Free Range Wine & Spirits

I stepped in this place when I saw The Pogues Irish Whiskey in their window display. The guy behind the counter was very enthusiastic about irish whiskies and we had a great conversation. This is a completely different experience than I’ve had at other liquor stores nearby (especially on Flatbush Ave) where the employees are apathetic or completely unhelpful. Here is a place I want to support! My wife bought two bottles of liquor from here later on Sat. during a bourbon tasting. I’m looking forward to coming back this weekend!

Love this little place. Came in to buy some liquor as a gift, and the helpful clerk guided to me a good section based on my budget. He recommended 2 – 3 different bottles and then stepped back to let me consider them without him hovering. I selected the one I want, and he went to the back to get me a fresh bottle.
Seems like a good wine selection as well, but definitely hit this place up for smaller batch liquors if you’re in the mood.

Pretty relaxed, some nice choices. The clerks were nice and they had ranges of really expensive to reasonable. Have wine tastings on Saturdays… sometimes :(

I’ve been going there since they opened and Free Range is far and away my favorite wine and spirits shop in the city. They have a great selection and I particularly like that they carry liquor from Brooklyn based distilleries.
The people who work there, especially the owner, are very attentive and knowledgable. Also, they take the time to get to know repeat customers so they can tailor suggestions to the individual.
If you live in the area this should absolutely be your «go to» place.

I came in looking for the perfect wine to celebrate the first anniversary of me and my man. What does a man do for such a special occasion? Merlot? Sauv blanc? I just couldn’t decide!
Then there was Lisa, we talked for a minute about my pallet and my man’s love for seafood and she knew just the bottle. She even suggested an excellent restaurant.
What a wonderful place and what wonderful employees. Thank you Free Range! My night was a huge success!

my husband’s a wino and as much as he wants to drop pounds of pounds of mulla into buying great wine, i, the more reasonable half, always tell him to explore more reasonably priced options.
free range has fancy pancy expensive stuff but they also have a really great selection at lower price points. whenever we drop by and grab something, whether its a splurge or a something more economically priced, we’re always impressed. people there really know how to hunt for great wine.

I see you there. Reading this. And I can tell you’re just like me. You’re almost frighteningly good-​looking, but definitely not conceited about it. Your magnetic charisma can be a little intimidating for everyone around you, but lucky for them, you’re really humble about everything and you don’t mind hanging out with inferior people. You’re not fancy, and you like your booze just fine.
Well, you’ve probably also been thinking about how wine in a box has become too highbrow for its own good lately. Thankfully, Free Range is now stocking wine in a can. Just for you and me.
Overall, Free Range actually does feel like a liquor store that’s here just for me. It opened up around the corner from my apartment, it’s owned by the nicest of guys, and they’ve got just about everything I want in the realm of booze.* The selection isn’t massive (mostly because the place isn’t very large), but it’s focused, high quality, and the prices aren’t bad at all.
Best of all, Jack and Michael know what they are talking about. It’s pretty obvious that they have tasted everything in their shop, and they are ready and willing to make excellent recommendations. If you don’t know what you want, they are both very approachable, and very knowledgable.
Do you need to know what to bring to a party?
Do you need to know what to pair with shortribs?
Do you need to know what to give your mom for her birthday?
If you asked me, the answer to all of these questions would be wine in a can. But if you ask Jack and Michael, they will have an actual, good answer for you. They know their wine; they know their whiskey; they know their booze. And they have regular tastings, so go check them out.
In all seriousness too, the wine in a can was actually quite good. After all… if it wasn’t, Free Range wouldn’t keep it in stock.

Fantastic selection and amazing service/​help. Went in wanting one selection of bourbon and the owner and I talked about quality and the best choices and has now introduced me to some amazing local distilleries. Thanks so much! Will definitely be back.

Really great selection at my price point ($ 15-​$ 20 per bottle). Salespeople are always knowledgeable. Every bottle I’ve purchased has been pretty good — not amazing, but solid table wine (and no bad bottles). Given this, I now buy by the case (they give a discount for purchases of ten bottles or more).

