The Dental Spa of New York

I was heartbroken when I saw The Dental Spa of New York only have 4.5 stars.
Absolutely unacceptable. I’ve been seeing Dr. Frank for a few years and all of my friends know him by name. They cringe if anyone outside our group mentions a dentist or tooth. They know I’m about to rant about loving my dentist. They are quite busy so you need to book in advance but it’s because they are so flipping fantastic.

The Dental Spa has been taking good care of me and my chompers for a while now, and they do a great job. Everyone there is always pleasant and upbeat — they know they’re there to be your dental experts, but they don’t act like teeth are the only thing in the universe and that you’re a disappointment to the human race every time you get a cleaning. I always head right for the massage chairs in the back — why not get a Brookstone experience while you wait for your appointment?

I have been extremely happy with the service I’ve received from the Dental Spa.
My previous dentist joined a new «high-​end» practice and doubled his rates. So I asked my friends and colleagues for a referral. I received two very enthusiastic referrals for Dr. Sapienza.
My friends were absolutely right. I’ve had no problem at all getting or moving appointments. In fact, they have called me when they have an earlier or better spot open up to see if I’d like to take it. They text me appointment reminders too, which is so helpful.
Dr. Sapienza had a great chairside manner — very informative, very connected and very empathetic. I also like that we have a plan for my teeth, and he helps me make informed decisions.
One of the things I noticed was that they are very good with hygiene. For example, they changed the plastic handle cover on the overhead light before he started working on my mouth. You really don’t see that level of attentiveness very often.
His staff is professional and very nice as well.
After all these years in New York, I feel as though my teeth are finally in safe hands (figuratively, or course — they’re still actually in my mouth).

I’ve been going to the Dental Spa for about 5 years and it has been the best dental experience I’ve had in my life, thanks to the dentist/​owner, Dr. Frank. He has always been nothing but warm, professional, knowledgeable and committed to making each experience a positive one. He identified a major problem with my jaw (odontogenic cyst) which, if undetected, would have lead to very dire consequences. He is very skilled and the visits are never painful, also a great «bedside manner» that inspires confidence. Additionally I like his hygenist, and the space itself is very unique – it literally is a «spa» with massage chairs, a Keurig, foot warmers and paraffin treatment. Highly recommended. A very personal, mom&pop feeling.

After moving here to NYC I didn’t have a regular dentist, and wasn’t great about getting my regular check ups/​cleanings when I went home. I finally had to break down and find a dentist here after having some mild annoyances with a cavity. I found one through a coworker and it was the worst experience ever! So when I started having some serious pain that couldn’t be ignored I hesitantly went back to the same place only to be told I needed a root canal and they couldn’t do it. So the start for a new dentist began again. Luckily I found Dr. Sapienza through a friend and couldn’t be happier. The entire staff is very friendly, the office it’s self feels welcoming, and they even send you great reminder texts about your up coming appointment. I was very nervous about the whole thing, but it all went smooth. They answered any and all my questions (even when I called back after my apt with new ones), I received the most thorough and gentle cleaning I ever had, and they remember my latex allergy every time with me having to remind them. Dr. Sapienza talked me through the root canal procedure as he was doing it, numb me up more when need be, and was concerned about any pain I may be feeling. The session for post went well too. Now all that’s left is the crown, and I’m sure it will go just as well.

I don’t know who the hell writes these excellent reviews. Based on my experience this place is horrible. Dental spa??? There’s nothing spa about it. Everything they mentioned was just to lure you in. Their website mentions free consultation and yet when you go to the office they charge you 40 something dollars. Receptionist is unprofessional, she told me one day I can come in on one day and few minutes later says she never said that because they are closed on that day and made me sound crazy. Doctor doesn’t care what you want. He doesn’t care that your teeth are important part of your image. He refused to do what I asked him. After he ruined my smile and I was furious and told him to fix it like 3 times, he looked angry and almost flipped out. When I came I specifically mentioned what needs to be fixed, and he just did whatever he wanted. He did a filling for me and guess what now my tooth is absolutely killing me! I can’t eat on my left side at all!!! And it’s been over a month! And also he charges Manhatton prices!!’ Save your money and pain and go somewhere else.

