Our café brings you a complete New Zealand-style Pie Shop/Café experience including some of the best handmade, authentic gourmet meat (or vege) pies & espresso-based coffee (Flat Whites a specialty) — north of the equator.
We also have NZ inspired sweets, candy and a small selection of groceries.
We present local artists on our café walls and we offer NZ music for sale in-store.
History
Established in 2003.
DUB Pies (The Pie Shop’s parent company) was, originally, a peripatetic wholesale bakery from Manhattan’s Lower East Side. We had sevearal bases of operations including the dark basement confines of the Chelsea Markets before moving to Brooklyn (2005), which we now call home.
Founder, Gareth Hughes, had been pining for the meat pies that Kiwis and Aussies grow up eating as a staple. Having moved to the USA in 1996 and having found nothing to sate that appetite he learned to make them himself — and Down Under Bakery (DUB) Pies — was born.
It is not an overstatement to say that, in New Zealand & Australia, meat pies eclipse the importance that burgers, pizza and hot dogs (combined) hold in the USA food-scape.
The Pie Shop is our flagship retail location. Our pies are now USDA approved and can be purchased wholesale by contacting us through our website.
