Sarah Westcott, CPDT-​KSA is the Head Trainer of Doggie Academy. As a full service dog trainer and behavior counselor, Sarah draws from her extensive toolbox to craft a unique lesson plan for each client based on their needs and goals. She believes that training should be fun for both dog and human so that the journey is just as rewarding as the results.

Benji and I have been taking recreational agility classes with Sarah for several years now. Benji is a rescue who had been abused and had lots and lots of fears. He is now more confident and we really have fun in the classes. Benji is pretty easily distracted, and Sarah’s been helping us learn to work with that.

Kate is amazingly helpful as we navigate our German Shepherd’s rambunctious puppyhood. Too often, we worry that he is engaging in problematic behavior or that we’re doing something wrong. Kate is a wonderfully reassuring presence who dissipates our anxiety and teaches us how to redirect our puppy’s attention and energy. She demonstrates each technique very clearly and effectively, and has us practice while she gives us feedback. Her wisdom and enthusiasm has worked wonders with both us and our puppy. We look forward to more private lessons and classes with Doggie Academy!

In March, my partner and I got our eight-​week Toy Fox Terrier. How quickly we had forgotten what it meant to have a puppy in the house. We ended up getting a trainer. He came to the house three times; his lesson’s didn’t help, and our puppy was more afraid of the trainer than anything else. Well, our puppy was not getting any better, and we were getting desperate. I, of course, turned to Unilocal and saw all the great reviews given to Doggie Academy. I scheduled a lesson, and we met our trainer Kate Naito. Kate was amazing and gave us faith. Our puppy is very hyper and never listened to anything. Penny, now comes on command, and we have learned how to work with her. She is still hyper, but thanks to Kate we have learned how to get her to focus. So if you live in Brooklyn and need a trainer, contact the Doggie Academy and ask for Kate. Since our training with Kate was such a success we are now going to take Penny to the Doggie Academy to take puppy agility classes. I will let you know how that goes.

Sarah is a godsend. Not only is she patient and supportive to pups and their guardians during class, she also is an excellent trainer. I had just about exhausted all efforts trying to figure out how to get my very barky, very excited, 9 month old Malinios/​Cattle dog mix to leave the house, cross the street, go for a walk in the park, etc., without having a crazy freak out when I realized Sarah might be able to help. One lesson was all it took (after months of reading books, trying training tips from other trainers, almost losing my mind). I’m so happy to report my pup is a pleasure to walk with now and it’s all thanks to Sarah.

Sarah is an outstanding dog trainer for many reasons. First, our dog (and all the dogs I saw her work with) absolutely lover her, and loves to work with her. Second, Sarah is organized. Her website is excellent, she makes online appointments, she is punctual. Third, she is a great teacher. She shows you exactly what you should be doing, and makes you practice honestly, and she gives you helpful feedback.

My 4 yr old golden retriever, Hudson, and I have been taking agility classes for 2+ years with Sarah. It has been so wonderful! Huddy and I have become quite a team with the help, encouragement and relaxed guidance of Sarah. Anyone interested in learning agility and bonding with their pooch, should definitely consider one of her classes. She has been a great teacher r and trainer.

We went to a puppy socialization class. Everything was great (except for 2 junky looking people lol), Sarah answered all our questions and Archie had a lot of fun.

We took the «Loose Leash» class with Sarah and noticed an improvement in our puppy’s walking behavior from the very first class. By the end of the fourth class the transformation was incredible. We can take our one-​year-​old puppy out on a busy street and he’s much better at staying by our side now. We were also worried about our puppy’s safety as he sometimes tries to bolt when a loud truck passes by, and Sarah worked with us on positive reinforcement so he’s getting better with that behavior too.
Training is of course an ongoing process and we’ll continue to work with our puppy using the techniques we learned in this class. I’m very glad we took this class, we’ll be taking more, and I’m happy to recommend Doggie Academy to anyone who needs help with training their dog.

Our Kerry Blue Terrier just graduated from puppy kindergarden with Sarah from Doggie Academy. I was a bit skeptical about positive dog training (believing in old school training). Well the more I started using the methods learned from Sarah, the more my dog responded and the stronger my bond with him became. The class was fun, informative and my puppy learned how to be polite. I can’t wait to take the basic obedience class next, then I will probably go on to the Agility and Tricks. I am a fan and also got to meet other puppy owners in the neighborhood. In addition I was able to email Sarah with any issues and she responded quickly. You can’t go wrong with this class!
