Clean restaurant, fast service, free delicious chips and salsa. I ordered a meat-free burrito and it was really tasty! Not to mention inexpensive. Good filling-to-tortilla ratio. I recommend this place!

Good, authentic, Mexican food. Good portions, well priced. Dine-in or take out. Very friendly staff.

I ordered the California burrito which comes with carne asada, fries, rice, pinto beans, jack cheese, and hot salsa. Now, I’m not terribly picky when it comes to burritos It doesn’t take much to please me, especially after a day of snowboarding. Unfortunately, what I ordered didn’t really have much flavor at all. The burrito was very dry, and tasteless. The carne asada was really average. The salsa just wasn’t there. Very average food, to put it nicely. Even though the prices are decent, you might want to think again before ordering a burrito here.

What a nice surprise. We were looking for an alternative to a very crowded, over-priced Ikeda on our way home from Tahoe. Stumbled upon El Portal. Huge portions, great prices, excellent food, and quick, friendly service. We had the California burrito, carne asada tacos, and a chimichanga. All delicious.

I ate last night there in my way Back From Reno Nevada and it was delicious the food and service A+. Totally recommend this palace. I had carne Asada plate it was really good. As soon as you enter this place you know they serve good food because as start the chips and salsa are good and delicious smell of food. We were a party of 6 plus 2 kids and they serve our food fast and now who had each plate! Even the owner was on top of evening making sure we were serve well. Very clean the dinning area and bathroom very well Maintain!

I’ve been coming here for 30+ years. Now I bring my family whenever we are in Auburn or passing through. The chips and salsa are fantastic. Usually, I get the two-item combo with an enchilada and a tamale(both delicious), but today I had a burrito and was equally satisfied with my choice. The service is great and the space is comfortable — plenty of room, tvs with sports, clean bathrooms. Overall, this has to be one of my all-time favorite places to eat!

I read a lot of mixed reviews before stopping by. The Burrito Banado was huge and filled with carnitas. They had a few small tvs on airing the NFL game. I would come by again if I was looking for a quick bite. Definitely need to try the Al Pastor next time.

I just moved to the area & was desperate to find an authentic Mexican restaurant… I’ve had several dishes here & they’re all stellar.(Lengua is by far the best I’ve ever had!!!) if you’re a gringo that’s always wanted to try it but think it would be weird, tough& rubbery, then this is the place to try it. You’ll be spoiled so don’t try ordering it anywhere else, if you love it as much as I do. Seasoned & prepared to a subtle, pillowy, melt –in-your-mouth perfection. The staff & service is great… They’re always prompt & if I have to wait a bit for the preparation of a delicious meal, I certainly don’t mind.

Called to get a quote for a catering order and was given a great price. When I called back to place the order the price more than doubled. Needless to say, won’t ever eat there again! Many options for authentic Mexican food around and they are no longer one of my go to places!

Stopped in after camping in Auburn area. Had the California burrito. To my surprise it had crispy french fries in it which was awesome. Service was good and the prices are reasonable. I will definitely go back next time i’m in the area.

For authenticity, El Portal in Auburn is consistently excellent. While it isn’t fancy and doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, the tste is great, the orders are brought out quickly. We recommend the chimichangas and taco salad.

I’ve never had salsa that had onion as the MAIN ingredient. The California burrito has French fries inside. The al pastor burrito was just ok. I would not recommend this place. Service was average although they are friendly. Not a place to stop if you’re looking for authentic Mexican food. The beer was cold.

Husband got the chicken torta. Said it was tasty but too much bread. Not for the carb conscious. Based on the reviews I stuck with the tacos. Ordered the al pastor and lengua, paired with pineapple jarritos. I was extremely satisfied by the taste and quality, especially given its just in a strip mall in a small community. Hello, it’s neighbors are KFC and McD’s, give this place a break with the 2 stars and«not the best tacos I’ve ever had». Haters gonna hate.

Service was slow, but food was good! And it was busy, so obviously this place is popular. Hence the reason service was slow trying to keep up w everyone. I’d stop here again

I was really excited to eat here after I read the reviews. I wish I could rate the food, but I cancelled my burrito order because they wanted to charge me $ 1.25 for a side of salsa. They will not give you any salsa to go.

Caught in between the 2 and 3 stars triangle lays El Portal Taqueria. The meals my family ordered varied but, the end conclusions we’re all the same. Even though the reviews favored El Portal’s food, it leaves you both hungry and dissatisfied in the portions size and food flavors areas — Two HUGE areas normally associated with most good to great taquerias. I would venture to say one of the possible reasons for the high stars and positive reviews here are probably the demographic make up or possible lack of diversity in the area. Or, it could simply be a lack of taquerias in the Auburn area. Whatever the reason(s), the food here at El Portal Taqueria in my opinion was a tad below average. But hey; don’t stop your quest to find the best.

Well, typically I’m a fan of this restaurant and eat here frequently. Today’s visit was discouraging. The two girls working could not have made it more obvious that they had no concern to take my order. One brought water and then said she’s be back. She got busy, then caught sight of me(the other server had looked over at least 3 times) and still made no attempt to come back to the table. 10 minutes and several glances and no service?! Lame…

Strip mall Mexican can be hit or miss. Even at the better ones they often stretch the menu to cater to all… And catering to the lowest common denominator is all too prevalent of a mistake. Stick to what you do well and forget the rest! Here is no exception. Tacos are available as street, super, hard… Etc. the star here are the street tacos. These are the old school cantina tacos… No excess iceberg lettuce… No shredded cheese… This is soft tortilla meat and a touch of onion and cilantro. Great preparation and amazing flavores. Also try the garlic shrimp. Another tasty choice.

El Portal now falls into a tie for Second Place in the Auburn taqueria genre. We still recommend to anyone who’s in a hurry and don’t want to find the Number One taqueria in downtown Auburn(at 760 Lincoln Way).