I stumbled in when I just needed a quick bottle of rose for a BBQ, and left with two great options at exactly what I wanted to spend.
There are many budget wines for casual affairs as well as plenty of intriguing serious bottles for that big celebration.
I find myself going back to check out the always evolving liquor selection, especially the whiskeys.
Bonus points for being pooch-​friendly and for the fridge by the door with the seasonal favorites, chilled and ready-​to-​go.

Jack runs a great shop and is super passionate. He’s got a great selection that spans a wide range of regions, varietals and tastes — in fact his specialty is identifying wines that actually drink more expensively than they cost! Keep it up!

Stumbled on this wine store on my way to a friends dinner and was in need of a bottle.
When you walk in, you immediately know this ain’t your corner liquor store. Just the way the store is set up, you know their not kidding around. (Most wine stores are so jam packed, I’m terrified I’m going to break a bottle just walking up and down the aisles). This place was more like a wine boutique. In a non pretentious way. It has a nice open space comfortable enough to browse around and take your time.
I was impressed with the authentic collection. It’s not huge but a good mix of whites and reds. I didn’t recognize any of the names (no cheap Cali chards here). I actually did end up buying a Chardonnay I had never tried, but had no doubt it would be good as this place obviously knows it’s wine. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and gave me quite an education on whiskey (looking for a gift), but so not in a pushy way. Lots of Brooklyn made liquors too, no Absolute in this place!
Very pleasurable experience, I’ll definitely go back.

I have to admit that I was a bit of a skeptic about this whole organic wine thing. But I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have a sulfite allergy, and both deli meats and wine are the main culprits. So I haven’t indulged in almost a decade. But I was going to meet the girlfriend’s parents and because it was Passover, wine was the only alcohol option. I didn’t get the name of the dude helping me in the store, but he was so cool and full of information. He steered me towards a few reasonably priced red wines that had minimal sulfites. I had trouble trusting in this whole process, but the wine was a hit. Everyone enjoyed it, and I didn’t wind up in the hospital. Also, I realized how much I’ve missed drinking wine. I’ll definitely be back for more!

Just bought my first bottle of wine from this new store. Friendly service and a wide price range of wines so no worries if you’re looking for an under $ 20 bottle. Time to find the corkscrew!

Such a relief when Jack Chester took over Donna Da Vine. The mood is now
decidedly different, Jack is personable and knowledgeable and the selection
of wines is growing and there is an emphasis on local and artisanal spirits.
Great addition to the neighborhood.

My new favorite place to buy wine!
I used to frequent the prior wine store, Donna Da Vine, mostly as it was conveniently located, however, over the years, the selection of wine slowly dwindled to the point of almost nonexistent which is partly the reason it had taken me two months to visit the new place, but I’m so glad I finally did!
After some grocery shopping/​errand running/​an intense gym session, I decided I no longer had the energy to make dinner so after grabbing some Sottacasa to go, my fiancé and I stopped in here on our way home. They have a great selection of wine (mostly under $ 30) and have a great variety for the size of the store (you can likely find something for everyone here) and some local liquors (can’t say much about the liquor as I had eyes only for wine on my visit).
I’m a red girl, but it was such a hot day, I wanted something refreshing and had no idea what to select. The guy that was working, maybe the owner?, was so knowledgable and helpful. He recommended a few different wines and then whipped out some glasses and gave us a sampling to help us narrow down our decision. While in the store, 4 other patrons had walked in and I was amazed at the way he was able to give everyone personal attention and clearly knew the wines inside and out.
Highly recommend!

What a great neighborhood find! There aren’t too many bottles to choose from, which is a good thing. Everything seems to have been carefully chosen by the owner and fills a purpose without much overlap. The liqueur selection is fantastic and has taken my cocktails to a whole new level. What really makes this place special is Jack (owner); he knows each wine inside and out from the age of the vine to the climate of the region and year. His food pairing skills are very impressive.
