History

Established in 1980.

Ken Kirsch started his business as a personal venture around his passion for the outdoors. What began as a one-​man show has expanded to a small crew. Ken, a certified and licensed arborist, is well-​known throughout the East Bay. He has developed long-​standing relationships with his clients. Today, it’s unusual for Ken to walk the streets of Berkeley without waving a friendly hello to a familiar client.

Business Owner

Ken Kirsch moved to Berkeley in the 1970s. A former teacher and outdoor educator in the East Bay Park system, he started his tree trimming business in 1980. Over the course of the last 3+ decades, he’s built countless relationships with clients across the San Francisco Bay Area. Ken is a certified and licensed arborist. He has given various workshops on tree and shrub care for local organizations.

Ken and his crew came out in January and professionally pruned all the fruit trees and some ornamentals in our garden. Now only did they do a fantastic job, Ken was happy to tell us abut the process, and we got some good basic instruction about the process.
OK– I probably won’t go out and whack at these poor trees anymore– it is obvious that when people really know what they are doing the trees benefit! So this will become an annual ritual and I am so happy to have found this company.

Ken saved my «view life». After many years of unsuccessful discussions with the neighbor whose four branches were obscuring my Golden Gate and Bay views, I met Ken who was the neighbor’s arborist. Ken and the neighbor came and looked at the neighbor’s trees and my missing view. Ken said to the neighbor, «I have been taking care of your view for 25 years, do you think that I would let any trimming that I did on Barbara’s behalf interfere with your privacy?». And the deal was struck. Ken has managed my view and the neighbor’s privacy for many years now. I have referred him to many of my real estate clients and colleagues and I have only heard great things from those who used hi and his able crew.

Ken comes yearly to prune our various trees and to trim our big, long, tall hedge on our property line. We’ve used him for about 6 years. He’s friendly, knowledgeable, reliable, and respectful of our gardens.

If you love your trees, this is the right arborist for you. Ken is very knowledgeable about trees (and many other garden plants and pests as well), so you can trust his advice about how to care for your trees, when to trim, when not to trim, and generally how to keep trees happy and healthy.
We have a large Liquid Amber in the backyard and were concerned that it might go down in a storm. Ken talked himself out of a job by explaining how he could tell it was a very healthy tree and did not even need trimming.
We have learned so much about trees, plant diseases and insects from Ken over the 30 years he has cared for our trees. We would never trust anyone else with the job.

Ken and his crew have been trimming our trees for at least 20 years, and we have always been completely satisfied with their work. We have a wide variety of trees from citrus to tall deciduous, and Ken has always cared for them all with skill and respect for our wishes as well as the needs of the trees. In addition to being highly skilled, knowledgeable and trustworthy, Ken is very personable and a pleasure to do business with.
We have a row of trees next to a property line where our neighbors want as much open space as possible and we want as much screening as possible, and Ken has managed to satisfy both!
When our lime tree showed highly unusual symptoms, Ken made a point of researching the condition and checking back with us repeatedly.
I can’t recommend Ken highly enough!

We’ve used his services for tree work for decades and have always learned a great deal and gotten good value. His crew is attentive and careful while going out on a limb to get us a little more light filtering through the canopy. They understand safety, biology and neighbors, all of which matter when it comes to urban pruning.
