Island Sushi

Several of the sushi chefs are unbelievably slow at making sushi. If we stopped in at lunch and saw certain ones working, we’d walk back out because we’d know we’d be there forever waiting for stuff to be made.
The price has increased so much! This last time, we spent $ 71 for four of us to eat (and that was after a discount because my kids didn’t eat much). That was with two of the special Asian sodas, fried Oreos, and a dessert roll, which you have to pay extra for. Those used to just be set out at random times on the boats. I was stunned by the check because I hadn’t realized the price has gone up so much per person before we ate. Never again!
I recommend Fuji Sushi over this place. It’s a family owned business, the chef makes sushi very quickly so they never run out of varieties to choose from, the sushi tastes a lot better, and it only cost $ 41 for a family of four to eat there (and that’s including sodas and there’s no extra charge for dessert).

We have been routine diners for months. Loved the atmosphere, food and staff. Over past few months prices have gradually increased and now at $ 20. Ok we can live with that because great food and staff. Recently they pulled all the goodies of the buffet like egg rolls, deep fried Oreos, fried wantons with cheese and cheesecake… now all that stuff is ala carte on top of you dinner and drinks. Price point and lack of variety has pushed from a solid 4 stars down to a three and almost a two. We won’t be back unless the variety of goodies return to the boats.

They raised their prices, now it comes with a decent looking menu (the appearance not the actual items to order!) I stop going because it was pricey for below to average sushi :/​12 per person would be reasonable, considering its raw, easily made food. (It seems even the chefs there are interchangeable and all have about the same amount of skill (which isn’t saying much).

Do not go to the one in Depere! I went with a friend for dinner last night, her suggestion, for the all you can eat sushi. We were told a half hour wait and it took at least 45 minutes, another ten to be greeted after we were seated. We ordered immediately since we had so much time to look over the menu and it took well over a half hour to get our three rolls. The service was mediocre at best and the sushi was just decent, very Americanized. Overall, our dinner there took two and a half hours, just for DINNER no drinks or anything else. We didn’t eat as much as we wanted because our second roll also took a half an hour to come out and we were not willing to wait through another round. We were not apologized to for the long wait or offered any compensation or free appetizer… nothing. If there was a delay in the kitchen that is something you tell your customers up front so we could have at least decided if we wanted to stay or not instead of staying under a falsehood. I will never go back to this establishment.

Although I did enjoy the sushi I had for lunch today I was sad to see you raised your prices and did not update online. If you post these prices yourself (not a customers post) you should honor them. Going from 11.99 to 19.99 was a very unexpected surprise. Please update your pricing or maybe bring back a lunch special and maybe you won’t have as you said and I quote «sorry we are not very busy»
Also when on lunch from work (m-​f) you have a limited amount of time. 2 rolls (4 pieces each) in 40 mins is not what I would expect paying 20 $ for. The pace was rather slow and bc there was only 2 other couples there it shouldn’t have take. 15 mins or more btwn rolls
I must say though the flavor of the sushi rolls were fun and the chefs were very personable! You must try one of the deep fried Oreos or dessert rolls! Yum!

Service was extremely slow. Our sushi took forever to make. When we got our sushi, it was 4 small pieces of sushi. It’s a BUFFET but they limited how much food we got. We’re not cows or anything, but we were hungry! Four pieces of sushi every 20 minutes isn’t gonna cut it! We definitely did not get service and food quality equal to $ 16.99/person. Sushi makers were so short staffed that one of the sushi makers told us she would not take our order yet even though we were there first. Sushi makers and back room people were shouting across the whole dining room area. They were screaming «RICE!!! CHICKEN!!! SHRIMP!!!». They were not calling, they were literally, shouting at the top of their heads. Sushi was low quality and white washed. Brat and cheddar cheese sushi? That’s not sushi; that’s American food. Boats were filled with poorly made food such as extremely low quality sushi, crab ragoons with a red sugary sauce, and extremely small portions of seaweed salad. NOT RETURNING.

To be clear, it isn’t possible to serve real sushi all you can for $ 17. What they can do is serve a small selection of sushi rolls, appetizers and deserts.
From other reviews you probably read about the boats, it’s true this is a fun atmosphere and everyone is very friendly. The dress is very casual, some were dressed nice but others more like they were at a buffet. You CAN order your own rolls but it does also take forever, and what you CAN order is where some including myself would say this isn’t really sushi.
First, you aren’t going to get anything other than the cheapest fish… Tuna, crab, shrimp, eel, some salmon I think. Also, when you get any fish it will be wrapped in rice and typically loaded with other things. Use of avocados and cream cheese in rolls border on the ridiculous. Now, I love a good California roll or even Philadelphia, but when it is alongside healthy sushi. Here the California roll is not very good because of the quality of fish. So it’s like a double whammy. Other things that make this not really a wise choice for healthy food or a real sushi meal are deep fried rolls, I have to stress the use of cream cheese AGAIN, chicken, brats, jalapenos etc in rolls. Lastly, I’ll leave you with what one seemingly single mother let her ten year old boy brag to the owner about eating last night.

4 deep fried Oreos. These are delicious but humans should not eat much less a kid. Batter an Oreo, then when deep fried the cookie essentially just soaks up oil like a sponge. This is in addition to a bunch of other rolls of course, this is not what an seventy pound boy should eat for dinner… ever.
In conclusion, this was a try it once place for my girlfriend and I. People have been telling me for near a year how much they love it, but I figured they didn’t really knew good sushi so it took me a while and my skepticism was completely justified.

