I highly recommend With Fencing. Several months ago, I called them to give us an estimate on repairing or replacing our fence. Scott came out to look at the job when I was at work. He called me and said that they actually built our fence 20+ years ago and he remembers doing the job with his dad. He said he had a picture of the job somewhere. By the time I got home, Scott had gone back to the office in Brisbane, found a color photo of this job from 20+ years ago, and left it for me in an envelope along with the estimate. I was impressed. I was also pleased that the fence didn’t need to be replaced; it just needed a few repairs, which is a testament to With’s workmanship. Fast forward a few months and I now have a crazy Vizsla-​mix puppy who can jump the 4-​foot fence and does so every chance she gets to go visit the neighbors. Because she could only get over on our side (the side with the railing), I was climbing over the fence 5+ times a day and hoisting a 45-​pound dog over the fence and back into our yard. It was starting to get old (and realy starting to hurt my old-​lady back). I emailed Scott to ask me what my options were. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money. Scott told me what to buy at Home Depot and agreed to come out when he was next in the neighborhood and install redwood lattice fence toppers on top of the existing fence. These toppers add 18 inches of height to the fence and look fantastic. The puppy is NOT happy that she is now contained, but I am. Thank you, With Fencing!

Avoid them like the plague! Scott stated he’d try to correct the problem, after seeing my Unilocal reviews, and viewing the fence that obviously encroached off of my property. But he’s just full of hot air: hasn’t made any follow-​up attempts in months, even after I contacted him repeatedly. It will definitely take court action with this company.

Scott and his team just finished a horizontal redwood fence for us. Their craftmanship, attention to detail and responsiveness were excellent. Scott would text me photos of mock-​up samples of the fence and give me options on the look. This made it easier for me v. having to be there on site to discuss these decisions, saved me lots of time, which I value. The fence has received rave reviews from all neighbors too. Will have these guys back again in the future. Thank you Scott and Jeff

I am a contractor in the Bay Area. I used to build all my own fences, until I worked on a high end house in Burlingame and With fencing did the job. These guys are fast, reasonably priced, great quality and very professional!
I have worked with them 20 plus times and they have always come through perfectly!
In the construction world nothing is as easy as it seems and nothing will go perfectly every time, but these guys will see every job through until you are happy.
We have had some pain in the ass customers over the years and Scott, Bobs son has handled them so professionally and with such grace. He is a old school craftsman with such charm you will find yourself wanting to get a beer with him.
I can not recommend a better company than this for a fence!

Prior to hiring a contractor for your home, it’s highly recommended that you get at least a couple of estimates so you understand the market, each contractor’s skill sets and general price ranges and so you can pick someone you’re comfortable with hiring.
We are SO glad that we did just that because we 100%+ know that we are NOT HIRING this company for the reasons outlined below.
UNRELIABLE
First, this company is not reliable. I scheduled an appointment with Bob With, owner of With Fencing, for 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013. In my conversation with Bob, I stated that it was very important that he arrive close to 10:30 a.m. because we were missing work and had to return to the office as soon as possible. Bob explicitly stated that he understood these simple instructions and would be at our home at around 10:30 a.m. After waiting for 40 minutes and not receiving any calls from Bob, we realized that Bob was a complete no show, and we left the house for work.
RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL
Second, Bob is extremely unprofessional and rude. I called him at 5:30 pm and inquired why he did not arrive nor call us to say he was cancelling our appointment. Instead of sincerely apologizing, Bob immediately put the blame on us! He went on the defensive and blamed ME for scheduling an appointment with him. He said he should not be held responsible for running late and not showing up. He said he tried calling. That’s when I caught him in his lie– he called 50 minutes AFTER our scheduled appointment! Not only was he trying to make poor excuses, but he was manipulating and misrepresenting the truth.
During our call, he continued to raise his voice at me and made poor, unprofessional excuses. He said he had too many bids and simply did not have time to meet his obligations and appointment with us. I couldn’t even get a word in because he literally went off on the phone.
How is he still running a business? Moreover, the two passengers in my car were witnesses to our conversation (as I had him on speaker through my car). They were completely shocked at Bob’s attitude and after the conversation ended, they said they could not take him (or his business) seriously. None of us will be hiring him for any contractor work.
POOR BUSINESS PRACTICE
Third, I am deeply disappointed by his demeanor and the way he runs his business. He was unapologetic and insincere. I cannot get past the fact that he blamed us and started going off about how busy he was and how customers should not expect him to give notice if he is not going to show up. I’m guessing he wasn’t educated on common courtesy nor has he ever been held accountable for his actions.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I understand that With Fencing has a few 4 or 5 stars on Unilocal,but please do give weight to the mediocre ratings on this Unilocal page. After this recent experience, I would not recommend this business to any of my family, friends and colleagues. If you would like to go with other fencing companies, I recommend that you get estimates from:
— M&L Construction;
— McGibbon Construction; and
— A-​1 Fencing.
If you have any questions, please let me know and feel free to send me a message. I would hate to know that a business like this could get away with mistreating customers. It is completely unacceptable and intolerable.
Bob, if you are so inundated with bids, then you should be upfront with your potential customers and let them know that you’re not able to accommodate them into your schedule. If you don’t see any value in doing so, then you should take a primer on business management and etiquette because your competitors are doing a great job in balancing quality work with good customer service.

