History

Established in 1995.

Daniel Fries began playing bass guitar professionally in 1995, and met collaborator JP Buongiorno in 2000. Together, they formed the Band «Funkiri,» playing Funk, Blues, and Jazz. In the meantime, Daniel had taken to playing Spanish Classical and Flamenco guitar, and when their touring led Funkiri to Sevilla, Spain in 2003, JP also took to the Spanish style of playing, complimenting the Brazilian Bossa Nova and Samba styles he was already playing. As the two grew musically together, and their playing styles evolved, the guitar core of Trio Paz was born. Between Daniel’s gigs with Flamenco dancers and singers, and JP’s club gigs, the two found a unique blend of Passionate Spanish Guitar, Latin and Brazilian rhythms, and the cool intelligence of Jazz — with a pinch of Blues thrown in. When, in 2007, they met virtuoso percussionist and drum innovator Surya Patri, Trio Paz was born, and they have been delighting audiences with infectious Spanish/​Latin/​Brazilian/​American music ever since

Daniel Fríes’ alluring Spanish Flamenco-​inspired guitar music ranges from exciting and uplifting to deep and dreamy. In addition to his solo material and studio recordings, he plays regularly with his groups Trio Paz (.com) and Alta Cali (.net). A San Francisco native, Daniel especially enjoys playing his Spanish Guitar music in the Bay Area — for flamenco shows, events and weddings, though his work takes him all around California, North America, and beyond. Other musical projects include Persian singer Hamed Nikpay’s «All Is Calm.”“Kabbalah Dream Orchestra,» «Basquerole,» «Funkiri,» «The Something Experience,» Afghan singer «Kamran,» and Italian Pop Diva «L’Aura.» Daniel studied flamenco guitar in Spain with many teachers, including Paco Peña, Paco Serrano, and Manolo Sanlucar. He lives in Berkeley with his wife and daughters.

We are so lucky to have such an incredibly talented guitarist like Daniel in the Bay Area. He’s got remarkable musical skills combined with professionalism and a great sense of humor (it’s not just about the talent, personality is just as important and he’s got them both!). As the Production Manager for the 38th annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, I hired Daniel to play in the Palace of Fine Arts lobby for our three pre-​show music sets during our festival opening weekend. This was in addition to his main stage performance with the SF Flamenco Dance Company. He captivated our audiences with his mesmerizing guitar pieces and left them wanting more. Daniel and his band, Trio Paz, absolutely killed it at our wedding reception! We were looking to have upbeat, fun and different music to be played during the cocktail hour at our wedding, and Trio Paz delivered that.
Working with and booking Daniel was simple and easy. He gave me a call and we had a conversation where he went over with me what style of music we wanted and how we wanted it to sound. I told him what we were hoping for and he said, «That’s not a problem. We can absolutely do that!» It was seamless every step of the way.
Their music gave the reception an energy and buzz, which was exactly what we were hoping we’d get from hiring him to perform. Daniel is an incredible guitarist and the rest of his band members were equally as great! Everyone from our wedding came to us both during and after telling us just how much fun their music was and what an incredible addition it brought to the whole evening!
When you have a sound or a vision in your head, it’s sometimes hard to create it in real life, but I can wholeheartedly say that Daniel and Trio Paz did exactly that. Now I just need another event so I can hire him again! :)

First of all, Daniel is an amazing guitarist! We hired him to play solo Spanish guitar for a retirement party for one of our VPs. Daniel arrived early to the restaurant and was set up with all of his equipment before I arrived to meet him (despite the pouring rain!). He was very professional and friendly and easy to work with. The music he played added a memorable ambiance to our event — several people came to me after the event to say how much they loved his music — including the guest of honor. For my work, we recently had an executive retreat to San Francisco and needed a flamenco guitarist for an evening bay cruise. Daniel was quick to respond to our emails and was great about ironing out all of the details. He had a reasonable rate and also brought along a second guitar player, Jean Paul, to play with him as well for a little extra. The night of the event, Daniel was great. We were excited to have Daniel and his trio play for our wedding, but the actual experience BLEW US AWAY on every level:
1. Overall quality: We wanted great music that was fun and different, and Flamenco seemed like it could bring a wonderful spirit. I’d heard great things about these guys, and of course we listened to their clips, but the live experience was better than we could have imagined. It created a wonderful background spirit for the party, but I and many other guests found ourselves pausing occasionally in the middle of a conversation to tune into the fact these guys are take-​your-​breath-​away, tingles-​on-​the-​back-​of-​your-​neck good.
2. Reading the crowd: One things we had heard about these guys is that they are amazingly attuned to what is going on with a crowd and know how to complement rather than overshadow the event. And, wow, are they good at it! For example, they were up on a deck above us when my bride and I arrived, and some friends talked us into doing a tango on the street. They got wind of what we were up to and were playing a tango. When we were talking at dinner, their music was not overpowering and created the perfect background to conversation. When the crowd was getting more energized, they ran with it. It was like they were one with the pulse of the group.
3. These guys could get a guy in a coma to dance: One of our biggest fears was that our straight-​laced family and friends would not be up for dancing to unfamiliar music. Maybe we should stick with something everyone knows? Were we wrong!!! People couldn’t get on the dance floor fast enough! They were dancing between courses — two-​year-​olds, eighty-​year-​olds, and everybody in between.
Bottom line: Our wedding exceeded our expectations, and these guys were a big part of why. Hope you have the chance to have the same experience!
One other point about working with these guys:
They are responsible, reliable professionals. Organizing and pulling this off with them was absolutely seamless.

