Astoria Federal Savings

Usually when I go to the bank, it is not crowded. There might be 1 or 2 people in front of me to deposit checks or whatnot. The staff is frequently will say, «Sorry for the wait» despite no one in front of me on the line-​up area.
The environment is nice and clean and they play down-​beat bank music.
I remember when the bank was bustling with tellers and clients. But this was like 10 years ago… Now they’ve got every major competitor in the neighborhood.

A teller had a hard time accepting a joint tax refund check from myself and my husband because we are both men. Even after going to the branch manager for approval she still gave us a hard time and asked another teller is this was ok. And this is the Park Slope branch!
Finally closed my account there.
On the plus side, the high ceilings are ah-​mah-​zing and most of the tellers there have retro 70’s style hairdos. I die!!!

I’ve been banking here for over 30 years, and I don’t know what your other reviewers are talking about.
Astoria’s fees are much lower than the big, heavily-​subsidized banks that have locations on every corner, and their staff are friendly and courteous. We have stayed with them despite the inconvenience of so few locations because they’re a real neighborhood institution and are helpful and friendly.
Try them yourself, and make your own decision.

Unfortunately this bank is all bloodsuckers.
They instituted some sort of checking fee while I was away at school, and cleaned out a hundred buck from my account.
I asked for it back, and they refused.
What are you gonna do?
Choose another bank.

Once again, the theives at Astoria Federal Savings are sucking fees from my account. It seems that the incompetent staff they have doing simple arithmetc CANNOT understand that if a debit card is used to make a purchase, that purchase CANNOT be approved if there are funds not available. When funds are available, and the transaction does goes through, they, somehow, find it that there were no funds available, but the transaction goes through anyway, and charge a $ 35.00 fee. Their double talk would make the Marx Brothers proud, because, whatever excuse they give, it just does not make sense, especially Eric Fahad, the branch manager at 110 7^th avenue. He constantly lies, justifying whatever dumb reason is it that they will charge fees.

I got $ from their ATM and paid a hefty $ 3 fee for the privilege. I needed a $ 10 bill, so I went into the bank and asked them the break a couple $ 20 bills. They WOULD NOT DO IT because I do no have an account there. I even asked a supervisor, who also said no. This was despite the fact that I had bills from their ATM.
I will never use their overpriced ATM machine again.

Sucks I was a long time customer when greater bank became astoria stayed with it to give it a chance big mistake!!!

Tellers remind me of «lunch ladies», all they are missing are hair nets. One gave me a hard time about accepting a bunch of checks for deposit because I had stamped «for deposit only» on the backs instead of signing my name. When I had a problem with one of my accounts the officer was very rude, acted like she was doing me a favor by correcting their error. The atmosphere is very oppressive, the lines are long, everything takes forever. I closed my accounts and moved to TD Bank.

Rude service, long lines. Waited for over five minutes as one teller helped customers. .. slowly. When another window opened up, the teller acted as though the customers were interrupting her.
There’s really no sense in going to this bank. Few ATMs, and their website has very little to offer as far as online banking. The myth of the local, small bank being friendlier than the nationwide banks doesn’t hold water anymore. Save yourself the hassle, go to one of the big banks like Bank of America or Chase.
