Union Hotel, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member

I’ve stayed at this hotel twice and I have never had any issues. Check in/​out was easy. Staff has always been friendly. They were very accommodating during a big snow storm during my most recent trip– I was able to extend my stay without any issues. Rooms are very cozy, but it’s NY– and you’ll never be in your room! The price cannot be beat! It’s close to everything you need. The only issue I had was that the floor I stayed on smelled like smoke.

Solid choice and the location can’t be beat. It’s a small room but it’s NY folks — you’re not going to be in your room. Yes — there is street noise — again NY. My room was clean and comfy — the staff was friendly and the free breakfast at a diner across the way beats continental crap any day. Also — for $ 100 a night you can’t even get a hostel or an Air BnB so the value is real.

We had a great experience at The Union Hotel! It’s certainly the smallest hotel we could have gotten, but for the price — it can’t be beat! The room and bathroom were super clean, the staff was pleasant, the bed comfortable and it’s in a great location. For a place you’re just going to sleep in, we had no problem with the size of the room — especially given how little we paid compared to other Brooklyn hotels. We’ve stayed at a Holiday Inn in Chinatown for triple what we paid here, and the room was only a few feet larger. We’ll definitely stay here again!

Walking into this hotel feels more like entering Harry Potter’s closet under the stairs. The lobby is about the size of mid-​size sedan, so while checking in, you’re awkwardly squashed in inches away from each other and have to squish yourself against a wall, an employee or the other unfortunate soul who happens to be staying in this hotel with you. We were pretty hungry when we got here so the fact that the elevator smelled like pizza was actually ok. Prepare yourself for opening the door to your room– All the other Unilocal reviews describing the rooms as tiny do not do these rooms justice. My dorm room in college was a palatial mansion compared to this. If you do HAVE to stay here, I suggest doing so by yourself. There are maybe six inches between the wall and the bed on one side, and maybe a foot or two of space from the end of the bed to the bathroom. We didn’t stay long enough for either of us to use the bathroom but I’m guessing noises/​smells etc. do not stay confined to the bathroom. There is a TV on the wall, although bring a door stop because the best (only?) place to watch it from would be the hallway. We checked in around 1am, exhausted and eager to sleep. However a quick glance at the bed cover showed a ton of stains and upon closer inspection… HAIRS. Little black hairs, everywhere. I checked both pillows, the top sheet, the bottom sheet, and the bed spread. Thoroughly grossed out, we went downstairs asking if there was another room available. There wasn’t, but we received «fresh» sheets to change the linens ourselves. Figuring that the new sheets would have been washed in the same place as the old sheets, I checked them out and found a ton of tiny black hairs on them as well. Eeeeeeek. Luckily we stopped for a six pack before checking in, and while calling every hotel within a ten mile radius for availability at saturday morning at 2am we STOOD in the room and had two beers. We did not sit on the bed, nor did we place any bags on the bed. After thanking the night manager, who was very polite and apologetic and checking out, he assured us that we would receive a refund for the night. Fast forward a week later, we are told that we will not be getting a refund due to the fact that there were no stains on the bed, only (ONLY?!) two hairs and we «used» the room.

We show up with reservations for 2 rooms for 3 people, two of whom are seniors, and we have the confirmation number. The reservations were made 7 months in advance and they had a credit card on file. The bitch (and she was) at the front desk tells us our reservations were for last night (they absolutely were not) and because we didn’t show up they cancelled our reservations for the week without calling claiming that’s not their responsibly. It was obnoxious and insulting. In no way did they own up to their mistake and start asking us for our papers like the Russian Secret Police. That left us stranded in Brooklyn the same day the Pope was in NY. I took us hours to find 2 rooms for a hell of a lot more money than the union. If we couldn’t get a room, we would have been very much SOL. (I.e., Rent a car and drive back to Chicago? Pay a fortune for plane tickets that day and lose the money for the return tickets???) Since we were stuck for a while I looked around. The rooms are tiny. It’s not much. The street it’s on is industrial and gross. You get what you pay for if they feel like honoring their obligations. Take a pass.

