Awesome experience. I found a fridge from another vendor, but they got terrible reviews for service etc. The guys at J & R where able to order what I wanted, matched the price and deliveredit within a 3 hour window a few days later. Installation was quick, reasonable and efficient.
Don’t be fooled by the small storefront! They can do it all!

Brought in a simple heater for repair. The small store is mostly full of appliances for sale. They accept items for repair at their regular sales counter. The staff is friendly enough, and they seem like straight shooters. They’ve been here for a long long time, so this is not some high pressure sales mill; they know they have to maintain their well-​deserved reputation on every transaction. Got an estimate at a reasonable price. Fixed on time, demo’ed in shop, everything’s great, and they even said to come back if anything went south (as required by NYC Consumer Affairs Rule 2 – 261). I saw one salesman very kindly help another customer with her watch battery. They way he patiently explained everything to her – even though it was just a simple watch battery – it was clear that he wanted to keep her as a customer. I was more in and out since I knew exactly what I wanted in terms of repair.

This is the kind of neighborhood store I’d really love to support. I’d happily pay more to keep them in business — if they provided good service. Unfortunately, their record is really mixed, and at the moment, with them taking more than a week to reinstall an a/​c unit they put in incorrectly — after charging an exorbitant amount to take it out and store it (at times that were convenient to their schedule, not ours) — I find myself saying, ‘Wow, if I want service this bad, I could just go to PC Richards or Best Buy.‘
I’m rooting for you, JR, but you make it really hard.
I know you have limited staff, but in the end, if you can’t compete with Big Box on price, you’re going to have to beat them on quality and timeliness of service, or you won’t survive. Get it together, please! Lord knows, 7^th Avenue doesn’t need another bank, realtor or nail salon!!!

I had been unable to locate bags for an ancient vacuum cleaner. It was probably older than the J&R salesman I spoke with. He was friendly and interested in helping me. It took some effort until he determined that, indeed, they were no longer available. Then he found similar bags in his shop that fit.

These guys are the best! They mean what they say, and they follow through on what they say they’ll do. As we all know, these are extremely rare qualities in our day and age. Very trustworthy — please continue to support this wonderful neighborhood business!
I have a 1950s Magnavox stereo console, and J & R repaired it on time and at a fair price. Ralph is honest, knowledgeable and reliable. Shout out to Dennis who removed and re-​installed the parts! Dennis was great — reliable, knowledgeable, and technically excellent. I’m sorry — I don’t know the name of the man who repaired the amplifier, but he did a wonderful job. My records sound amazing. Last night, I was listening in bliss to Ray Lamontagne.

Several months ago, I was looking for a place that could repair several antique fans for me. I had picked them up for next to nothing but the catch was they didn’t have wires to plug in or they had frayed wires. I didn’t know where to go and happened into a local vintage shop in the Slope that suggest J&R.
A couple weeks later, I came in and they quoted me a price. They said that I’d really need to bring it in so they can see it. So I did. I ended up bringing in three fans and the guy running the shop looked at them. One of them he gave back to me, saying there was nothing wrong with it and that I shouldn’t waste my money. (It ran but I was concerned about the wiring anyway.) Kudos for his honesty. The other two definitely did need rewiring. It was something I could have tried myself but it would have taken me hours and hours for each and I was nervous about rewiring it wrong and setting an electrical fire in my building.
Anyway, the guy looked at the fans and just kept admiring them. He said that it was a long time since someone brought in fans this old and that they don’t make them like they used to. He said the technician was an older guy who knew how to rewire the old fans. The way he kept talking about it, I felt like it would be okay.
He asked when I needed them and I told him no rush so he said it would be about a week. Two to three weeks later, I received a call that the fans were ready. I suspect that the technician worked on the fans right away but they both loved the mechanics of the old fan so much, they kept it in the shop an extra couple weeks. As a former antiques dealer, I totally get that and love their appreciation for something so sustainable.
I came in a couple days later and the guy I dealt with remembered me as the antique fan person without me even having to say anything. He just kept raving about the two fans I left with him and said one of them was the best made fan they’ve ever had in the shop. He showed me the work the tech did and told me about a motor issue with one of them. The work was amazing. Not only did the tech change out the wire, but he went and cleaned out the inner parts, while changing the wiring. He also said to run them and test them since they have a 30-​day guarantee if it doesn’t work.
At around $ 60 for each, including parts and labor, it was a touch pricy but this is north Park Slope and there are very few people in NYC who could still do the proper work on electronics this old, plus they just went above and beyond. Several months later, my fans run well and have kept me cool all summer long.
If you need to rewire an antique fan, bring it here. These guys know what they’re doing and have a love and appreciation for it. You can’t do better than that!