My experience at the Dental Spa was awesome! Dr. Sapienza knows his dentistry. He is quick, concise, and has never put me in any pain. He explains what he is doing and why, is totally in tune with the patient’s needs. He and his entire staff made me feel very comfortable. They were very informed and helpful in sharing with me some very good tips. The «spa» environment adds to a renewing & relaxing experience.

Sigh… apparently getting that first appointment is just not enough. I don’t know WHAT the hell goes on with their scheduling system, but once again… for a followup appointment that I booked SIX months in advance… it was once again screwed up. I had a 7pm appointment… only to show up at the office at 7pm on the dot to find it closed and locked. They apparently thought the appointment was for 6pm. Good thing I learned from my experience the first time around and kept the little appointment card that very clearly said 7pm, otherwise I would have thought myself crazy.
Sorry Dental Spa, I wanted to love you… but this is just maddening. I understand you’re a popular joint so you probably don’t need my business, so don’t worry any more… you no longer have it.

I just sat down to write a review but it seems Zach B. had a surprisingly similar experience so I’ll defer to his review and keep mine brief.
I too hadn’t been to the dentist in roughly ten years. After my first visit it was apparent that I’d need 7 fillings and at least one root canal! Six months later everything was repaired/​filled and I have nothing but great things to say. Dr. Sapienza and his staff were always helpful, considerate and compassionate.
If you’re looking for a dental experience that defies convention (and will feed the meter); this is the place.

It had been 10 years since my last dental appointment when I first visited Dr. Frank’s office. I had one of those seemingly universal dentist horror stories which had curtailed my ever wanting to visit another.
Today, as I left from the last of many appointments to get my teeth in shape, I actually found myself upset that I wouldn’t be seeing the staff as much.
Dr. Sapienza knows his dentistry. He is quick, concise, and has never put me in any pain. He explains what he is doing and why, is totally in tune with the patient’s needs, and ask him to tell you some dentist jokes — hilarious. Once, while waiting for the novocaine to kick in, we watched the dentist song from Little Shop of Horrors on Youtube and cracked up the whole time.
He broke down the cost of every procedure for me and was honest and thorough (and very reasonably priced). I’ve never had any problem with scheduling appointments or if I am running late. The automated e-​mail and text reminders are great and you can even confirm your appointment via text.
See Dr. Frank and forget about those dentist horror stories — now you can laugh at them with your awesome dentist.

So… High Five to my fellow Unilocalers for giving this place such glowing reviews…
I no longer work in midtown (where my old dentist is)…and really wanted to find an awesome dentist… home in Brooklyn. or downtown in the city near my job…
Stumbled across the great reviews and decided to give them a try…
So I visited them last August for a regular cleaning/​first appt… had to wait 3 weeks to get an appt. at the time I needed… but no biggie…
In all my years of going to the dentist (and I’ve lived in a darn dentist chair for practically all of my childhood/​pre –teen years… from having braces) — this is by far the most friendliest office I’ve ever visited… Clean… friendly reception… and my hygienist (Lisa) was the BEST ever… I’ve had some people scrape my poor little mouth with such force over the years — I just got used to pain and the uncomfortable — ness of a cleaning — but not with Lisa… (mind you… I was 7months prego at this appt)… She took such extra care … made sure I was super comfy… changed positions if needed… and NO PAIN… Dr. Sapienza came in after and chatted with me for about 35 minutes… and I think his personality is fantastic… such a «New Yorker» kind of dude… lol… very funny… warm…and didn’t rush me at all… and of course. he complimented my smile and teeth… and gave me a pat on the back for taking such good care of them…:)
So another great thing about this place …
CHIP SHOP is across the darn street…
Leave it to me… to think of food while getting my teeth cleaned!

I was originally blown away by this place. I came from a dentist that had misdiagnosed me and at first, this place seemed like the perfect solution. The office interior was gorgeous, the front desk crew was a little snappy, but seemed nice overall, dentist was great, and they accepted my insurance.
My appointment was in March 2011 and Dr. Sapienza said I had no cavities/​need for root canal, (which my original dentist recommended), but said he needed my xrays from my original dentist first before he could completely dismiss the need for a filling. After months of calling and emailing the front desk and trying to get things straightened out with them, they finally received the 3^rd set of xrays sent to them. Dr. Sapienza said he was going to look over the x-​rays and just shoot me an e-​mail that everything looked okay. I never heard from him again and he did not respond to my repeated calls and e-​mails, so forget about him ever looking at my xrays, like he said he would.
Cut ahead to January 2012 (nearly a year later): I get a call from the office saying that they need me to call in to verify some information on my account. I figure it’s them calling to say I waited too long for my 6 month check-​up and needed to make an appointment now. Instead, I call in and they tell me that they cannot accept my insurance plan and that I owe $ 205 for my appointment back in March, which was ONLY a dental exam and cleaning, no xrays. Worst of all, THEY SENT ME TO COLLECTIONS and said that it was for my refusal to pay the bill! I NEVER was notified of a bill or problem with my insurance up until this point and now I have to deal with collections on my account. I have NEVER had a problem with my credit, collections, payments, etc and now I have to deal with this because they can’t get their heads out of the clouds.