Absolutely amazing staff, very friendly. Check in was simple… tho they did use an old school Manuel card imprinter, but no weird card activity has happened since, so it seems legit. Our room is exceedingly small. The queen sized bed is legitimately the width of the room. While small, the room is clean, neat, and stylish. The bathroom features a rain shower, pedestal sink, and no vent. No room to keep makeup bags or toiletries. Honestly not anything unusual for a nyc hotel, and actually nicer and cleaner than others I’ve stayed at. Location is amazing. One block away from park slope on 5^th and two blocks from the union street subway entrance. Easy travel to all boroughs. Overall fantastic, just small.
The basement does have a keurig and an ice machine.

Had a prepaid booking last night. We spent less than a minute in the room before quickly leaving the hotel. This is the worst hotel room either of us have seen for a long time. It smelt. It was tiny (we’re New Yorkers but I mean tiny). And it was unacceptable. Avoid. No boutique, just putrid.

No complaints about the neighborhood. But I would not stay at this hotel again. The hotel is overpriced for what it is– a thoughtless, uninspired boutique wannabe.
Rooms are unconscionably small and very poorly lit. The queen-​size bed occupies very nearly the entire footprint of the room. And there is no lighting source near the room’s entryway, making that space unusable. (The bathroom is similarly dimly lit.) The walls are also comically un-​insulated. I could very clearly hear the phone conversations of my next-​door hotel neighbor.
The best part of staying at the Union Hotel is the complimentary breakfast at the nearby Station Café, a real-​deal, old school, unpretentious Brooklyn diner. But you could pay for that breakfast yourself for about $ 10.

Won a trip to see a few concerts hotel included, this was the hotel (it was close to the venue) it’s located on a quiet street, you could easily miss it if you’re not paying attention, the front lobby is just a person standing behind a what looks like a speaking platform and standing room for 2 – 3 people, the front «stand» people seem nice although one girl swiped my card through an old school credit card reader and bent it horribly… the cleanliness of the hotel was decent, my room was tiny. I’d expected this from reading other reviews and it holds true, there’s a bed, a dresser, a shelf for a nightstand, a flat screen, a bathroom and an ac unit. There’s a tiny walking path from the door and around one side of the bed. The hotel isn’t bad but be aware of the rooms are simply a decent place to sleep not a place to hang out. The room was average in cleanliness, the ac unit would warm up and make the room humid and sticky… overall not a bad place to stay but definitely not room for more than the single traveler, it’s located in a decent area in downtown Brooklyn, there’s plenty of cab’s, über’s, bar’s, deli’s, and subway access.

The rooms are SUPER tiny, think small Euro-​sized hotel rooms but for the price how can you beat it. We needed a place to sleep in Brooklyn on a snowy night after a gig at the Brooklyn Bowl (the Wythe was sold out) when we didn’t want to drive back to upstate Manhattan (aka upper Washington Heights). We called the Union Hotel and they had rooms available. It’s not close to Brooklyn Bowl but another band member was staying at the Union Hotel so we shared an Über there on a very snowy night. The price of the room including tax was $ 100 and they have less expensive rooms too! The bathroom was a nice size, there’s a flat screen, they give you breakfast coupons to use at the diner nearby (we didn’t go). Definitely don’t stay here if you get claustrophobic but if you’re on a budget and need a place to stay in NYC, this is your spot.

I have not been Unilocaling in a while so I apologize to those who were waiting for my next review. this is my first official review of 2015.
So it begins
My Lady decides to book this hotel on the fly and I said why not after all we do need a little get away. We get to the union hotel and check in. The front clerk lets us know right away no smoking in the rooms (nothing to worry about I’m not a smoker and neither is my lady) and there maybe a incidental fee (who knows at this point)
We arrive at our room and well lets just say unusually small and to describe how small it is. as soon you open the door the bed is right there and 6 inches away from your bed there is the bathroom.
Clean sheets and pillows as soon as you get your room and the maids really do make the rooms clean as possible. We was in the basement where you can make your own coffee and get ice and seen the maids busy with washing all the linen so I seen how it goes
Wifi is good but not great and it was nice to know how helpful are the front clerks as they know the area. Free breakfast at the Station Diner on 4^th ave and union street courtesy of the hotel (See my review of the Diner for my experience there)
overall I give it a 4 stars. The size of the room bothered me but I will go there again.

