping Hands For Animals was a nice «find» for me and will undoubtedly stop in the next time I’m in the neighborhood; I wouldn’t go out of my way. The fact that some of their proceeds went to help various animal groups earned Brownie points with me. Their selection of items was mostly from the 70s to today, so no real vintage clothing items. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total bill was around $ 5.45 before tip). However, the prices appeared to be a tad higher than most, but as long as some of that additional profit was truly passed along to help the animals. And, although they accepted credit cards, not mine of choice… AMEX!

I went to 5 different thrift shops in the area today hoping to find the random treasures to make me go, «Squeeeee, what a deal! What a steal!»
Out of all 5 my luck was here at Helping Hands for Animals Thrift Store.
I squee’d when I found TWO specific styled vintage glass bottles that match my growing collection. Ohhh yeah!
Loved the toy section since I work with kids. Grabbed an unopened Beauty & the Beast activity for 50 cents. Sweet!
AND to top it off they benefits the meows and woofs. Yay!

Awesome store! Pretty well set up and organized for a thrift shop and really good selection of items. From kids to plus sizes, I’ve never walked in without finding something for myself or someone in the family and I like to go by just to see what they have sometimes to surprise me. :) The owners are really sweet and the guy that works the register is bad ass! He should have his own reality show! I got all my camping gear for the year there, lots of clothes as I’ve been losing weight and some really good books! My daughter has found a lot of jewelry and toys that she enjoys as well. As far as selection goes for stores with causes, this is one of my faves in Burbank!

Very disappointed. Most of the clothes were small-​large. There was one rack of plus sizes. Sad. The children’s section was very messy and crowded. Very little selection. This place seems to he geared for the typical size 6 LA woman, so if you are one you will like it. But for the rest of us, just pass.

This place is awesome. The selection is fun and funky and you can get a good deal if go on Sunday/​Wednesday when they have additional specials.
I was able to get a broad selection of individual plateware for a food photoshoot, a buck a plate.
Very cute clothes and other stuff, as well.

Helping Hands for Animals is one of those establishments which makes a great guessing game. You drive by and try to figure out what it is… Is it a pet grooming station? Animal charity? Pet shop? Vet? Alas, it’s none of the above and is: a thrift store!
Helping Hands for Animals is a small thrift shop located in Burbank. However, «small» is giving too little credit to Helping Hands; as it is actually quite big (4800 sq ft, to quote the store window). When I ventured into a quaint room, my eyes grew in pleasant surprise when I saw that the store just kept going and going and going (yes, insert Energizer Bunny here). Helping Hands certainly has much to discover!
The initial room has what I would remark as being the more prized items. Beautiful ball/​prom gowns, vintage and modern dresses, shoes and jackets. As you venture on, you discover children’s toys, CDs, and a massive (in comparison to other thrift stores) jewelry section. Room number three begins the journey into household goods (bakeware, cookware, glassware, electronics, etc) and the remainder of the clothing (jeans, skirts, tops, mensware, purses, scarves, etc). Finally, you round out the Helping Hands adventure with sports items and bookcases filled to the brim with books (childrens, adult, cookbooks, manuals… anything!).
The great thing about Helping Hands is that it is well organized. Womens and Mens clothing are separated which are then subdivided by style and further into size. Hangers are not amassed on the floor and clothes aren’t strewn all over the place with awful odors meeting your nose hairs (ahem, some of you Goodwill locations!). Frankly, Helping Hands isn’t the best spot for modern clothing, as most were outdated or just plain «crappy» but there were some amazing, authentic vintage finds such as dresses, shoes, and jewelery (and I know my vintage). The housewares and books are also a big hit. I was in book heaven!
The downside of Helping Hands are the prices. Items are far too expensive for the quality. Although, if you can balance your wallet in that respect, it IS for a good cause: Helping Hands for Animals’ sales proceed a different animal charity every month (ah, THAT’s where the animals come in!). Plus, they have great daily sales such as «Buy one Purse, Get One Free», and Wednesdays are 50% off clothing while Sundays are 25% off store-​wide (clearly, that is the day to go).
Service was mediocre. I wasn’t welcomed until I finally received a meager «hello» from the adult employee. The teen employees were more focused on gossip and eating a ramen microwave meal when I asked for help. Not terrible, but clearly the customer service skills need a bit of a shape-​up.
Overall, this unsuspecting shop is a wonderful find which may not result in a bag-​full of items, but certainly in that amazing feeling of finding that one «gold item». Not to mention, it supports animals… can’t beat that!

I second Butch’s endorsement. I’m a year-​round Christmas shopper, looking for things for holiday/​birthdays that are unusual and reasonably priced. It WAS clean, well-​organized, with terrific staff — which include large, friendly dogs (one named Dionne, I believe).
So, I snagged a gift or two to put away, and some cat figurines for the collection I’m amassing on some living room shelves.