This is our favorite family sushi restaurant! You pay a flat rate and eat all the sushi you can handle. This is a huge savings for us, since my husband can put away the sushi! Lol.
The restaurant is small, but the format is similar to a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant, with the dishes rotating around the table and you take the plate that you want. The fun touch is that instead of a conveyor, there are little boats that float around with the plates on them. HUGE plus for my kiddo!
The sushi chefs stand in the middle and keep adding plates to the boats. The variety of the rolls is limited, but the ingredients are fresh and you can ask the chefs to make you a special roll of your choice. Some of these are at an additional cost, but I have found a few that are not!
If you want to try sushi for your first time or want to save money on sushi, this is your place!

This place is amazing! All the rolls were outstanding! I especially enjoyed the mt Fuji roll. The Monday date nights are priced perfectly and although it is a bit more expensive, you are paying for the wonderful fresh quality. Even the egg rolls were awesome! I recommend coming here on a quieter night if you would like to tinker around with food choices as it takes a while for the chefs to get around to you (makes sense!). My only «complaints» are that we had our drinks siting near empty a few times and I think they should list more rolls (perhaps the basics, too) for novices to pick up on! :) amazing place and we’ll be back more than we should mention! This place made my husband love sushi! :)

I actually left after looking at the options. The only reason being that it’s only rolls here. They don’t serve actual nagiri or sushi. Their options are either tuna or crab and one salmon roll. I wouldn’t really call it sushi as most everything looked fried. When you think sushi it should be fresh and healthy.

A great experience for people experimenting with sushi. The chefs make the dining fun and you are able to try as much as you want. The boats add to the fun and charm of this place.

Awesome. Even after the reviews I was skeptical. Sushi floats by in boats. You order rolls and half go to you and half in the boats. So the boats reflect what is being ordered. Lots of deserts also. My favorite was the krabby Patti roll.

If you’re in the valley and hungry for sushi this is THE place to be. I’ve tried each sushi restaurant around here at least twice and this is by far the best one. Fresh products, excellent chefs/​service/​atmosphere, and at the end of the meal it’s the best value too. Appetizer, meal, and dessert are included in the price and with how much sushi I eat, it comes to 25 cents per piece of roll! That’s insane! You will be impressed!

First off, I’d like to say the staff really makes the visit that much better. I’ve only been here once so far but I can honestly say they had their act together. I love the concept of all you can eat sushi. The boats add to the atmosphere by making it more interactive with your date, chef, whoever really! The sushi wasn’t what I’d expect from Gingerootz or DongPo’s but it’s very edible. The crab ragoons are very reasonably priced and tasty. I’m glad I live close by!
Special on Tuesday is buy 2 sushi get 1 free. I believe it was Tuesday. All you can eat is around $ 18 – 20 if I recall.

Ok sushi. Not bad. If it’s ur first time n the waiter is not around then ur stuck standing there like a fool. The floor is sticky. And their boats look like it haven’t been wash. Little things matter but it’s just my 2¢

I’ve never had sushi this fresh ever. I am a Chicago native and for the price, you will not find a better deal or experience in the Fox Valley area. Don’t pass this gem up! BEST CRAB RANGOONS I’ve ever had. No lie.

The sushi was amazing. The staff was so very friendly. I am very picky when it comes to sushi and they didn’t mind making me rolls that I wanted. Also the cost is very reasonable. Overall I really loved the food and the experience. The only thing I didn’t like is that their spicy tuna is minced (as are most places), but other than that it was phenomenal!!!

If you’re looking for great tasting sushi with a variety of delicious, mouth watering food item in a buffet setting, then move along. This is not the place for you.
Sure, having the sushi on a boat going around a long table is a novel idea but it’s just that. Thinly sliced raw tuna on a rolled up rice roll (with TOO much vinegar) was the most common roll floating past me. There’s simply no variety and the excessive amount of vinegar overpowers any flavor it may have.
I’ve never been to a buffet and leave early and hungry. I know that if it was the old owner of what it used to be called, Jet Sushi, he’d be ashamed of what it turned out to be. If you’re looking for sushi buffet, try Fuji on Northland Ave or the new Great Buffet by Toys R Us. It’s not worth $ 15 per person. Use that money on better sushi at woodmans or festivals, yup it’s that bad.

The Sushi itself is always great. Jet or Island Sushi it doesn’t matter. The staff is friendly and the kitschy boats are so unique and a fun way to pick your plates. The AYCE lunch buffet is a great deal and it usually isn’t too long of a wait for specialty rolls so that is a bonus.
They could use their time better though…
Instead of focusing on getting drink refills (which I am happy to do myself) or getting deserts from the back which mostly seem to float around a few laps, they should focus on keeping the boats full of Sushi and making the specialty rolls faster when there is more than just a few people waiting to eat.

Just got back from Jet Sushi or Island sushi, new ownership again.
Total bill was $ 41, both water.
It was not a pleasant experience, I had 8 small plates of bad sushi, comes to about 2 small rolls.
The wait was extremely long we sat for about 2 hours, they couldn’t keep up with the people eating, but they kept putting sushi in the middle isles so only those people ate.
What sushi we did eat was bad, some pieces had strange sour tastes to them and others just didn’t taste right. The rice was prepared incorrectly, it was too hot, temp wise, for sushi. The fish was too warm as well, probably because of the rice. Did not taste fresh at all even though they had just made them. All frozen old ingredients.
After about two hours we had enough and left. There were other guests who arrived before us still eating.
Last time we go, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
