History

Established in 2014.

The concept of Zocalisa™ began as the brainchild of Jeff and Alissa Dickey during their 25th wedding anniversary trip to Costa Rica. Over breakfast coffee, the owner of a bed and breakfast where they stayed was discussing cacao bean sourcing with another guest and the Dickeys became intrigued with the idea of producing high quality artisan chocolate. They began learning how to make chocolate and Jeff is now a chocolatier, graduate of Ecole Chocolat.

The name Zocalisa™ (zo-cah-LEE-sa) is a contraction of the Mayan word for chocolate, xocalati (pronounced zocalati) and a variant spelling of Alissa’s name. When Alissa was in Costa Rica on an adventure tour, the Serendipity guides would congratulate her after a successful rafting run, rappel, or other activity by calling out «ah — LEE — sa!!». In the Dickey household, the nickname has stuck. Zocalisa™ is their next big adventure, so Jeff and Alissa decided to incorporate it in the concept.
