Dr. Ray believes the patient needs information before treatment decisions can be reached. Recommendations are made by the doctors; but, decisions are made by the patients. This philosophy goes a long way towards lessening the anxiety of going to a new dentist. The office is particularly child friendly and several of their chair side assistants have a pediatric background. Prevention is the best medicine so their hygienists take the time to explain gum health and the benefits of fluoride. Patients also seem to like their new smile created by «white» fillings and veneers. Dr. Ron Ray moved his practice to the Farmwell Hunt Plaza in Ashburn in early 1997. Prior to this, he worked in Countryside for two years and had served three years in the U.S. Army (one year of which was in Advanced Education in the General Dentistry training program). He is a native of Northern Virginia and graduated from George Mason University and attended Dental School at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

I’ve been going to Dr Ray’s for a little over a year. Can’t begin to explain how impressed I am with this team. I work in a customer service industry and I can tell you babies cry when they are hungry, gassy, sleepy, but go unheard when happy. The fact this team has gotten soo many positive reviews on Unilocal acts to illustrate their wealth of knowledge, professionalism, and customer care.
That having been said, my very last piece of dental work will be completed today. Appears a crown we planned to use temporary adhesive on has fallen out as expected. No concerns there. Yet again, still couldnt be more impressed as Dr Navar has requested to see me same day to finalize the procedure.
Going to miss everyone across the board as I will be moving out of the area soon. (Is Richmond to Ashburn too far of a commute for Dental?)

I’ve been a patient here for nearly 15 years. Overall, I’ve received great care and feel they are thorough and considerate.
Regular cleanings are almost always pleasant; they are fast and I’ve only waited for a dentist following cleanings a handful of times over the years. I highly recommend requesting Drs. Ray and Ponchione for an exam if they are available. I find both of them to be highly knowledgable and easy to talk with.
The front desk staff are very welcoming, and are great about looking up insurance inquiries and quotes for procedures. They’ll call you to confirm and reschedule appointments as well.
My only negative note would be related to a root canal procedure I had performed about a year ago by Dr. Navar. I wasn’t as impressed with her bedside manner as I have been with both Dr. Ray and Dr. Ponchione. I expressed concern several times of a loose tooth feeling, and called during off hours over pain issues and a potential infection. Both times, Dr. Navar seemed to brush off my concerns. I just didn’t feel she was genuine or able to communicate effectively with me.

Have you ever loved the staff at a dental office? Here’s why I do. The staff at Dr. Ray and Associates are patient, attentive, responsive, fun and they’ve shown time and again that they care about my situation. If that weren’t enough, Dr. Ray is amazing. He takes the time to learn about my situation, he presents alternative treatments when appropriate and discusses the pros and cons of each. While I’m in ’”the chair” he announces and/or explains exactly what he’s doing, and how it may effect me. This doesn’t mean that I like all the sensations that he thrusts upon me but hey, he’s a dentist with a job to do in my mouth.
I had a full mouth reconstruction over the course of about a year and a half. Even though I was probably a pest at times, returning to the office repeatedly, I was always welcomed warmly, when I needed an emergency appointment (and that was quite often during this project), a time was always made available for me, even on as little as 15 minutes notice.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Dr. Navar. She’s the dentist who tried to show me for years why a full mouth reconstruction would be a wise move for me. It took a while for me to come around, but now that it’s all done, I love my new teeth and the smile that it shows to my wife, daughter and the rest of the world. Thank you Dr. Ray and Associates, you guys are fantastic!

There is nothing outstanding or special about this dental practice, in my opinion.
Sooooo, when they began cancelling on the day of appointments, as they have with me and my husband easily a dozen or two times over the past six years, and then turn around and try to charge us the mere one time we need to emergency cancel on them, it’s time to shop for a new dentist.
In the last year or two, a few red flags caught my eye. I grew suspicious when the dentist tried to upsell me «Invisalign» braces on my straight teeth. I neither asked for nor need orthodontic work. Been there, done that. People often compliment my straight teeth. I’ve been lucky in that I’ve never really had any dental concerns to speak of. And I’m lucky in that I’ve always had dental insurance.
The usually very neutral hygienist tried pushing a special high-end electric toothbrush on me at the end of a visit. After my questioning, she admitted that the cheaper versions available for ½ the cost at Target and Giant were just as good.
So, when the latest dig occurred, when the receptionist shrieking into the phone that I should know that I WILL BE CHARGED $ 50! for this cancellation, I wrote a letter to the dentist and called it quits.
The dental practice itself is fine. Their practice of dentistry is sound, I’m sure. It’s the little things that mean a lot, that in this case, weren’t there.

I have been going to this office for over ten years, and out of loyalty or laziness, I have never thought to try going anywhere else. The only reason I would even consider doing such a thing is that it is so far out of the way; that said, it’s only twice per year. Anyway, I love Dr. Ray.
I love that he never tells me I have cavities. I love that once I went in for a cleaning after having had a horrible tear-inducing weekend and told the hygienist to ask Dr. Ray to go easy on me, and he told me I had a cavity just to mess with me (I didn’t). Then he invited me to join some sort of sports recreation league to get my mind off of things; he seemed to be genuinely concerned/helpful, not just making nice. I love that I saw him in Potbelly once, and he knew my name. I always assume doctors just know who I am because they are reading it off of a chart.
I also love the hygienist I have had for a while now, Laurie. Request her.
The only thing I don’t love is that Dr. Ray seems to have fewer hours these days, and there are a few new dentists. I had a new, young dentist yesterday, and she was also very nice and told me I had no cavities — yay!
All in all, my experiences at this office have always been issue-free. They have pretty decent magazines in the waiting area, too, although I rarely have to wait. They are punctual and professional.
Highly recommended.
