History
Established in 2012.
Shaw Method can trace its origins to 1987 when two Alexander Technique trainees started to explore the experience of swimming from a new perspective. Steven Shaw, a former competitive swimmer, and Limor Shaw, a professional basketball player, experimented with applying Alexander Technique principles to swimming.
Steven and Limor completed their Alexander Technique training in 1990 and continued to develop their approach to swimming. They found that the greater body awareness fostered by Shaw Method increased the benefits of swimming and enabled their pupils to transform their relationship with the water.
Today, most Shaw Method instruction is based in the UK, but there are a growing number of teachers around the world. Shaw Method is taught in Austin, TX by Molly Johnson, M. AmSAT, PhD through the Integrated Motion Studio for the Alexander Technique.
Meet the Business Owner
Molly J.
Business Owner
Molly started swimming for summer recreation in the lakes near where she grew up in central Missouri. Her love of the water motivated her to study Red Cross swimming instruction and to work as a lifeguard after college before moving on to work as a personal fitness trainer for many years.
Molly has been an Alexander Technique instructor since 2001 and received a PhD in Neuroscience and Behavior in 2010 from the University of Massachusetts to study posture and coordination in healthy individuals and people with neurological issues. She also received a postdoctoral fellowship at the Washington University School of Medicine to study what predisposes people to back pain.
Molly has studied Shaw Method swimming since 2004 and was certified by Steven Shaw to teach in 2013. As a Shaw Method swimming instructor, she is excited to help people of all swimming levels to experience the joy and ease she feels in the water.