Fantastic!!! I had a dental emergency on Dec. 26. I could not find a dentist to see me because everyone was closed for the holiday. Dr. Sapienza was open but he was booked and had no availability. After I explained my emergency to the receptionist, Dr. Sapienza agreed to see my on his lunch break! It was my first time being treated by him. I will never, ever go to another dentist. He is the best! Professional, smart, kind, warm and the staff is great too. The receptionist was very helpful.

Definitely very nice atmosphere with massaging chairs, free wi-​fi while you wait.
Dr. Sapienza is great and very competent dentist. It takes a while to find a good dentist or a dr. who CARES– DR. FRANK DOES!
I also did my teeth cleaning, not only hygienist Yuliya is very beautiful– this was the most easy & comforting teeth cleaning experiences I had so far.

I’ve been dealing with an ongoing issue, and Dr. Frank, so far, has sent me to two specialists before treating me. He won’t do anything that he knows will hurt and won’t get to the root (pun intended) of the problem.
I went in today last-​minute with raging pain, and came away with an intelligent explanation that, after further investigation (
, other specialists), seems to be spot on. I’ve had so much done in my mouth over the last 30+ years, and can spot a good doc in a heartbeat. Dr. Frank Sapienza is on the top of my list with the best. His sincerity, kindness, bedside manner, great staff, and the «spa» environment, are just shiny cherries on top.

I rarely if ever review anything but restaurants but since it is so hard to find a good dentist I figured I would give these guys a shout out.
Every dentist I have been to (1 other) in Brooklyn has tried to scam me and sell me stuff I don’t need. Well not this place.
I got a cleaning it was great and I am happy to say I finally found a good dentist (after my fiancée found it and made me go there)

Wow ! The most thorough cleaning & exam I’ve ever had. My teeth looked & felt GREAT!
More importantly, Dr Sapienza suggested a specialist who he works with frequently to save a tooth that prior doctors told me was LOST. He encouraged me to tell him every little complaint I’ve ever had over the years & addressed each issue.
This immaculate neat office is never crowded, the wait is usually only a few minutes & I am never rushed. Comfy dental chairs & you can even request a little footwarmer!
LOVE THEM!
** The only caveat is that appointments are booked in advance, they do not over book so the wait for an appointment can be up to a month. This is actually why the office environment feels so nice & relaxed.

The few times I have been here have so far been the best dental experiences I have ever had! Dr. Frank Sapienza is extremely careful, precise and attentive to my needs. I have a jaw that is prone to click and I have an incredible fear that one of these days it’ll click shut and in my panic to reopen it I will bite down on whatever instrument is in my mouth at the moment. I made him aware of this issue only ONCE and now every time I see him he reminds me that he knows and that I only have to open my mouth as far as I can comfortably. He reminds me that if I have any discomfort or I need a break to just raise my hand or tap him. No other dentist has ever been this attentive to me.
He is friendly and you can tell that he really takes pride in his craft. You have to appreciate that in a person.
I am absolutely floored by the service and treatment I get from the Dental Spa and Dr. Sapienza! I will be coming here for a long, long time!

Thank God for this place. I have had a few negative experiences with local dentists, but this is hands –down the best dental experience I have had period, in any of the places I have ever lived. The waiting rooms (in from and the one in the back) are very comfortable. The equipment is state of the art.
The staff is very friendly on the phone and in-​person and have always dealt with my insurance company very quickly and professionally. Dr. Sapienza is very hands-​on sees every patient personally. He gives out his email and cell phone for dental emergencies and is quick to respond to a message of either kind. For example, when my wife came down with a tooth infection on a Friday night, we were in the pharmacy getting antibiotic Saturday morning.