Daniel and his trio played for our garden wedding party yesterday and were FANTASTIC! Our guests were thrilled and so were we! Many asked who the trio was and where we’d found them. As requested, the music started off more quietly so that guests could socialize, then — once the paella and cake were eaten — the trio cranked it up and we cheered and danced into the night.
Daniel is an excellent communicator, so details are easily taken care of. He and his group were on time and did everything promised. I would recommend and hire them again in a flash. They are true professionals, and very nice to boot!

Hiring Daniel Fries was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding. My wife loves Flamenco guitar and after a bit of online research, we found Daniel. He was incredibly prompt and professional in his communication and was able work with our budget. He even sent samples for us to listen to and choose from. During our ceremony, instead of traditional or DJ music, Daniel played the most beautiful solo guitar music while everyone walked down the aisle. Then during cocktail hour, he was joined by his rhythm guitarist and they played AMAZING flamenco music. It was so beautiful, etherial, and most importantly, unique — many guests commented on how incredible they were. Bottom Line: I HIGHLY recommend Daniel and his musicians for your next wedding or event!
Background: I’m a white boy who just married a much more sophisticated Latina. We were married in California, but have been living in Iowa while she finishes Medical School. This means that we had to find guitarists for the event, without being able to meet with them in person or show them the wedding location. It also means that I needed lots of help figuring out exactly what I wanted in terms of the performance.
The Result: Daniel helped pick out the perfect music to play for the ceremony, and he did a wonderful job entertaining guests during the cocktail hour. He chose BEAUTIFUL, lively music that everyone enjoyed, as well as the perfect traditional songs that my wife’s family in particular appreciated. They were able to pick these songs on their own (I had no helpful input), and on the day of the wedding they set up at two different locations and played wonderfully without needing my help at all.
I would recommend Daniel and his band to anyone throwing any type of event that requires beautiful, modern and traditional guitar work. He is helpful, professional, and talented. Thank you for your fantastic work Daniel!

I cater and my client was looking to hire a band for the party. I did a bit of research and found Daniel Fries. I watched the bands music on you tube and knew that it would make the party, which it did.
He was easy to work with and made planning the music a breeze.
He arrived early, dressed perfectly for the party. He and a band mate brought all the sound equipment, and set up and began a wonderful set of guitar music.
It truly made the party. I heard so many compliments about the music, the hosts even told me the next day a neighbor left flowers for them saying how great over hearing the music from their house was.

We hired Daniel two weeks ago to play at our wedding in Berkeley. We loved his style and music, and were so pleased that he was part of our wedding. He played causal background music prior to our wedding ceremony, and then started a 1.5 hour set during our ‘happy hour’ before dinner. It was the perfect ambiance music, with just the right tone of upbeat and social. We gave Daniel no guidance, but he doesn’t need any!

I’m about to cry just writing this post because the ceremony music was just absolutely BEAUTIFUL! We just got married last Friday and we hired Daniel for our wedding ceremony and cocktail hour. Firstly, months before the wedding, I requested a song for him to learn as our processional. He did it, no problem. Then about a month before the wedding, I decided I wanted my own song for when I walked down the aisle. I sent him a couple samples of what I wanted, no sheet music and BOOM. No problem. Cut to the ceremony: I just absolutely died at how beautiful he sounded and it truly truly truly made the start to our wedding just magical. Words can’t even begin to express.
If you want your guests and yourself, even, to be wowed at an event, hire DANIEL!

Trio Paz played for our wedding – both the ceremony and the reception – and we haven’t yet come down from the clouds.
What could possibly be more romantic, more transporting, more magical than Spanish guitars under a starry sky? If you’d heard them, you’d never again have tolerance for some cheesy jazz combo at a wedding reception.
I couldn’t get over it: These are recording artists! They record CDs, they do concerts – what were they doing at our WEDDING?
But play they did, and they were the GREATEST. Daniel was a joy to work with – as others have written here, he’s an insanely great musician, but also incredibly knowledgeable and flexible and communicative and prompt. He even learned – and MEMORIZED – a new song I wrote for my bride, to sing to her during the ceremony. The guests haven’t stopped talking about it.
