History

Established in 2002.

envelope architecture+design is a collaborative design firm inclusive of outside disciplines and individuals. All of our relationships begin with a desire to respect and engage people’s strengths, skills and experiences. We are deep listeners, critical thinkers, thoughtful interpreters, and prolific generators of ideas. We seek to inspire rather than dictate. We actively solicit the thoughts of our clients, the skilled makers of our work, and other creative actors to inform the process of transmuting ideas into substance.

Business Owner

Douglas Burnham is principal and founder of envelope a+d, a San Francisco Bay Area architecture and design firm. A practicing architect for over twenty years, Mr. Burnham is a graduate of Cornell University’s School of Architecture where he received the Charles Goodwin Sands Memorial Prize, awarded to one student in the graduating class for outstanding final thesis work.

Burnham’s work has been published in magazines and journals including The New York Times, dwell, Architectural Record, and Interior Design, among others. He frequently gives lectures in the U.S. and Europe on the work of envelope a+d.