Bob was prompt and through — the bid came in lower than the others, and his wife was extremely courteous on the phone. In the end, Bob’s son repaired the entire fence and lowered the bill because the work was much more straight forward then anticipated. Definitely 5+ Stars.

They did a nice job on a simple picket fence and tear-​down of the old fence but when I decided I didn’t like it he wouldn’t work with me to change it.
5 stars for workmanship.
3 for quality of material. The beams were good but cheap pickets.
1 for price. I found out later we paid way too much.
Be sure to get several quotes before going with them and be sure what type of fence you want.
Also get a receipt for the actual materials cost.

Scott With and crew are the best fencing and deck contractors I have ever worked with. They have done a number of projects for me, both large (a huge redwood fence with lattice, gates, etc. surrounding a big house/​property, including extensive custom work and small (small deck, a really cool storm door that Scott custom designed) and the quality of workmanship, price and genuine family-​run business were so much different than any other contractor or fence company I have ever worked with. They showed up on time, were easy to do business with and charged a very fair and reasonable price and I priced all the local competition.

Bob restored our faith in Contractors. He easily understood the concept of my deck and railing. The crew was managed by Bob’s son. They arrived on time, each day, were courteous and professional. The job was completed within the three days that Bob estimated and workmanship was impeccable!!! Bob had done fencing work for our neighbor and we would HIGHLY recommend him for his TREK deck work and fencing work (based on our neighbors results). SUPER JOB BOB AND CREW!!!

We contacted several contractors to discuss our deck project. We went with With Fencing primarily because they said they could do the work within a week and because they were the first to respond with a quote.
They did an amazing job! They arrived at the job on time each morning. They obviously have been working together for a long time. They were extremely well organized and efficient. It was like watching a well choreographed performance. Each person had a specific job which they did quickly and professionally.
The deck they built was more beautiful than we had envisioned. We went with a high quality manufactured product for the floor and redwood for the railing. The redwood was from Beronio Lumber and was a nice red shade. The flooring of the deck was perfectly cut, predrilled, and spaced. It looks beautiful.
When unexpected issues came up, i.e., a rotted window frame that got in the way of the deck, they dealt with it with ease and went the extra yard to take care of the problem. They also were open to small alterations in the design.
We couldn’t have been happier. I would highly recommend these guys. They know what they are doing and did a great job!

I received an estimate from the owner back in June. He didn’t really take the time to explain much to me or answer any of my questions. I felt like I was being blown off each time I asked something. His estimate ended up being 1,000 higher than the other fence company I went with. Maybe I just had a bad experience with them but I wouldn’t recommend them sadly.

I live in South of Market of San Francisco. Tried to book an estimate, but was told they «don’t come down that far»? Maybe use someone else for SF?

Great work, quick and finished job on time! Our fence was a little tricky due to the yard being sloped. They worked the slope into the fence design! Very reasonable priced! If I need another fence, I would definitely call With Fencing.

I had a great experience with the humorously named With Fencing. I called them the morning of Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve), asking for a consult on my front yard’s picket fence. The fence was built too close to my driveway, and I used to hit it regularly when backing out. Because it had been hit so many times, the fence was falling over, looking sad and forlorn.
The With Fencing guy came out to look at it that day, said it was an easy fix, and called his son to see if he could stop by and do the job the very same day. He did. Now the fence is standing tall and proud, and has been moved away from the driveway so I no longer hit it.
I appreciated how quickly With Fencing did the job, and the pricing seemed fair as well.

Gosh these guys did a great, quick and reasonably priced job. Our fence was pretty straight forward — 6 foot tall redwood — but they built a solid retaining wall below it and addressed an awkward side fence situation next to it. I was nervous at the beginning and then saw the guys out there with their levels making sure each board was just right.
One note, you get what you ask for. We just wanted a simple fence and we got it. I wish I had spent a little more time thinking through the framing and specifying the wood to use/​layout/​etc. Ultimately it looks good but I don’t think I was prepared for the pressure treated framing.
By the way, a friend who is a contractor suggested that we make sure the ends of all pressure treated wood is treated (otherwise it has no value in terms of preventing rot). With Fencing did that at our request, but I’m not sure that is standard procedure. Something to consider. Better yet, don’t use pressure treated wood as that stuff is bad for the world. We were stuck with it already being there and figured, since it is there, we should make sure it served its purpose.

With showed up when they said they would for the estimate and the work. New fence looks great, old fence is all hauled away, crew was friendly and professional. If I were to need another fence before this one wears out I’d certainly call With again.

I’ve had With Fencing do two jobs for me and have been pleased with both. They did a strip of fence when I first bought our place. They recently complete 2 runs of fencing.
While I was happy with their previous work, I had 4 companies quote the project given the current economic conditions. They came in at the most competitive rate strengthened by the fact they stand behind their work. I had another competitor bid a solid 20% above With’s quote.
Scott was great at quoting and explaining the plans as well as checking in with me while it was being built to make sure they got the correct size, angles, etc. This extra check-​in allows for some fine tuning that made the fence that much better.
Funny, I really love my new fence. Domesticated pleasures.