The room is soooo soooo small, but cute. Safe neighborhood, cute restaurants in the area, near Union St subway R train.

This would be 3.5 stars if my friend hadn’t had such a horrendous time actually getting into the room he had already booked. The woman actually asked «what’s an attachment?» when he offered to email her the hotwire confirmation document. Wowzers. It reminds me of an article I read where the man didn’t know what a xerox machine was…
For the price, it’s a pretty good deal for $ 95/​night with the hotwire deal. The room and bathroom are both tiny yet very clean. The whole décor is modern and simple. It’s a budget hotel that doesn’t feel like a motel 8 not that I’ve ever stayed in one of those… There’s also an old school iPhone dock/​charger/​alarm clock which is convenient. Overall, it’s a pretty good choice for those on a budget.

Ideal for one night or weekend getaway. accessible to all of BYC and Brooklyn
We stayed here one night on a Saturday for a concert at Barclays Center. Could not ask for a better price — $ 94.
The main feature to the rooms is the bathroom. Every guest will agree due to the small room where your bed is.
A huge plus is free breakfast at a local diner just two short blocks away.
While I won’t stay here for business, I will return if I need a place to crash in NYC again.

Stayed on night in a standard king room. Very quaint, small hotel in a wear house neighborhood. The room was very cozy, and on the smaller side. Bathroom very modern, with a decent sized shower. Because this is NY and the hotel is rather small there isn’t much room for luggage in the rooms, however there are a few furniture storages in the room. The bed is very comfortable, however the king bed isn’t as advertised, rather two twin/​full beds pushed together. That doesn’t take from the comfort though. Not much to do in the surrounding area, but if you venture further out there are some vibrant venues. Staff of 1 in the front, and during the day a few house keepers. A little noisy while cleaning, because the walls are so thin.
If you can, opt for a room on the above floors.

DON’T GO THERE!
I booked this place on a popular discount booking site for cheap. It was supposed to be a 3 stars, but I’ll prefer a couch on any frat house to this place.
1. You can easily hear people having sex on your floor. There are two reasons for this a. Substandard walls, b. The place seems to be filled with cheaters.
2. Your room don’t have any equipment. no small light to read, no desk, no iron, no glass, etc. Nothing. They will tell you without laughing that it is a «boutique» hotel.
3. There is no common area (lobby, business room etc.) Only one person with his luggages can stay in the «reception».
4. Staff don’t care at all. they don’t really speak english and will not going to help you in any way. When I asked for a better room, they first suggested to upgrade for a 10 $-night/​fee. When I refused to pay but still insist to change my room, they told me that the «available» upgraded-​room was not available anymore. In a single word, they LIED at me.
5. Everything is broken and of poor quality. Nothing is really clean.
Only good thing: The included breakfast is «correct», you have to go to a restaurant 2 blocks away. Correct location too.
Don’t let you trick by this place.

I’m conflicted on how to rate this hotel. The prices are ridiculously cheap, but it’s not a dump. While the towels are softer than your average budget hotel and the soap and shampoo are upscale, there are some annoyances about this hotel:
1. The «King» bed is two twin mattresses pushed together and not very comfortable.
2. There’s a flat screen TV on the wall that gets several standard def cable networks and no local channels.
3. There’s an iPod dock but it’s the old style connector so I couldn’t plug my phone into it. There’s no radio in the room.
4. The message light is stuck blinking on the phone and the front desk has no idea or concern about turning it off.
5. No iron in the room. No place to sit other than the bed save a lone folding chair up against the wardrobe.
6. No lamp by the bed, just an overhead fixture. Not great for reading.
On the other hand, you’re 2 blocks from the subway in a decent neighborhood with a free breakfast served at a nearby diner for less than $ 200/​night. There’s no tub but an immaculately clean shower. The last time I stayed in NYC for this price was a dingy old Days Inn, and this is far nicer and more convenient than that hotel was. It looks like a boutique hotel that needs to try a little harder and not like a scene from a bad movie. All things considered, a decent bargain.

