Had a really good experience at this place last weekend. I asked for a recommendation on a sub-​$ 25 red wine and I left the store a few minutes later with what turned out to be a great tasting bottle. It seems to me like the staff are really knowledgeable on their wines and their prices seem very fair. Granted, I am very ignorant when it comes to wines so take my review with a grain of salt.
Overall, I will definitely come back to Nini’s the next time I am looking to buy some wine.

The perma-​scowl Asian-​ish chick who works here most weeknights serving up remedial suburban ‘tude and no wine knowledge… oh, she just makes one’s consumer experience SO enjoyable. Lots of options in this neighborhood. Do yourself a favor and hop three blocks up to Bottle Shoppe on Bedford for a better selection and a staff who aren’t soured on the world.

We live around the block from Nini’s Wine Cellar, so it has been the convenient option for us for the past year. However, after a few bad experiences, we decided to give up on it. On a few occasions, the staff recommended just random bottles while pretending they knew something about wine. On 2 occasions, the bottle we got had turned bad. We went back to the shop within the hour, and they refused to give us a refund or exchange for another bottle, saying that they were not sure enough that it was bad. So we just spent $ 25 for a bottle we cannot possibly drink without being poisoned.

Nini’s reminds me of C-​Town just down the street: if I had a better option that wasn’t 3x farther away, I’d go there in a heartbeat. As it is, I’m stuck with Nini’s. The hours are consistently inconvenient, the selection is middle of the road, and the attitude is entirely unnecessary.

This place seems to get really polar opinions and I cannot really say why. I live near Nini’s and because of that I come here often for a bottle of wine. They have a great selection and everything is reasonable priced. Also important is that the place is clean, well laid out and spacious. There are a few places close by that make me feel like I am in a wine laced coffin.
Anyway, the staff has always been friendly and they also have a solid selection of spirits. I do wish they would keep some of the staples though — some cheaper bourbon or vodka for instance. Sometimes you just want to mix it and I am not mixing some artisan vodka.

Staff was slumped in their chairs behind the counter. Who wants to get a bottle of wine from ppl who look like they don’t even want to ring you up. You’re better off going to a liquor store on one of the corners for wine. Yikes!

This is the best neighborhood wine shop in the area. They’ve got your dependable around $ 11 wine selection and finer, plus smattering of good liquors with some locally sourced stuff. The owner is a tremendously sweet and warm man who cares about the neighb. Peeps who work there are nice– don’t be put off by the lack of swarming, fake welcomes as you step in the door. If you like that sorta thing you’re not in the right neighborhood.

Nice selection of Farmer Fizz, great wall of rare spirits affordably priced, super solid value table, and lots of european wine up front. Only balanced domestics and new world selections. Have found the staff very helpful. Happy to tell you about it. Go here and leave with a great bottle of wine, priced fairly.

I love this wine shop! It’s cozy and easy to swing in and grab a bottle on my way back from C-​TOWN (TOWN TOWN). The under $ 11 table is great for quick picks, and I have to say I’m a huge fan of the punch card system. I love having this nice neighborhood shop a block away. They also carry liquor, which is nice if you’re in the mood for something else.

I am a huge huge wine fan and this place is the absolute worst. Quite simply put, the staff is awkward and unfriendly and the wine selection is mediocre and overpriced. I live a block away yet pillage to UVA (which is amazing) and shlep my wine just to avoid Nini’s.

I just wanted to provide an update to say that lately the staff has been nicer than before. I still don’t receive any greeting when I walk in the door or any effort to help me make a selection, but when I approach the counter with my wine now, I’m at least welcomed with a smile and «hi.» It’s a small improvement, but given that previously I was made to feel like a jerk just for being in the store, I think it warrants an update.
Also, to the owners of Nini’s: Thanks for taking the time to respond to my comment. I will not be taking you up on the offer of a drink (as that sounds somewhat awkward), but I do appreciate that the staff seems more friendly now than they did a month ago.

I’ve been in this neighborhood for 6 years and I was thrilled when we finally got a real wine shop and not some thing with bulletproof glass. Knowledgeable staff makes me look good by pointing out good value reds and giving me little facts about the wine itself. I love this place. Also they have a punchcard that pays off.

3 stars because the labeling and descriptions of the wines are spot on, and the under $ 11 dollar table is a cool feature if you’re going to BYOB in the neighborhood.
BUT… It smells like cat in here though (i’m allergic, and it’s weird), and the staff were not particularly helpful.

Wow, I’m shocked that some people didn’t give it 5 stars. I’m there waaay too often :) but I’m just trying to fill up my discount card! I set goals!
They are always so friendly when you come in and it’s a very relaxed atmosphere, not salesy. I swear they know what every bottle of wine tastes like and they describe it perfectly. I had a bottle of white the other night, course I can’t remember the name, but they told me it had a tropical taste and an aftertaste of banana. I was thinking, yeah ok… but I SWEAR I tasted it!
Super cool spot! way better than the douchey Bottle Shoppe, which is the other option in our neighborhood.