Thank goodness for this store. Ran over there today for some CD-​R discs that I wanted to burn songs on for my friend’s birthday. A month ago I went there for a small electric kettle so I could offer tea at a little classroom party. In both cases, prices were very reasonable. There are few conveniences left in Park Slope; this is one of them.

Great service and expertise for purchase and installation of Friedrich Kuhl through the wall a/​c. Read positive reviews and decided to try J & R a local store rather then a big box store. i am glad I used J & R. I called them and Mario answered the phone. I wanted a top of the line Friedrich Kuhl but had no clue about voltage and sleeve size. Mario asked for the model number of the unit I was replacing. It was a 1988 Friedrich. I found the model number and gave it to Mario over the phone. He looked it up and could tell what voltage I needed and what model would fit my current sleeve. I felt comfortable with his knowledge and expertise and ordered the Friedrich Kuhl over the phone.
The installation is where J & R really shined. The J & R truck arrived on schedule and the men carried the 200 pound a/​c up 2 flights of stairs. I was exhausted watching them. The old A/​C would not come out of the sleeve. it turned it was siliconed to the sleeve. The guys left and returned with Dennis and a 14 foot ladder. Dennis climbed up the ladder and cut away the silicone from the outside of the sleeve. Thereafter the old unit was able to slide out. The new a/​c slid right in and was a perfect fit. Dennis took the time to hide the a/​c cord because my beautiful wife hates wires hanging out.
All in all this was an excellent experience. Mario took the order over the phone. He knew the right questions to ask to make sure I got the right unit. The delivery people were excellent.
I am now sitting in my living room with the a/​c pumping and my beautiful wife has her coat on because it is so cold in here.

Bought an air conditioner here – an extremely easy, painless experience. The last time I’d bought an air conditioner, from PC Richards on 14^th St., I’d had a truly nightmarish experience, with all kinds of problems arranging the delivery, so I did a lot of research to find a place with good customer service. Was not disappointed.
I emailed J & R to ask if they stocked a few specific models of AC that have the reputation of being particularly quiet. Instead of emailing me back, a gentleman (whose name I can’t remember – maybe it was Mario?) called me and talked to me about different models. I thought that was great customer service. I went in to buy the AC the Tuesday after Memorial Day which is an extremely busy time for air-​conditioner stores, but they were still able to deliver it by the following Friday. Nice, professional people. Next time I need an appliance I will be coming here.

Bought a built in microwave from J&R and was very happy with the service. I already had a microwave in mind based on my research. First of all, they were able to give me the lowest price (69 dollars less than Sears) and free local delivery. The staff was very nice and helpful when I got there. The microwave arrived in 2 days (could have shorter if not for the snow storm) at the time they said it would. The installer came on time and did a good job installing the microwave. The microwave works great, i paid less and used a local business. Everyone happy.

I used this merchant based on the positive reviews and was not dissappointed. I got straight answers at a reasonable price.
They had the opportunity to earn their reputation when the A/​C unit came without enough Freon to work correctly. (The manufacturer’s fault) They sent their guy to identify the issue and after the problem was confirmed the same day they brought it to the manufacturer’s repair place and returned it the same day it was fixed. I could have saved a few dollars shopping around for the cheapest but I would never have gotten this service.
I took one star off for sloppy installation when the grill was put on incorrectly and the controls did not work right. I had to solve that myself.
During their busiest time of the year they were direct but coutreous and never gave me the run around when other vendors would have. I will continue to use them in the future.