The small rooms are the smallest issue that Union Hotel has.
The «queen-​sized bed» is just two twin-​sized beds pushed together. That is the jankiest janky jank scam I have ever seen in a hotel, and I have stayed in some real death traps.
I would prefer any $ 30 hooker roach motel with bullet holes in the walls and flat buggy pillows over this place any day. HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY THATS WHAT MY GRANDMA ALWAYS SAYS AND SHE WOULD SAY IT IN ALL CAPS SO THATS WHAT I AM DOING NOW!!!
Lincoln Motor Lodge of nowhere, WV isn’t trying to tell you that you’re going to be comfortable or even enjoy your stay there. Union Hotel markets itself as this amazing, comfy little place with clean and enjoyable rooms.
Mashing two beds together like you’re having a ghetto sleepover isn’t the only bullshit move Union Hotel will throw at you.
Each bed is extremely uncomfortable and wrapped in diaper plastic in case anyone pisses all over their stupid twin beds, which the person before us definitely had. And I know this because here I present to you a photograph of the piss stains in question. But fuck it, right? As long as the mattress is clean under that crunchy yellow plastic, who cares?
Just don’t. Stay on your friend’s couch. Seriously. If you don’t have a friend, sleep in a hostel.

If you are traveling alone, need a place to sleep and serve as a home base (rather than a place to lounge and relax), want to be in Brooklyn, and you’re relatively low maintenance, I think this place is perfect. The room is small but cute and clean, IKEA-​ish décor. Walking distance to the subway, Prospect Park, and all the shops and restaurants in Park Slope. Couldn’t ask for more.
The complimentary full breakfast was a nice perk, which I didn’t realize when I booked online. The food is standard but decent, includes orange juice and coffee (not good). One day I got two eggs, sausage, home fries, and toast. Another day I got french toast and sausage. Tip isn’t included, so I’d leave like $ 3. Some mornings, I wasn’t as hungry and just went to the bagel shop to get breakfast for $ 3.
Based on reviews, I originally looked at the Super 8, but it was booked before I made my reservation. My friends stayed there and while the rooms were slightly bigger, it also looked older and more dingy, and one person said their room was not clean or ever tended to. I also looked at the Holiday Inn Express and Hotel Blue, but they were both more expensive than Union Hotel. I definitely made the right choice.
Only complaints are that the bed is a little weird, maybe 2 twins pushed together? I was alone and I sleep on one side, so it didn’t bother me, but if there are 2 of you or you like to sleep in the middle of the bed, it could be uncomfortable. And I was on the first floor facing the street, so I didn’t want to ever open my window shade. It wasn’t a big deal, but it would have been nice to get natural light. Could be easily remedied if you ask for a room on another floor.

First time to NYC and already knew rooms came at a premium with minimal space in Manhattan so decided to try this place out. It was moderately priced and although the rooms were fairly cosy they were workable for myself.
The neighbourhood was pretty trendy with lots of good eats and drinks close by. The was also a subway station nearby that you could get into town easily.
The staff weren’t particularly warm and helpful but they weren’t rude either. The AC did make a bit of a noise and unfortunately are located next to your head. Also the walls were a bit thin but I’ve had this issue at multiple hotels in the US so far.
They offer free breakfast at the union station café about 3min walk down the road which is fairly reasonable and the staff/​owner are friendly! (Don’t forget to tip them before you leave, the hotel only covers the meal).
The only real thing that would stop me from staying there again is that is a bit of a trek back from Manhattan even by subway.
