Our laboratory offers asbestos testing services for identifying positive fibers in popcorn ceiling, floor tiles, paint chips, drywall, mastic, dust, and other asbestos containing materials (ACM).

We also specialize in lead paint, soil, dust, and air sample analyses.

As the largest transmission electron microscopy (TEM) facility in the United States, ATEM Labs is the leader in naturally occuring asbestos (NOA), i.e. rock and soil samples.

We are available after hours and over the weekend upon request. Samples can be turned around as fast as two hours* upon consultation.

* Please contact us or drop in if you require a rush analysis. 2 – 8 hour turnaround times are restricted to certain samples and analytical methods (please visit our website and contact us to determine the type of method you need).

We are AIHA and NVLAP accredited.

Asbestos TEM Laboratories, Inc., founded by R. Mark Bailey, PG, is a professional environmental analytical laboratory that provides the highest quality analyses of asbestos and lead.

We utilize well-developed analytical techniques of optical microscopy, electron microscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy to provide expert environmental testing services to environmental consultants, industrial hygienists, abatement contractors, environmental engineers, geologists, contractors and homeowners.

Business Owner

Mr. Bailey founded Asbestos TEM Laboratories, Inc. in 1989. He is responsible for overall financial and lab management of Asbestos TEM Laboratories, Inc. Mr. Bailey is an expert in TEM analysis of asbestos using XRD and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy techniques. He spent two years as the Vice President of National Asbestos Laboratories where he established the electron microscopy facility and oversaw laboratory operations. Mr. Bailey is a Professional Geologist and his experience in field geology includes: mineralogy/crystallography, minerals exploration and mining, drilling, field sampling, and geochemistry.

Mr. Bailey is well regarded as a leader in NOA industry and serves as the 2012 Co-Chairperson of the AEG NOA Symposium. He was the 2005 Chairperson and organizer of the «Naturally-Occurring Asbestos Hazards: Geology, Regulatory Issues & Methods of Identification & Assessment» professional meeting, sponsored by the Geological Society of America.

I came here on a Monday morning to get my popcorn ceilings tested from a 1977 home I had just purchased in Concord. The person behind the desk was friendly and answered all my questions. I ordered the 2 – 4 rush hour processing. I drove home to Concord, which took me about an hour, and my results were already in my e-mail! Luckily I had no asbestos, so I started scraping the ceilings that day. I’d definitely recommend Asbestos TEM Laboratories.

TEM Lab is fantastic. Don’t have to drive to Hayward (next closest lab) — pricing for 24 hour rush for lead was half another respected lab, and they actually got me results the same day. I got an email AND a phone call that gave me the results WITH interpretation so I knew immediately how much of a problem we had. Everyone’s been responsive and lovely. For us, this has been an excellent experience.

This company is fantastic. I dropped my sample off at 12 noon and had a written report emailed to me by 2pm. But even better yet, I had asked if they would call me with the results — They did! And it only took one hour! The women who called me was extremely knowledgeable, very helpful, and «nice,» too! It was worth the small additional fee.
I highly recommend this company and highly recommend that anyone (especially Rossmoor residents) have their pop-corn ceiling’s tested before talking to anyone about removal. Every Contractor, pop-corn removal company, drywall company, etc…(everyone) I asked about the pop-corn on my new Rossmoor co-op insisted it had asbestos and you had to pay $ 3000 to $ 3500 to remove it by a Hi-Vac company.
This is NOT True. I had under .10 (almost nothing) of asbestos in my ceiling. I called the EPA and AIr Quality and was told ONLY 1 or above requires special handling everything under 1 is considered solid wastes (NON-toxic, and NOT hazard waste) and is considered «NORMAL» trash!

I collected a sample and drove to their office. I talked to the person at the desk and asked for expedited service. I paid 60 bucks for the faster turnaround. (Normally it is 45 bucks.)
Alas, the sample had asbestos in it, but the speed of service was great. I dropped the thing off at 8AM and they emailed the results at 4:45.
I’ll definitely use their services in the future.

Very poor business practices! I needed testing of popcorn ceiling before finalizing the purchase of a property. Hoping that the 2 yr old 1-star Unilocal helped the business improve, I called and spoke to a friendly, informative worker. So I filled out their online application, faxing it in. (There was no way to submit it online.) When someone else dropped the sample off, the fax was already there. They promised 3 days for emailed results, so after 10 days, I called. They hadn’t even done the test. They supposedly tried to page me (I had received several pages that day, so I don’t believe that they tried to page me.) They were trying to contact me to get payment before the test was done, though their application asks where to bill. They also had my phone numbers, address, full name and email written twice. If they needed pre-payment the application should not have asked for a billing address, and they could have told that to the delivery person. If they couldn’t read the contact information (which is what they now say), they should have asked for clarification from the delivery person. They just didn’t bother.

This morning, my husband and I closed on our first home, which needs quite a bit of work, including removal of popcorn ceilings. We’re on a tight time frame, and the ceilings need to be done first. My husband found several asbestos testing places in the East Bay who would do a rush job, and deliver results the same day if he got the sample to them by noon.
He dropped a sample off for rush processing at 9:15 in the morning and paid the rush fee.
At noon, he received a call from Paul informing him that TEM had a major power outage the day before and probably wouldn’t be able to get the testing done the same day.
I called back to speak to Paul, who first tried to convince me that they had told my husband this in the morning when he dropped of the rush job and paid the rush fee. (Of course they did not, as he would have simply driven over to the other facility.) I explained our situation as nicely as I could – we have full time jobs so we can only do the work on the weekend, so waiting the weekend would effectively put us back a week. He said no, we’d have to wait. I asked if they’d refund the rush fee if they didn’t get it done today and he said he wouldn’t even do that, all we could do was cancel the order. His tone of voice through this was very combative, arrogant, and hostile.
I have not written a complaint about a company in many years. I haven’t felt the need to. If you need asbestos testing, do not use these jerks!