J&R are the very best!
Last weekend my fridge freezer died. Sears promised to deliver one on Friday but on Fri morning said I’d have to wait until Tuesday. I cancelled the order. Called J&R. They confirmed my requirements and called me back with a model that could be delivered next day Saturday. The appliance was delivered as promised and the old one taken away, no mess, no fuss. I paid with a check. They called back today Monday to check that everything was OK.
My only problem was why didn’t I use J&R in the first place?
Excellent service over and above my expectations. Telling everyone — buying local gets the best results.

Wow!!! Super amazing service over the phone and in person! I called Saturday morning to see if they could do an ac installation the same day. Mario answered the phone and was super helpful and informative. Asked all the right questions about the space I needed cooled and gave me some options. I decided to go for an 8000 btu GE ac system. They were already booked up and said they could make it between 1 and 4pm but showed up around one and did the install in under 15 mins! Super speedy service. I would totally recommend J & R to everybody that needs an ac installation this summer!

Moved to Brooklyn from Virginia over a holiday weekend and realized that the previous tenant in my apartment had taken the window unit with her. I called every other place listed on Unilocal — all of whom either laughed when I asked for same-​day sales and installation or else laughed at having window AC units in stock at the end of the summer season.
I happened upon J&R and within five minutes, I had a window unit to my name and a 2-​hour window later that day for installation. The guy I spoke with asked a few questions about the size of my apartment and how cool I preferred to be (lol) and then made a recommendation from there. A little expensive — the window unit cost me about $ 350 and installation was something between $ 75-​$ 100 — but given how fast they were able to help me, I am incredibly grateful.
Even better — twenty minutes after I paid via phone, I got a call back that they were able to meet me at my new place in a half hour. Two more points for J&R!

J & R is a great community resource and they make getting appliances easy in the Park slope area of Brooklyn. They do service calls and they are quite responsive for most home appliance needs. My one issue with them is that they keep pushing these cheaply made GE products that break down oftentimes way before the warranty runs out. GE is the GM of our time.

If you are buying an appliance for the first time, J & R is the way to go. They are prompt, answer all of your questions honestly, respond to your urgent requests with a level of service that is unmatched.
I cannot recommend them highly enough.

I had to have my Panasonic plasma tv repaired (They have beautiful pictures but are about as reliable as a Yugo), and after some searching, I found J&R. As mentioned in other reviews, they were friendly + honest and although it took a while to get the set fixed (due to backordered parts, not their fault), they kept me in the loop so I knew what was going on.

I needed a new air conditioner. I was looking at other large chain store’s Memorial Day prices and I thought that I would throw a bone to the local place instead. And I am glad I did!
I walked in and asked for the lowest price 5,000 BTU air conditioner that they had. They showed me one which was ok but I spotted another one near the door. When I inquired about that one the owner said that that was for a pick-​up order 2 days away. I asked if I could order one too. He did better than that! He gave me that one and charged me the reduced price that he offered on the original one they showed me.
I was in and out of the store in 10 minutes.
I love supporting local establishments especially when their customer service kicks ass!

J&R in Brooklyn is definitely one of the last of the great, stand-​up, consumer electronics stores in NY. I’ve been to Lowe’s, I’ve been to Best Buy, I’ve been to PC Richards, and they just don’t stack up. They’re fine if you know exactly what you want, and don’t want to hassle with sales-​clerks who don’t know what they’re talking about; but when you want a real expert opinion, when you want real knowledgeable help from a sales clerk who honestly wants to help you out, then go to J&R! Customer service is king here, and that’s extremely important, especially in today’s economic climate. The thing that distinguishes J&R from all others is the excellent and personal service they extend to each and every customer.
I stopped into the store last summer because I needed an air conditioner for my apartment. It had to be smallish, but still have enough power to cool down at least two rooms. The team over at J&R helped me find the exact AC I needed, ordered it for me and delivered it lickity split!
I often just stop in there when I need little odds and ends like extension chords, or DVDs for my computer just because the guys that work there are so much fun to talk with. If I ever move out of Brooklyn, it’ll be a sad day to leave J&R behind.
