For 101 years our family has provided heating, air conditioning and sheet metal goods and services to local individuals and companies. We do installations as well as service furnaces, air conditioners and fans. We are best known for our large and expertly staffed fabrication facility. We can make flashings, duct fittings, metal roof systems, structural steel, stainless steel, countertops, range hoods, prototype work, commercial kitchen exhaust components, laboratory metals, copper, brass, and much more.

We cary about $ 200,000 worth of metal products including sheets, ductwork and fitttings, angle iron, pipe, flat bar, furnace parts.

Walter Mork Company takes pride in serving our community. So we welcome business from all levels from homeowners to architects, engineers, builders, business mangers, facilities maintenance and more.

History

Established in 1909.

Walter Mork Senior was a Finnish imigrant who brought his metal working skills to San Francisco just after the year 1900. After the earthquake and fire of 1906 he relocated to Berkeley and started Walter Mork Company. Walter was a pillar of the community as a city council member for 20 years. He handed the company to his son Walter Junior who in turn passed it to his sons Fred and Bill Mork. Currently Fred Mork runs the company with his son Berkeley.

Fred is renowned for his technical knowledge and expertise, as well as his willingness to help both large and small customers with their thorny problems. He has a civil engineering education through Cal Poly Pomona, and was a prodigal apprentice while going through the sheet metal apprenticeship program, winning the national competition both times that he entered. He is proud not only of his business accomplishments, but of his family and his team of employees and many customers who he thinks of as his extended family.

This long time company in Berkeley does a great variety of metal work to include sheet metal work, welding, and, almost anything involving metal of any kind. I just had fabricated a replacement door for my fireplace, a door to empty the ashes out on the outside of the chimney. The old door had rusted/​corroded after many years exposed to the elements. Walter Mork did an OUTSTANDING job of making a new frame out of stainless steel, perfect welds, nice and smooth and clean. Also the latches, hinges, etc were fantastic! Sized perfect and completed when they estimated they would finish the job. The staff up front, (Melissa and Wendy) were so nice and pleasant as well. The finished product turned out to not be only a door/​metal frame, but rather a Work of Art! I have, over the years had them fabricate a variety of metal products to include gutter work for roofs, metal back splash sheets for behind sinks, etc. Their work is always to perfection, on time and of the highest quality. If you ever need any metal work done, you will not be disappointed with this fine organization!

I worked with this Firm over the last 6 months on a large project in Danville, CA. They delivered in timely fashion, and provided the material when they said they would. I recently needed custom metalwork that involved quite a bit of detail on a City project. I called Walter Mork Company again because I had great experience with them prior. Laura in the office was very helpful in the initial contact, and from there, Berk took over and met with me to review scope of work. Berk submitted multiple drawings with a couple of options that was very useful to the decision making process. The Lead Tech who came out to the job worked smart and carefully to insure a good fit of this very large stainless steel component. We as well as the City of SF building inspector are very pleased with the finished product. I would not hesitate to refer Walter Mork Company in the future.

I’d give them one star but their work is pretty good, watch out if you are looking for good customer service! Some grumpy folks here in the office, why be rude to people that want to give you business? Office could also use an upgrade to the 21st century technology wise, bringing in a drawing is a huge time waste when I could just email. You do great work, please improve customer service!

I love Walter Mork. They have done two significant jobs for us modifying disability equipment and two customer service jobs that brought them only a very few dollars. I love their aesthetic, their craftsmanship, their old world attitude to doing the job correctly or not at all.
If it is metal and there is a unique problem that you have, Walter Mork will be your best bet.

These guys are great! We have used them for 30+ years for our specialty metal fabrication needs. It works best for us to provide them with clear, written sketches and specification for what we are needing fabricated, and the specialty products we are requesting come back beautifully. We, as well as our clients are VERY happy with their work. Sheet metal work, gutter work, ornate wrought iron repair (seriously rusted from age), truck specialty metal parts come back amazingly beautiful and functional. I have even seen their work for UCB with beautiful custom steel lab tables that could easily have looked great in someone’s high end kitchen. All sorts of beautiful work going on throughout their work floor area. I cannot speak highly enough of this company. We are truly happy, long time clients.

One of the joys of living in West Berkeley is the proximity of a number of craftspersons and fabrication shops. Among my favorite is Walter Mork Company. In fixing up my new home, I have taken four different projects to them, and I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the process of dealing with them, and the outcome. The ladies out front have often sent me back to Fred (the founder’s son and current owner) for advice on optimizing my design, and I’ve benefited from his good advice The work has always been done on time with great skill and attention to detail, and at a price I’m happy to pay, especially given that this business seems to take good care of its workers. If there is a line of other clients, I always enjoy browsing around in the front office, where you can find quirky little metal sculptures of animals (made by one of the Mork family), a rack of books on teaching phonics (the owner’s wife is a teacher), and various amusing cartoons under the glass topped counter. When you leave, you pass under a pair of stainless steel gargoyles fabricated by the owner’s daughter. In a country that seems to be slowly losing its ability to make things, Walter Mork is a rarity — a century-​old family-​run small business, firmly rooted in its community, that knows how to get the job done.

On one project where his crew had misunderstood part of the task, I called him, we discussed the issue and he was right on it. It is great to be able to work with local businesses. Walter Mork has a great selection of material and their work is clean. better than a lot of other places that i have found. unfortunately i have pulled my business from them due to the lady up front. regardless if i go in or call in, i always feel that i have done her some wrong by giving them business. i agree with the other comment that «curt» is a complement. it’s truly unfortunate because i want to keep my business local but i will find someone else that can serve my needs.
